एक दिन महाराज कृष्णदेवराय और तेनालीराम दोनों राजदरबार में बैठे थे। महाराज तेनालीरमन से टेढ़े - मेढ़े प्रश्न पूछ रहे थे। उस प्रश्नों के उत्तर तेनालीराम बहुत ही चतुराई से दे कर महाराज को स्तब्ध कर देते थे। वह दिन इस तरह बड़े आराम से बिता। कुछ दिन बीतने के बाद फिर से महराज ने तेनालीराम को बुलाया और प्रश्न पूछते हुए कहा - तेनाली! हमारे विजयगर में सभी मिलाकर कितने कौवे होंगे? क्या तुम इसका उत्तर दे सकते हो?

तेनलीरामकृष्णा ने बड़े ही सरल अंदाज से कहा - जी हुज़ूर! जरूर बता सकता हुँ। महाराज ने कठोर भाव से कहा - मुझे सही गिनती चाहिए। तेनालीराम बोले - महराज एक दम सही गिनती ही बताऊंगा। राजा कृष्णदेव ने दो दिन की महोलत दी। तीसरे दिन तेनालीराम को राजा के द्वारा पूछे हुए प्रश्न का जवाब देना था। वहीं फैसले के दिन सभी नगरवासी को अंदाजा था की तेनालीराम इस उत्तर का जवाब न दे पाएंगे। भला परिंदो की गिनती कैसे संभव हैं?

नक्की की हुई तारीख को दरबार फिर से जमा हुआ। सभी मंत्री, महामंत्री, नगरवासी उपस्थित थे। सभी की नज़र तेनालीराम की ओर थी। सभी को उत्तर जानने की बेताबी थी। तेनालीराम ने उतर देते हुए कहा - महाराज! हमारी पूरी राजधानी विजयनगर में एक लाख पचास हजार नौ सौ निन्यानबे कौवे हैं। महाराज मेरे जवाब पर कोई संदेह हो तो आप किसी के जरिए गिनवा सकते हैं। महराज ने कहा - अगर गिनती में भूल हुई तो? तेनालीराम ने कहा - मेरी गिनती में भूल हो ऐसा कुछ हो नहीं सकता। अगर गलती से भी गिनती में कुछ भूल हुई तो उसके पीछे भी कुछ कारण होगा।

तेनालीरमन ने फिर विस्तार से कहा कि अगर राजधानी में मेरी गिनती के मुताबित कौवे न हुए, उससे ज्यादा हुए तो यह हो सकता है कि कौवे के कोई रिश्तेदार दूसरे राज्य से आये होंगे या तो फिर कौवे के मित्र। अगर कौवों की संख्या कम हुई तो हमारे राज्य के कौवे अपने रिस्तेदारों से मिलने के लिए गए होंगे। वरना कौवों की संख्या एक लाख पचास हजार नौ सौ निन्यानबे ही हैं। सभी नगरवासी और उपस्तित मंत्री सतब्ध रह गए। तेनालीराम हर बार की तरह इस बार भी अपनी बुद्धिमत्ता से बच निकले।

Tenli Ramakrishna said in a very simple way - Oh dear! I can definitely tell. Maharaj said sternly - I want the correct count. Tenaliram said - Sir, I will tell the exact count only. King Krishnadev granted two days' grace. On the third day, Tenaliram had to answer the question asked by the king. At the same time, on the day of judgment, all the townspeople had an idea that Tenaliram would not be able to answer this answer. How is it possible to count birds?

The court was again assembled on the specified date. All ministers, general ministers, townspeople were present. All eyes were on Tenaliram. Everyone was eager to know the answer. Tenaliram got down and said - Maharaj! There are one lakh fifty thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine crows in our entire capital, Vijayanagara. Sir, if there is any doubt on my answer, you can get it counted through someone. The Maharaj said - What if there is a mistake in counting? Tenaliram said - If there is a mistake in my counting, nothing like this can happen. If there is some mistake in counting even by mistake, then there will be some reason behind it too.

Tenaliraman then elaborated that if the number of crows in the capital did not exceed them, then it may be possible that some relatives of the crows must have come from other states or friends of the crows. If the number of crows decreased, then the crows of our state would have gone to meet their relatives. Otherwise the number of crows is one lakh fifty thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. All the townspeople and the ministers present were stunned. Like every time, Tenaliram escaped with his intelligence this time too.
