यह एक छोटे आकार का धारीदार बाज़ होता है, इसका आकार केवल 45 से 60 सेंटीमीटर के बीच होता है। मादा राजबाज़ का आकार 55 से 70 सेंटीमीटर के बीच होता है। वजन में यह 550 ग्राम से लेकर 1400 ग्राम तक का होता है। मादा का वजन नर से अधिक होता है। नर बाज़ के पंखों का फैलाव 85 से 105 सेंटीमीटर तक हो सकता है, जबकि मादा के पंखों का फैलाव 100 सेंटीमीटर से लेकर 125 सेंटीमीटर तक होता है। इनकी पूंछ की लंबाई 18 से 28 सेंटीमीटर के बीच होती है।

इस बाज़ के पंख छोटे और मजबूत होते हैं, जिससे कि इन्हें तुरंत तेज गति मिल जाती है, इनकी एक लंबी पूछ होती है जो कि इन्हें कलाबाजियां करने में और शिकार करते समय तुरंत मुड़ने में सहायता प्रदान करती है, जिससे कि ये जंगलों में वृक्षों के बीच आसानी से तेज गति से उड़ सकते हैं।

राजबाज़ को पहचानने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका इस के पूरे शरीर पर पाए जाने वाले भूरे रंग की धारियां है जो कि इसके सफेद पेट पर बनी होती हैं और दूर से ही नजर आती हैं। यह घने जंगलों में काफी तेज गति से उड़ सकता है तथा शिकार कर सकता है। अक्सर शिकार खोजने के लिए यह जंगलों के ऊपर उड़ता रहता है शिकार दिख जाने पर यह अचानक से गोता लगा देता है तथा झाड़ियों में आकर गिर जाता है। इसकी गति 50 से 60 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा तक हो सकती है।

यह अपना घोंसला तिनकों और पत्तियों से बनाता है, यह एक बार में दो से चार अंडे देता है। इसके अंडों का रंग नीलापण लिए हुए सफेद होता है। अंडे सेने का कार्य ज्यादातर मादा ही करती है। कभी-कभी जब मादा शिकार पर जाती है तब नर भी अंडे सेने का काम करता है। इन अंडों से 30 से 38 दिन में बच्चे निकल आते हैं। जब यह बच्चे 36 से 42 दिन के हो जाते हैं, तो यह उड़ना प्रारंभ करते हैं। तीन से चार महीने का होने पर यह बच्चे पूरी तरह स्वतंत्र हो जाते हैं तथा शिकार करना सीख जाते हैं। इन पक्षियों का जीवन काल 10 से 12 वर्ष का होता है।

It builds its nest from straws and leaves, it lays two to four eggs at a time. The color of its eggs is white with a bluish tint. Most of the work of hatching eggs is done by the female. Sometimes the male also incubates the eggs while the female goes hunting. Kids come out of these eggs in 30 to 38 days. When these children are 36 to 42 days old, they start flying. At the age of three to four months, these children become completely independent and learn to hunt. The life span of these birds is 10 to 12 years.
