दैत्य का संदूक

हिमालय की तराई में एक समय एक बौद्ध साधु रहते थे। उनके उपदेश सुनने एक दबंग दुष्ट (दैत्य) भी आता था। किंतु दबंग दुष्ट अपनी दानवी (दमन करने की प्रवृत्ति) के कारण राहगीरों को लूटता था और उन्हें मारता था। एक बार उसने काशी के एक धनी सेठ की पुत्री और उसके अनुचरों की सवारी पर आक्रमण कर दिया। दैत्य को देखते ही उस कन्या के सारे अनुचर अपने अस्त्र-शस्त्र छोड़कर भाग खड़े हुए। सेठ की कन्या को देखकर दैत्य उसपर मुग्ध हो गया और उसने उसकी हत्या ना कर उसके साथ ब्याह रचाया। इस डर से कि वह सुंदर कन्या कहीं भाग ना जाए, वह उसे एक संदूक में बंद कर देता था। एक दिन वह दैत्य साधु से मिलने जा रहा था, तभी उसकी नजर एक सुंदर झील पर पड़ी। गर्मी बहुत थी, इसलिए वह झील के पास आया और उसने अपने साथ लिया हुआ संदूक बाहर निकाला। फिर संदूक को खोलकर कन्या को बाहर निकाला और उसे जलाशय में अपने हाथों से स्नान कराया। उसके बाद वह स्वयं जलाशय में स्नान करने लगा।

मुक्त हो कन्या जलाशय के किनारे विचरण करने लगी। तभी कन्या की नजर एक नवयुवक पर पड़ी जो एक जादूगर भी था। अत्यंत सुंदर युवक को देखकर कन्या ने उसे इशारे से अपने पास बुलाया। फिर उसे उस संदूक में बैठने को कहा। युवक जब वहां बैठ गया तब वह उसे अपने लिबास से ढक कर स्वयं उसके ऊपर जा बैठी।

नहा कर दैत्य जब लौटा तो उसने संदूक को बंद कर दिया। जब दैत्य साधु के आश्रम में पहुंचा तो, साधु ने उसका स्वागत करते हुए कहा आप तीनों का स्वागत है। दैत्य साधु की बात सुन चौक गया, क्योंकि वह नहीं जानता था कि कन्या और उसके अतिरिक्त भी वहां कोई तीसरा उसके साथ था।

साधु की बात सुनते ही उसने संदूक को बाहर निकाला। जैसे ही दत्त ने संदूक को खोला, युवक ने उसपर प्रहार करना चाहा। पर वह अपनी तलवार म्यान से पूरी तरह खींच नहीं पाया था। अगर कुछ क्षणों का विलंब हुआ होता तो वह निश्चित रूप से दैत्य का पेट फाड़ देता। फिर दैत्य को देख युवक भाग खड़ा हुआ।

साधु के वचन एवं ज्ञान को सुनने के कारण दैत्य की जान बच गई थी। इसलिए उसने साधु का धन्यवाद किया। साधु ने तब उसे शीलवान बनने की शिक्षा दी और उस कन्या को भी मुक्त करने का परामर्श दिया। उस दिन के बाद से दैत्य शीलव्रती बन गया और उसने कन्या को भी मुक्त कर दिया।

Monster Box

A Buddhist monk once lived in the foothills of the Himalayas. A domineering rogue (demon) also used to listen to his sermons. But the domineering rogue looted and killed passers-by due to his demonic (tendency to oppress). Once he attacked the ride of the daughter of a wealthy Seth of Kashi and his servants. On seeing the monster, all the followers of that girl left their weapons and ran away. Upon seeing Seth's daughter, the monster was enchanted by him and he did not kill her and married her. Fearing that the beautiful girl might run away, he locked her in a box. One day he was going to meet the demon monk, when he saw his eyes on a beautiful lake. The heat was too much, so he came to the lake and took out the chest he had taken with him. Then, opening the chest, took out the girl and bathed her in the reservoir with her hands. After that he himself took a bath in the reservoir.

Freed, the girl started wandering on the banks of the reservoir. Then the girl's eye was on a young man who was also a magician. Seeing the very handsome young man, the girl beckoned him to her. Then he was asked to sit in the box. When the young man sat there, she covered it with her dress and sat on it herself.

When the monster returned after taking a bath, he closed the box. When the monster reached the monk's ashram, the monk welcomed him and said that all three of you are welcome. The monster listened to the monk, because he did not know that there was a third with him, besides the girl and him.

As soon as he heard the monk, he took out the box. As soon as Dutt opened the box, the young man tried to attack him. But he could not pull his sword completely out of the sheath. If there had been a delay of a few moments, he would have surely torn the stomach of the monster. Then the young man ran away looking at the monster.

The monster's life was saved due to hearing the words and knowledge of the monk. So he thanked the monk. The monk then taught her to become Sheelwan and advised to free the girl as well. From that day onwards, the monster became piety and she also freed the girl.
