वानर बंधुओं की कथा

हिमवन में कभी दो वानर बंधु रहते थे। बड़े का नाम नंदक और छोटे का नाम चूल्लनंदक था। वह दोनों वहां रहने वाले 80000 वानरों के मुखिया थे।

एक बार वे दोनों वानर बंधु अपने साथियों के साथ कूदते फांदते किसी दूरस्थ वन में चले गए और अपने साथियों के साथ में नए प्रकार के फलों का आनंद लेते रहे। उनकी बूढ़ी मां भी थी, जो वृद्धावस्था में कूद फांद नहीं कर सकती थी इसलिए वह हिमवल में ही रहा करती थी। दोनों ही वानर बंधु अपनी माता का भरपूर ध्यान भी रखते थे अतः वह नए वन से भी अपने अनुचरों के हाथों अपनी माता के लिए फल आदि भिजवाते रहे।

कुछ दिनों के बाद जब दोनों वानर बंधु हिमवन स्थित अपने घर वापस पहुंचे तो उन्होंने अपनी माता को कंकाल रूप में पाया। वह अति दुर्बल हो गई थी। बिल्कुल हड्डी की गठरी बन चुकी थी। उसने कई दिनों से कुछ भी नहीं खाया था। वानर बंधुओं द्वारा भेजे गए फल भी उस बूढ़ी और रुग्ण माता तक नहीं पहुंचे थे क्योंकि साथी बंदरों ने वह फल रास्ते में ही खत्म कर दिए थे।

अपनी माता की दयनीय दशा को देखकर उन दोनों बंदरों ने शेष बंदरों से दूर रहना उचित समझा और अपनी माता के साथ एक नए स्थान पर डेरा डाला

एक दिन उस वन में एक शिकारी आया उसे देखते ही दोनों वानर पेड़ के घने पत्तों में छुप गए किंतु उनकी वृद्ध माता जिसे आंखों से भी कम दिखता था उस व्याध को नहीं देख सकी।

व्याध एक ब्राह्मण था, जो कभी तक्षशिला के विश्वविख्यात गुरु पराशरीय का छात्र रह चुका था, किंतु अपने अवगुणों के कारण वहां से निकाला जा चुका था। जैसे ही उसकी दृष्टि बूढी बंदरिया पर पड़ी, उसने उसको तीर से मारना चाहा। अपनी माता के प्राण की रक्षा हेतु नंदक कूदता हुआ व्याध के सामने आ खड़ा हुआ और कहा - "हे व्याध! तुम मेरे प्राण ले लो, मगर मेरी माता का संहार ना करो।" व्याध ने नंदक की बात मान ली और तीर से उसे मार डाला। दुष्ट व्याध नंदक को दिए गए वचन का उल्लंघन करते हुए फिर से बूढी मर्कटी पर तीर का निशाना लगाया। इस बार छोटा भाई चुल्लनंदक कूदता हुआ उसके सामने आ खड़ा हुआ। उसने भी अपनी भाई की तरह व्याध से कहा-"हे व्याध! तू मेरे प्राण ले ले मगर मेरी माता को ना मार।" व्याध ने कहा - "ठीक है ऐसा ही करूंगा" और देखते ही देखते उसने उस तीर से चुल्लनंदक को मार दिया। अपने वचन का पालन न करते हुए उसने अपने तरकश से एक तीर निकाला और बूढ़ी मर्कटी को भी भेद डाला।

तीन बंदरों का शिकार कर वह व्याध बहुत प्रसन्न था क्योंकि उसने एक ही दिन में उनका शिकार किया था। यथाशीघ्र वह अपने घर पहुंच कर अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों को अपना पराक्रम दिखाना चाहता था। जैसे ही वह अपने घर के करीब पहुंचा, उसे सूचना मिली कि एक वज्रपात से उसका घर ध्वस्त हो चुका था और उसके परिवार वाले भी मारे जा चुके थे। अपने परिजनों के वियोग को उसके मन में नहीं स्वीकारा और वह विस्मय और उन्माद में दौड़ता हुआ अपने तीर, शिकार व अपने कपड़ों तक छोड़, जैसे ही अपने जले हुए घर में प्रवेश किया एक जली हुई बौंस भरभरा कर गिर पड़ी और उसके साथ उसके घर के छत का बड़ा भाग ठीक उसके सिर पर गिरा और तत्काल उसकी मृत्यु हो गई।

बाद में कुछ लोगों ने उपर्युक्त घटनाचक्र का आंखों देखा वृत्तांत सुनाया। उनका कहना था कि ज्यूँ ही व्याध ने अपने घर में प्रवेश किया धरती फट गई और उसमें से आग की भयंकर लपटें उठी, जिसमें वह स्वाहा हो गया। हां, मरते वक्त उसने तक्षशिला के गुरु की यह बात अवश्य दोहराई थी :-

" अब याद आती है मुझे गुरुदेव की वह शिक्षा, श्रम्रादी बनो और कभी ऐसा काम मत करो जिससे पश्चाताप की अग्नि में जलना पड़े। "

Legend of apes

There were once two monkey brothers in Himavan. The elder's name was Nandaka and the younger's name was Chullanandaka. Both of them were the heads of 80000 apes living there.

Once both the monkey brothers jumped in a remote forest with their companions jumping and enjoying new kinds of fruits with their companions.

She also had an old mother, who could not jump in old age, so she used to live in the snow. Both the monkey brothers used to take full care of their mother, so they kept sending fruits etc. for their mother from the new forest to their servants.

A few days later, when the monkey brothers returned to their home in Himavan, they found their mother in skeletal form. She was very weak. Bone of the bone had been formed. He had not eaten anything for several days. The fruits sent by the monkeys did not reach that old and sick mother as the fellow monkeys had finished the fruits on the way.

Seeing the miserable condition of his mother, the two monkeys thought it appropriate to stay away from the remaining monkeys and camped with their mother in a new place.

One day a hunter came to that forest. On seeing it, the two monkeys hid in the thick leaves of the tree, but their old mother, who looked less than the eyes, could not see the hunter.

Vyadha was a Brahmin, who had once been a student of Parashriya, the world-famous guru of Taxila, but was removed from his place of virtue. As soon as his eyesight fell on the old monkey, he tried to hit him with an arrow. To protect his mother's life, Nandak jumped and stood in front of the hunter and said - "Hey hunter! You take my life, but do not kill my mother." The hunter obeyed Nandak and killed him with an arrow. Violation of the promise given to the evil hunter Nandak again shot an arrow at the old Mercati. This time the younger brother Chullanandak jumped in front of him. Like his brother, he also said to the hunter - "Hey hunter! Take my life but do not kill my mother." The hunter said - "Okay I will do that" and on seeing this, he killed Chullanandaka with that arrow. Not obeying his word, he took out an arrow from his quiver and also pierced the old Mercati.

The hunter was very happy hunting three monkeys as he hunted them in a single day. He wanted to reach his home as soon as possible and show his might to his wife and children. As he approached his home, he received information that his house had been destroyed by a thunderclap and that his family had also been killed. He did not accept the disconnection of his family and he ran in amazement and frenzy, leaving his arrows, hunting and his clothes, as soon as he entered his burnt house, a burnt dwarf collapsed and accompanied him to his house. The large part of the roof fell right on his head and he died instantly.

Some people later narrated the eye-witness account of the above mentioned cycle. He said that as soon as the hunter entered his house, the earth burst and fierce flames arose from him, in which he died. Yes, while dying, he must have reiterated this point of the mentor of Taxila: -

"Now I miss you, be that education of Gurudev, be a Shramadi and never do such a thing that will burn you in the fire of repentance."
