पैरों के निशान पढ़ने वाला

किसी वन में एक यक्षिणी रहती थी। उसके पास कुछ शरारत तरकीब थी, जो उस वन की परिधि तक ही सीमित थी। वह उस वन से गुजरने वाले राहगीरों को लूटती और उन्हें नुकसान पहुंचाती रहती थी। 

एक दिन उस वन में एक खूबसूरत नौजवान घूम रहा था। शरारती यक्षिणी ने उसे भी पकड़ लिया। मगर वह उसको अपना शिकार बनाने के बजाय उससे शादी रचा ली। वह उसे जंजीरों से बांध कर रखती थी ताकि वह कहीं भाग ना जाए। कुछ दिनों के बाद यक्षिणी ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया। जब वह पुत्र कुछ बड़ा हुआ, तो उसने उसे पैरों के निशान पढने की विद्या सिखाई। वे निशान 12 वर्षों तक पढ़े जा सकते थे।

बालक कुछ और बड़ा हुआ। उसने अपने पिता को माता की कैद में देखा। वह एक दिन माता की अनुपस्थिति में अपने पिता को मुक्त करा उस जंगल के बाहर भगा ले गया। चूंकि यक्षिणी की शक्ति वन के अंदर ही थी, बाहर नगण्य हो जाती थी। अतः वह उन्हें फिर कभी पकड़ नहीं पाई।

पिता और पुत्र ने वाराणसी में शरण ली। एक दिन वाराणसी के सरकारी खजाने में चोरी हुई। राजा ने तब यह घोषणा करवाई कि जो कोई भी जनता की संपत्ति को ढूंढने में सहायता करेगा, उसे यथोचित पारितोषिक दिया जाएगा। 

यक्षिणी पुत्र तब तत्काल ही चोरों के पद चिन्हों को पढ़ता हुआ राजा और जनता को उस स्थान पर ले गया, जहां खजाना छुपाया गया था। विस्मित हो सभी में बालक की बहुत प्रशंसा की।

राजा ने तब बालक से चोरों का नाम पूछा। बालक ने कहा कि चोरों का नाम बताना उचित नहीं होगा। किंतु जब राजा ने हट किया, तो उसने चोरों का नाम बता दिया। चोर और कोई नहीं बल्कि राजा और उनके पुरोहित थे। लोगों को तब राजा और पुरोहित पर बहुत गुस्सा आया और उन्होंने उन दोनों को पीट पीट कर मार डाला और उस बालक को अपना नया राजा बना दिया।

There used to be a Yakshini in a forest. He had some mischief tricks, which were confined to the periphery of that forest. She used to loot and harm passers-by passing through that forest.

One day a beautiful young man was roaming in that forest. The mischievous Yakshini also caught him. But instead of making her his victim, she got married to him. She kept him tied with chains so that she would not run away. A few days later Yakshini gave birth to a son. When that son grew up, he taught him the practice of reading footprints. Those marks could be read for 12 years.

The boy grew up some more. He saw his father in mother's confinement. He freed his father one day in the absence of mother and drove him out of that forest. Since the power of the Yaksini was inside the forest, it became insignificant outside. So she could never catch them again.

Father and son took refuge in Varanasi. One day a theft took place in the government treasury of Varanasi. The king then announced that whoever would help in finding the property of the public would be given proper reward.

The Yakshini son then immediately read the footprints of the thieves and took the king and the public to the place where the treasure was hidden. Be amazed everyone praised the child very much.

The king then asked the child the name of the thieves. The child said that it would not be appropriate to name the thieves. But when the king withdrew, he revealed the name of the thieves. The thieves were none other than the king and his priests. The people then got very angry at the king and the priest, and they beat them both to death and made that child their new king.
