वैज्ञानिक नाम: Calendula Officinalis
बिहार, ऐसा माना जाता है कि इस क्षेत्र में बौद्ध मठों (विहारों) की अधिकता के कारण, इस क्षेत्र का नाम बिहार पड़ा। उल्लेखनीय है कि यह क्षेत्र प्राचीन समय में बौद्ध धर्म का प्रमुख केंद्र रहा है। इंडियन बोर्ड फॉर वाइल्ड लाइफ ने 1985 में सभी राज्यों और केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों को सलाह दी कि वे अपने-अपने राजकीय पशु, पक्षी, बृक्ष और पुष्प चिन्हित करें। ताकि देश के हर क्षेत्र के लोग अपने वन्य प्राणियों और वनस्पति जगत के संरक्षण की भावना से अभिप्रेरित हो सकें। तब कचनार को बिहार का राजकीय फूल घोषित किया गया था।

पर अब बिहार का राजकीय फूल गेंदा है। बिहार सरकार ने साल 2013 में गेंदा को राजकीय फूल घोषित किया। विभाजन के बाद राज्य के वर्तमान भौगोलिक परिवेश, वनस्पति प्रजातियों तथा प्राणियों की उपलब्धता एवं उनके संरक्षण की जरूरत महसूस की गयी। गेंदे के फूल की लोकप्रियता ने इसे राजकीय फूल का दर्जा दिलाया है। गेंदा एक लोकप्रिय फूल है और बिहार के ज़्यादातर घरों में यह पाया जाता है। गेंदे के फूल की बहुत सी प्रजातियाँ होती हैं। यह एक सजावटी फूल है और इसका माला भी बनता है।
गेंदा एक बारहमासी फूलों वाली फसल है। इसके पौधे अपने नारंगी और पीले फूलों के लिए लोकप्रिय हैं, जो बगीचों और परिदृश्यों की सुंदरता को बढ़ाते हैं। भारत में गेंदा की खेती मुख्य रूप से तमिलनाडु, कर्नाटक, आंध्र प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश और महाराष्ट्र आदि राज्यों में की जाती है। भारत में मुख्य रूप से अफ्रीकन गेंदा और फ्रेंच गेंदा की खेती की जाती है। यह एक सजावटी फूल है, इसलिए इसकी खेती मुख्य रूप से इसके रंग बिरंगे फूलों के लिए की जाती है। इसके फूलों का उपयोग शादी – विवाह, मदिरों एवं कई प्रकार के समरोह में किया जाता है। सजावटी उपयोग के आलावा गेंदा के अपने कई औषधीय महत्व भी होते हैं। भारत में कई किसानों के लिए गेंदा की खेती आय का एक महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत है। भारत में मुख्य रूप से अफ्रीकन गेंदा और फ्रेंच गेंदा की खेती की जाती है।
