छद्दन्त हाथी की कहानी

भारत में प्राचीन काल से ही कहानियां सुनाने का चलन रहा है। हिंदी साहित्य कहानियों से समृद्ध है। पर मोबाइल, कंप्यूटर के इस समय में ये चलन छूटता जा रहा। तो इस परम्परा को छूटने न दीजिये। यहां प्रेरणादायक कहानियों को पढ़कर घर में सुनाइए। 

         जातक कथाओं को आगे बढ़ाते हुए आज एक नई कहानी की चर्चा करते हैं, जिसका शीर्षक है छद्दन्त हाथी।

 हिमालय के घने वनों में सफेद हाथियों की दो विशिष्ट प्रजातियां हुआ करती थीं- छद्दन्त और उपोसथ। छद्दन्त हाथियों का रंग सफेद होता था और उनके छ: दांत हुआ करते थे।(ऐसा पाली साहित्य में उल्लिखित है)। छद्दन्त हाथियों का राजा एक कंचन गुफा में निवास करता था। उसके मस्तक और पैर माणिक के समान लाल और चमकीले थे। उसकी दो रानियां थी - महासुभद्दा और चुल्लसुभद्दा।

 एक दिन हाथियों का राजा और उसकी रानियां अपने दास दासियों के साथ एक सरोवर में जल क्रीड़ा कर रहे थे। सरोवर के तट पर फूलों से लगा एक साल वृक्ष भी था। गजराज ने खेल खेल में ही साल वृक्ष की एक शाखा को अपनी सूंड से हिला डाला। संजोग बस वृक्ष के फूल और पराग महासुभद्दा को आच्छादित कर गए। किंतु वृक्ष की सूखी टहनियां और फूल चुल्लसुभद्दा के ऊपर गिरे। चुल्लसुभद्दा ने इस घटना को संयोग ना मानकर, स्वयं को अपमानित माना। नाराज चुल्लसुभद्दा ने उसी समय अपने पति और उनके निवास स्थान का त्याग कर कहीं चली गई। तत्पश्चात छद्दन्तराज के अथक प्रयास के बावजूद भी वह कहीं ढूंढे ना मिली।

 कालांतर में चुल्लसुभद्दा मर कर मद्य राज्य की राजकुमारी बनी और विवाह उपरांत वाराणसी की पटरानी। किंतु छद्दन्तराज के प्रति उसका विषाद और रोष इतना प्रबल था कि पुनर्जन्म के बाद भी वह प्रतिशोध की आग में जलती रही। अनुकूल अवसर मिलने पर उसने राजा के छद्दन्त के दंत प्राप्त करने को उकसाया। फलत: राजा ने उक्त उद्देश्य से कुशल निषादों की एक टोली बनाई। जिसका नेता सोनुत्तर को बनाया और उन्हें छद्दन्त के दांतो को प्राप्त करने के लिए टोली के साथ भेज दिया।

7 वर्ष, 7 महीने और 7 दिनों के पश्चात सोनुत्तर छद्दन्तराज के निवास स्थान पर पहुंचा। वहां पहुंचकर वह चुपचाप पेड़ों के झुरमुट में छिप गया। छद्दन्तराज जब वहां आया तो सोनुत्तर ने उस पर विष- बुझा बाण चलाया। बाण से घायल छद्दन्तराज ने जब झुरमुट में छिपे सोनुत्तर को हाथ में धनुष लिए देखा, तो वह उसे मारने के लिए दौड़ा। किंतु सोनुत्तर ने संन्यासियों का गेरुआ वस्त्र पहन रखा था, जिसके कारण गजराज ने निषाद को जीवनदान दे दिया। अपने प्राणों की भीख पाकर सोनुत्तर का हृदय परिवर्तन हुआ। भाव विह्वल सोनुत्तर ने छद्दन्तराज को सारी बात बताई कि क्यों वह उसके दांतो को प्राप्त करने के उद्देश्य से वहां आया था।

 चूंकि छद्दन्तराज के मजबूत दांत सोनुत्तर नहीं काट सकता था इसलिए छद्दन्त मृत्यु पूर्व स्वयं ही अपनी सूंड से अपने दांत काट कर सोनुत्तर को दे दिए।

 वाराणसी लौटकर सोनुत्तर ने जब छद्दन्त के दांत रानी को दिखलाएं और वहां घटित सारी बातें रानी को कह सुनाई तो रानी छद्दन्त की मृत्यु के आघात को संभाल ना सकी और तत्काल मर गई।

Moral/ शिक्षा  : बदले की आग सिर्फ नुकसान ही पहुँचाती है। अतः क्षमाशील बनें।

 The Jatakas carry forward the stories and discuss a new story, titled Chaddhant Elephant. There were two distinct species of white elephants in the dense forests of the Himalayas - Chadant and Uposath. The elephant elephants were white in color and had six teeth (this is mentioned in Pali literature). The king of the elusive elephants resided in a Kanchan cave. His forehead and feet were red and shiny like rubies. She had two queens - Mahasubhadda and Chullasubhadda.

 One day the king of elephants and his queens along with their slave maids were playing water in a lake. There was also a year tree planted with flowers on the banks of the lake. Gajraj shook a branch of the Sal tree with his trunk while playing sports. Sanjog just covered the flowers of the tree and the pollen Mahasubhadda. But the dry twigs and flowers of the tree fell on the chullasubhadda. Chullasubhadda considered the incident to be a humiliation, not a coincidence. Angry Chullasubhadda left her husband and her place of residence at the same time and went somewhere. After that, despite the untiring efforts of Chaddantraj, she could not be found anywhere.

 Later, Chullasubhadda died and became the princess of the Madya kingdom and after marriage Varanasi's queen. But her sadness and anger towards Chaddantraj was so strong that even after rebirth she kept burning in the fire of vengeance. On getting a favorable opportunity, he encouraged the king to get the dental teeth. As a result, the king formed a team of skilled Nishad for the purpose. Whose leader made Sonusad and sent him with the team to get the teeth of Chaddant.

After 7 years, 7 months and 7 days, Sonush reached the residence of Chaddantraj. On reaching there, he hid quietly in the clump of trees. When Chaddantraj came there, Sonusad fired a poison-fired arrow at him. When Chadantraj, who was wounded by the arrow, saw Sonushud hidden in the clump with a bow in his hand, he ran to kill him. But Sonusad was wearing ocher robes of ascetics, due to which Gajraj gave life to Nishad. Sonshud changed his heart after begging for his life. The emotionless son-in-law told Chaddantraj why he had come there for the purpose of getting his teeth.

 Since the strong teeth of Chaddantraj could not bite Sonusv, so before he died, Chadantraj himself cut his teeth with his trunk and gave it to Sonudev.

 On returning to Varanasi, when Sonush showed the teeth of Chaddant to the queen and narrated all the things that happened to the queen, the queen could not handle the trauma of Chaddant's death and died instantly.

 The fire of revenge only hurts. So be forgiving.
