Bhootnath Temple Group - Architecture

 The Bhootnath group of temples consists of two major temples, one on the east and the other on the northeast side of the Agastya Tirtha or Agastya Lake. The Bhootnath temple is located on the eastern side of the Agastya Tirtha. It is one of the earliest examples of structural temples in South India. . This temple was built during the reign of Chalukyas of Vatapi as it was then known as Badami. A later addition was built by the Kalyani Chalukyas of the west. The temple seems to have been built in two phases. The inner halls and temples represent the style of the eastern Badami Chalukyas, while the outer halls represent the style of the Kalyani Chalukyas of the west. The huge pillars in the inner hall and the space between the pillars are decorated with lotus designs. On one side of the temple gate stands the goddess Ganga riding Makara, while on the other side stands the river Yamuna who is depicted as riding a tortoise.

The group of Bhootnath temples came under the influence of Jains for some time. Later, it was taken over by the Lingayats, who installed a Shivling in the temple and a Nandi in front. The temple situated on the northeast side of the lake is the Mallikarjuna temple. It dates back to the later period and was built during the reign of the Western Chalukyas.

The Mallikarjuna temple which is situated to the north east of the lake definitely dates back to the later Chalukyas, the Chalukyas of Kalyani. It has a pyramidal structure characteristic of Western Chalukya architecture.
