महाराजा अकबर के दरबार में चापलूसों की कमी नहीं थी और उनका एकमात्र उद्देश्य अकबर की चापलूसी कर तरक्की हासिल करना था। परंतु बीरबल उनकी राह का सबसे बड़ा अर्चन थे। जिसके सामने उनकी दाल नहीं गलती थी। इसीलिए वह सदा बीरबल को नीचा दिखाने की जुगत में लगे रहते थे। 

एक दिन दरबार लगा हुआ था। बीरबल सहित सभी दरबारी दरबार में उपस्थित थे। तभी अकबर ने दरबारियों के सामने एक प्रस्ताव रखा कि, "हम यह सोच रहे हैं कि महीना 30 दिन की जगह 60 दिन का कर दिया जाए। आप लोगों का इस बारे में क्या ख्याल है।"

यह सुनने की देरी थी कि चापलूस दरबारियों ने हामी भरनी शुरू कर दी। सभी हां में हां मिलाने लगे। यह उनके लिए चापलूसी का बेहतर और श्रद्धा कुछ दरबारियों ने कहा, "जहांपनाह! आपका विचार अति उत्तम है। 30 दिन का महीना बहुत छोटा होता है, जिसमें कामकाज पूरे नहीं हो पाते इसलिए महीना 60 दिन का होना चाहिए।"

बीरबल अब तक चुपचाप बैठे सारी बातें सुन रहे थे। उन्होंने इस बारे में कोई भी राय व्यक्त करने में कोई उत्सुकता नहीं दिखाई। बीरबल को खामोश देखकर अकबर ने पूछा, "बीरबल! तुम इस बारे में क्या कहते हो। क्या तुम्हारी राय भी इन सभी दरबारियों की तरह ही है की महीना 30 की बजाय बढ़ाकर 60 दिन का होना चाहिए?"

 बीरबल ने जवाब दिया- "हुजूर 30 दिन से 60 दिन का महीना कर देने का विचार उत्तम है, किंतु इसके लिए एक काम करना होगा।" बीरबल व अकबर कुछ कहते उसके पहले ही दरबारी एक स्वर में कहने लगे, "हम बादशाह सलामत के सभी आदेशों का पालन करने के लिए कोई भी काम करने को तैयार हैं।"

 बीरबल बोले, "अच्छी बात है। आप लोग तो जानते ही होंगे कि पृथ्वी पर 15 दिन चांदनी रातें और 15 दिन अंधेरी रातें चंद्रमा के कारण होती हैं। प्रकृति के इस नियम के कारण पृथ्वी पर 30 दिन का महीना होता है। अब जब आप लोग 60 दिन का महीना करने के लिए कुछ भी करने को तैयार हैं, तो ऐसा कीजिए कि चंद्रमा को जाकर 30 दिन चांदनी रातें और 30 दिन अंधेरी रातें करवा दीजिए।"

 यह सुनते ही सभी चापलूस दरबारी अगल-बगल एक दूसरे को झांकने लगे। बीरबल अकबर से बोले, "जहांपनाह देखिए सारे कर्मठ दरबारियों को सांप सूंघ गया। अब ऐसे में क्या किया जाए।" 

अकबर ने दरबारियों की परीक्षा लेने के लिए यह प्रस्ताव सामने रखा था। दरबारियों की चापलूसी देख वे नाराज हो गए और उन्हें बोले, "चापलूसी कर बीरबल की बराबरी करने चले हो। जानते नहीं कि बीरबल की बराबरी के लिए अकल चाहिए चापलूसी का गुण नहीं।"

 There was no shortage of sycophants in the court of Maharaja Akbar and his only aim was to achieve progress by flattering Akbar.  But Birbal was the biggest challenge in his path. That is why they always kept trying to degrade Birbal.
 One day in the court, all the courtiers including Birbal were present. Then Akbar made a proposal in front of the courts that, "We are thinking that the month should be changed to 60 days instead of 30 days. What do you guys think about this?"

 There was a delay in hearing that sycophantic courtiers started agreeing.  Everyone started shouting yes.  It was better and flattering of flattery for them. Some courtiers said, "Jahanpanah! Your idea is very good. The 30-day month is very short, in which the work cannot be completed, so the month should be 60 days."

 Birbal was sitting silently listening till now.  He showed no eagerness to express any opinion about this.  Seeing Birbal kept silent, Akbar asked, "Birbal! What do you say about this. Is your opinion like all these courtiers that the month should be increased to 60 days instead of 30?"

  Birbal replied - "The idea of ​​doing 30 days to 60 days is a good idea, but one thing has to be done for it." Even before Birbal and Akbar would say something, the courtiers started saying in a single voice, "We are ready to do any thing to obey all the orders of King Salamat."

Birbal said, "Good thing. You must have known that 15 days of moonlight nights on the earth and 15 days of dark nights are caused by the moon. Due to this law of nature, there is a 30-day month on earth. Now when you  People are willing to do anything to do a 60-day month, so do that, go to the moon and make it 30 days of moonlight nights and 30 days of dark nights. "

  On hearing this, all the cunning courtiers started to look at each other side by side.  Birbal said to Akbar, "See where the snake sniffed all the working courtiers. Now what to do in such a situation." Akbar had proposed this proposal to test the courtiers. Seeing the flattery of the court, he got angry and said to them, "By flattering, you can not match Birbal. Not knowing that to be equal to Birbal, wisdom is important, not a virtue of flattery."
