एक बार की बात है विजयनगर में वसंत ऋतु का समय था। चारों तरफ अच्छे अच्छे फूल खिले थे। हर तरफ हरियाली थी। पक्षी चहचहा रहे थे। राजा कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार में एक मंत्री ने राजा को सुझाव देते हुए कहा - "महाराज! इतना अच्छा मौसम है, हम सभी को बाहर कहीं घुड़सवारी के लिए जाना चाहिए।"

राजा ने भी इस पर सहमति जताई। इसके अगले दिन राजा अपने कुछ मंत्रियों और तेनालीराम के साथ घोड़े पर सवार होकर दूर निकल गए। राजा एक जगह पहुंचे जहाँ पर बहुत सारे फूल थे। वहाँ पर गुलाब के फूल भी थे। राजा गुलाब की सुंदरता को देख कर अपने घोड़े से नीचे उतर गए। वह अपने मंत्रियो से बोले कितने अच्छे गुलाब के फूल है? यह क्या कहना चाहते है? 

एक मंत्री बोला -  महाराज! ये यह कह रहे है कि जिस तरह इन फूलों की ख़ुश्बू पुरे जंगल में फैली है। उसी तरह आपकी कीर्ति भी पुरे संसार में फैले। इसके बाद दूसरे मंत्री ने भी राजा की प्रशंसा में बात रखी। इसके बाद सभी मंत्री राजा की प्रशंसा में कुछ कुछ बोले।तेनालीरमन चुपचाप यह सब सुन रहे थे। 

इस पर राजा ने तेनालीरमन को कहा - तेनालीरामा! तुम भी कुछ बोलो कि यह गुलाब क्या कह रहे है? एक मंत्री ने कहा कि महाराज! हम आपकी प्रशंसा कर रहे हैं। इससे तेनालीराम को जलन हो रही है। इसलिए वह कुछ नहीं बोल रहे। तेनालीरामा ने कहा - महाराज! ऐसा कुछ नहीं है। मैं इसलिए चुप हूँ, क्योंकि गुलाब के फूल में कांटे भी होते हैं।

राजा ने पूछा - तेनालीरमन! तुम कहना क्या चाहते हो? तेनालीरमन ने एक मंत्री के जेब से एक सन्देश निकाला और राजा को दिखाया, जिसमें पड़ोस के राजा ने एक मंत्री को लिखा था - "यदि वह उस दिन राजा को किसी तरह गुलाब के बाग़ में लाए। राजा को गुलाब बहुत पसंद है, जिस वजह से राजा यहां ज्यादा समय व्यतीत करेंगे और इस समय में हम राज्य में लूट कर सकेंगे। लूट का कुछ हिस्सा तुम्हे भी दिया जाएगा।"

इतना सुनने की देरी थी, मंत्री राजा के सामने गिड़गिड़ाने लगा कि उसको माफ़ कर दे। 

राजा ने सैनिकों को आदेश दिया कि उस मंत्री को तुरंत बंदी बना ले। राजा ने तेनालीरमन की होशियारी की तारीफ की और कहा कि हमें फूलों की सुंदरता से पहले राज्य की सुरक्षा पर ध्यान देना चाहिए। 

English Translate 

Rose

 Once upon a time it was the time of spring in Vijayanagara. Good flowers were blooming all around. There was greenery everywhere. The birds were chirping. A minister in the court of King Krishnadeva Raya suggested to the king - "Your Majesty! The weather is so good, we all should go for horse riding somewhere outside."

 The king also agreed to this. The next day the king, accompanied by some of his ministers and Tenaliram, left on horseback. The king reached a place where there were many flowers. There were also roses there. Seeing the beauty of the rose, the king got down from his horse. He told his ministers how many beautiful roses are there? What do you want to say?

 A minister said - 'Maharaj! They are saying that the way the fragrance of these flowers spreads in the whole forest. In the same way, your fame also spread in the whole world. After this another minister also spoke in praise of the king. After this all the ministers said something in praise of the king. Tenaliraman was listening to all this silently.

 On this the king said to Tenaliraman - Tenalirama! You also say something that what is this rose saying? A minister said, "Maharaj! We are praising you. This makes Tenaliram jealous. That's why he's not saying anything. Tenalirama said - Maharaj! There is nothing like that. I am silent because even a rose has thorns.

 The king asked - Tenaliraman! What do you want to say? Tenaliraman took out a message from a minister's pocket and showed it to the king, in which the neighboring king had written to a minister - "If he somehow brings the king to the rose garden that day. The king loves roses, that's why Since then the king will spend more time here and in this time we will be able to loot the kingdom. Some part of the loot will be given to you also."

 There was such a delay in hearing, the minister started pleading in front of the king to forgive him.

 The king ordered the soldiers to immediately take the minister captive. The king praised Tenaliraman's intelligence and said that we should focus on the security of the state before the beauty of the flowers.
