लालची व्यापारी । जातक कथा 

एक बार बोधिसत्व का जन्म वाराणसी में एक बनिए के घर में हुआ। लक्षण देखकर विद्वानों ने उसका नाम पंडित रखा। बड़े होने पर उन्होंने एक-दूसरे बनिए को अपना साझीदार बनाकर वाणिज्य प्रारंभ किया। इस दूसरे बनिए का नाम था अतिपंडित। वाणिज्य में खूब लाभ होने पर धन के बंटवारे का प्रश्न उपस्थित हुआ। 

पंडित ने कहा जो कुछ भी है, उसे दो बराबर भागों में बांट देते हैं क्योंकि हम दोनों का मूलधन समान है और हमने काम समान रूप से किया है। परंतु अतिपंडित इस तर्क को स्वीकार नहीं कर रहा था। वह कह रहा था, "यदि दोनों को बराबर बराबर मिला, तो पंडित और अति पंडित में भेद ही क्या रह जाएगा। मैं अतिपंडित हूं, इसलिए मुझे पंडित से दूना धन मिलना चाहिए।" 

यह विवाद चलता रहा और कोई निर्णय ना हो सका। अतिपंडित ने घर आकर अपने वृद्ध पिता को सलाह दी।  देखिए, पिता जी मैं आपको एक वृक्ष के खोखले में बिठा दूंगा। जब मैं उस पंडित को लेकर वृक्ष के नीचे आकर पुकारूं, "हे वृक्ष देव! पंडित और अतिपंडित में धन का बंटवारा किस प्रकार होना उचित है? तब आप स्वर बदलकर कहना कि अतिपंडित को पंडित से दूना मिलना उचित है।"

पिता भी लोभी था। पुत्र के प्रस्ताव को उसने स्वीकार कर लिया और वृक्ष के खोखले में छिप कर बैठ गया। इधर अतिपंडित ने जाकर पंडित से कहा, "भाई! देखो इस गांव के बाहर एक वृक्ष देवता हैं, जो सदा उचित ही निर्णय लेते हैं और उचित बात बताते हैं। क्यों ना हम अपने झगड़े का निर्णय उन्हीं से करा लें।"

पंडित को वृक्ष देवता की बात पर विश्वास ना था, परंतु इस विषय में उसे कौतूहल अवश्य थी। इससे उसने इस प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया। नगर में समाचार फैल गया। वृक्ष देवता का चमत्कार देखने को बहुत से लोग एकत्र हो गए। वृक्ष के नीचे खड़े होकर अतिपंडित ने कहा है, "वृक्ष देव! मेरा नाम अतिपंडित है। मैं वाणिज्य करता हूं, जिसमें पंडित नाम का व्यक्ति मेरा एक साझीदार है। कृपा कर यह निर्णय कर दीजिए कि हम दोनों में धन का बंटवारा किस प्रकार हो?" 

थोड़ी देर सन्नाटा रहा। उसके पश्चात वृक्ष में से मनुष्य का सा शब्द फूट पड़ा। हे नगरवासियों! तुम्हें आपस में लड़ना नहीं चाहिए और जिसका भी जो भाग हो उसे देने में हिचकिचाहट नहीं होनी चाहिए। मैं निर्णय देता हूं कि पंडित को एक भाग तथा अतिपंडित को दो भाग मिलना चाहिए। वृक्ष को मनुष्य के जैसे बोलते देख बहुत से लोगों को आश्चर्य हुआ। 

पंडित ने कहा यदि यह देवता का निर्णय है, तो मुझे स्वीकार करने में कोई आपत्ति नहीं होगी, परंतु बोलने वाला देवता है या मनुष्य इसका निर्णय वृक्ष में आग लगाकर करवा लूंगा। देखते-देखते वृक्ष के खोखले में घास फूस भर कर आग लगा दी गई। बिचारा बूढ़ा एकदम घबराकर उस खोखले का घास फूस हटाकर अधजले हाथ पांव से पेड़ के खोखले से बाहर आ गिरा और सच सबके सामने आ गया। इस प्रकार पंडित द्वारा अपने साथी को ठगने का प्रयास विफल हुआ।

English Translate 

Greedy Merchant - Jataka Katha

Once a Bodhisattva was born in the house of a Bania in Varanasi. Seeing the symptoms, scholars named him Pandit. When they grew up, they started commerce by making each other Bania their partner. The name of this second Bania was Atipandit. The question of distribution of wealth arose when there was a lot of profit in commerce.

The pundit said that whatever is there, we divide it into two equal parts because we both have the same principal and we have done the work equally. But Atipandit was not accepting this argument. He was saying, "If both are given equally, then what will be the difference between a pandit and an ati pundit. I am atipandit, so I should get double the money from the pundit."

The dispute went on and no decision could be taken. Atipandit came home and advised his aged father. Look, Father, I will make you sit in the hollow of a tree. When I take that pundit under the tree and call, "O tree god! How is it proper to divide the wealth between the pandit and the atipandit? Then you change your voice and say that it is appropriate for the atipandit to get double the pandit."

The father was also greedy. He accepted the son's proposal and hid in the hollow of the tree and sat down. Here Atipandit went and said to the pundit, "Brother! Look, there is a tree god outside this village, who always takes the right decision and tells the right thing. Why don't we get our disputes decided by him."

The pundit did not believe in the words of the deity of the tree, but he was certainly curious about this matter. So he accepted the offer. News spread in the city. Many people gathered to see the miracle of the tree god. Standing under the tree, Atipandit said, "Tree Dev! My name is Atipandit. I do commerce, in which a person named Pandit is my partner. Please decide how the money should be divided between us." ?"

There was silence for a while. After that the word of a man erupted from the tree. O townspeople! You should not fight amongst yourself and should not hesitate to give whatever part you have. I give the verdict that Pandit should get one part and Atipandit should get two parts. Many people were surprised to see the tree speaking like a human.

The pundit said that if it is the decision of the deity, then I will have no objection in accepting it, but whether the speaker is a deity or a man, I will get it decided by setting fire to the tree. Suddenly, the hollow of the tree was filled with grass and set on fire. The poor old man got frightened and removed the grass from that hollow and came out of the hollow of the tree with half burnt hands and feet and the truth came out in front of everyone. Thus the Pandit's attempt to cheat his companion failed.
