एक समय की बात है। राजा कृष्णदेव राय विजयनगर में दरबार लगाकर बैठे थे। उसी समय दरबार में एक सुंदर महिला एक बक्सा लेकर आई। उस बक्से में एक मखमली साड़ी थी, जिसे निकालकर वह दरबार में राजा और सभी दरबारियों को दिखाने लगी। साड़ी इतनी सुंदर थी कि जो भी उसे देखता वह हैरान रह जाता।

महिला ने राजा से कहा - "वह ऐसी ही सुंदर साड़ी बनाती है। उसके पास कुछ कारीगर हैं, जो अपनी गुप्त कलाओं से इस साड़ी की बुनाई करते हैं। उसने राजा से निवेदन किया कि अगर राजा उसे कुछ धन दें, तो वह उनके लिए भी ऐसी ही साड़ी बना देगी।" राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने महिला की बात मान ली और उसे धन दे दिया। महिला ने साड़ी तैयार करने के लिए 1 साल का समय मांगा। इसके बाद वह महिला साड़ी बुनने वाले अपने कारीगरों के साथ राजा के महल में रहने लगी और साड़ी की बुनाई करने लगी।

इस दौरान उस महिला व कारीगरों के खाने-पीने से लेकर तमाम खर्चे राजमहल ही उठाता था। इसी तरह 1 साल का समय निकल गया। फिर राजा ने अपने मंत्रियों को उस साड़ी को देखने के लिए उस महिला के पास भेजा। जब मंत्री कारीगर के पास गए, तो वह देखकर हैरान रह गए। वहां दो कारीगर बिना किसी धागे या कपड़े के कुछ बुन रहे थे। महिला ने बताया कि उसके कारीगर राजा के लिए साड़ी बुन रहे हैं, लेकिन मंत्रियों ने बताया कि उन्हें कोई साड़ी दिखाई नहीं दे रही है। इस पर उस महिला ने कहा कि यह साड़ी सिर्फ वही लोग देख सकते हैं, जिनका मन साफ हो और जीवन में उन्होंने कोई पाप न किया हो।

महिला की यह बात सुनकर राजा के मंत्री परेशान हो गए। उन्होंने बहाना बनाते हुए उस महिला से कहा कि उन्होंने वह साड़ी देख ली है और वो वहां से चले गए। राजा के पास वापस आकर उन्होंने कहा कि वह साड़ी बहुत ही सुंदर है।राजा इस बात से काफी खुश हुए। अगले दिन उन्होंने उस महिला को वह साड़ी लेकर दरबार में हाजिर होने का आदेश दिया। वह महिला एक बक्सा लिए हुए अपने कारीगरों के साथ अगले दिन दरबार में आ गई। उसने दरबार में बक्सा खोला और सबको साड़ी दिखाने लगी।

दरबार में बैठे सभी लोग बहुत हैरान थे, क्योंकि राजा समेत किसी भी दरबारी को कोई साड़ी नहीं दिखाई दे रही थी। यह देखकर तेनालीराम ने राजा के कान में कहा कि उस महिला ने झूठ बोला है। वह सभी को बेवकूफ बना रही है।इसके बाद तेनालीराम ने उस महिला से कहा कि उन्हें या दरबार में बैठे किसी भी दरबारी को यह साड़ी दिखाई नहीं दे रही है।

तेनाली राम की यह बात सुनकर महिला ने कहा - "यह साड़ी सिर्फ उसी को दिखाई देगी जिसका मन साफ होगा और उसने कोई पाप न किया हो।"

महिला की इस बात को सुनकर तेनालीराम के मन में एक योजना आई। उन्होंने उस महिला से कहा - "राजा चाहते हैं कि तुम खुद उस साड़ी को पहनकर दरबार में आओ और सभी को वह साड़ी दिखाओ।" तेनाली राम की यह बात सुनकर वह महिला राजा के सामने मांफी मांगने लगी। उसने राजा को सब सच-सच बता दिया कि उसने कोई साड़ी नहीं बनाई है। वह सबको मूर्ख बना रही थी।

महिला की बात सुनकर राजा को बहुत गुस्सा आया। उन्होंने उसे जेल में डालने की सजा सुना दी। लेकिन जब उस महिला ने बहुत विनती की, तो उन्होंने उसे छोड़ दिया और माफ करके उसे जाने दिया। साथ ही राजा ने तेनालीराम की चतुराई की तारीफ भी की।

कहानी से सीख – अधिक दिनों तक झूठ या धोखा छिपाया नहीं जा सकता है। एक न एक दिन सच्चाई सबसे सामने आ ही जाती है।

Then the king sent his ministers to see that sari to the woman. When the minister went to the artisan, he was surprised to see. There two artisans were weaving something without any thread or cloth. The woman told that her craftsmen were weaving saris for the king, but the ministers told that they could not see any saree. On this the woman said that only those people can see this saree, whose mind is clean and they have not committed any sin in life.

Hearing this from the woman, the ministers of the king got upset. Making an excuse, he told the woman that he had seen that sari and he left from there. Coming back to the king, he said that the sari was very beautiful. The king was very happy with this. The next day he ordered the woman to attend the court with the sari. The woman came to the court the next day with her craftsmen carrying a box. She opened the box in the court and started showing the saree to everyone.

All the people sitting in the court were very surprised, because no sari could be seen by any courtier including the king. Seeing this, Tenaliram said in the ear of the king that the woman had lied. She is fooling everyone. After this Tenaliram told the woman that he or any courtier sitting in the court could not see this sari.

Hearing this talk of Tenali Rama, the woman said - "This sari will be visible only to the one whose mind is clean and he has not committed any sin."

Hearing this from the woman, a plan came to Tenaliram's mind. He said to the woman - "The king wants you to come to the court wearing that sari yourself and show that sari to everyone." Hearing this from Tenali Rama, the woman started apologizing in front of the king. He told the king all the truth that he had not made any sari. She was fooling everyone.

The king got very angry after listening to the woman. They sentenced him to be put in jail. But when the woman begged a lot, he left her and forgave her and let her go. At the same time, the king praised Tenaliram's cleverness.
