सहिष्णुता का व्रत

ठंड के दिनों में कुण्डक कुमार नाम का एक साधु हिमालय से उत्तर की ओर वाराणसी पहुंचा। वहां उसका एक बचपन का दोस्त था, जो उस राज्य का सेनापति था। उसने सन्यासी को राज्य उद्यान में स्वच्छंद भ्रमण करने की अनुमति दी।

एक दिन कुण्डक कुमार उद्यान में बैठा ध्यान कर रहा था कि तभी वाराणसी का एक दुराचारी राजा अपनी प्रेमिकाओं के साथ वहां प्रविष्ट हुआ। वहां वह उन सुंदरियों के साथ आमोद- प्रमोद करते हुए सो गया। राजा को सोता हुआ देख सुंदरियां उसको वहीं छोड़ बाग में भ्रमण करनेे लगी। तभी उनकी दृष्टि कुण्डक कुमार पर पड़ी, जो साधना में लीन था। सुंदरियों ने उसका ध्यान आकृष्ट कर उसे उपदेश सुनाने को कहा। कुण्डक कुमार ने तब उन्हें सहिष्णुता की महत्ता पर उपदेश देना प्रारंभ किया।

थोड़ी देर बाद जब राजा की नींद खुली और उसने अपनी सुंदरियों को अपने पास नहीं पाया, तो वह उन्हें ढूंढता हुआ कुण्डक कुमार के पास जा पहुंचा। एक सन्यासी द्वारा उसकी सुंदरियों का आकृष्ट हो जाना उसके लिए असह्य था। अतः क्रोध से उसने सन्यासी से पूछा कि वह उन सुंदरियों को कौन सा सबक सिखा रहा था।

सन्यासी ने तब उसे भी सहिष्णुता के महत्व की बात बताई, जिसके परिपालन का स्वयं उसने व्रत ले रखा था। यह सुन राजा ने उसे कोड़ों से पिटवाया। जब वह लहूलुहान हो गया, तो राजा ने फिर पूछा कि उसके व्रत का क्या हुआ? खून से लथपथ सन्यासी को कोई क्रोध नहीं आया और वह सहिष्णुता के व्रत का ही गुणगान करता रहा। क्रोध में राजा ने तब उसके हाथ और तत्पश्चात पैर आदि कटवा कर वही प्रश्न बार-बार पूछता रहा, किंतु सन्यासी हर बार शांत भाव से सहिष्णुता के व्रत की ही गाथा गाता रहा।

अंत में उस सन्यासी की सहिष्णुता से अत्यधिक क्रुद्ध हो राजा ने उसकी छाती पर लात मारा और वापस लौट गया। कहा जाता है कि राजा जब वापस लौट रहा था, तभी धरती फट गई और उसके अंदर से उठती आग की लपटों ने राजा को निगल लिया। सन्यासी के घाव भी तभी स्वयमेव क्षण मात्र में भर गए और वह पुनः हिमालय पर वापस चला गया।

Tolerance

During the winter, a monk named Kundak Kumar reached Varanasi from the Himalayas towards the north. He had a childhood friend there, who was the general of that state. He allowed the monk to take a free trip to the state park.

One day Kundak Kumar was sitting in the garden meditating that then a vicious king of Varanasi entered there with his girlfriends. There he fell asleep with those beauties. Seeing the king sleeping, the beauties left him there and started traveling in the garden. Then he had his eyes on Kundak Kumar, who was engaged in spiritual practice. The beauties caught her attention and asked her to teach the sermon. Kundak Kumar then started teaching him on the importance of tolerance.

After a while, when the king woke up and could not find his beauties near him, he went to Kundak Kumar, looking for them. It was unbearable for a sannyasi to get her beauties captivated. So in anger, he asked the monk what lesson he was teaching to those beauties.

The monk then also told him about the importance of tolerance, for which he himself had taken a vow to observe it. Hearing this, the king beat him with whips. When he was bled, the king again asked what happened to his fast? The blood-soaked Sannyasi did not get any anger and he continued to sing the fast of tolerance. In anger, the king then asked the same question again and again by cutting his hands and feet, but every time the monk kept singing the saga of tolerance fast in a calm manner.

At last the king became extremely angry with the tolerance of the monk, kicked his chest and returned. It is said that when the king was returning, the earth exploded and the flames rising from inside swallowed the king. Sanyasi's wounds also healed itself in a moment and he went back to the Himalayas.
