मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर ~ Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple

दक्षिण भारत में कैलाश के नाम से मशहूर आंध्र प्रदेश का मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर भारत के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग कृष्णा नदी के तट पर श्रीशैलम नामक पर्वत पर स्थित है। श्रीशैलम पर्वत करनूर जिले के नल्ला - मल्ला नाम के घने जंगलों के बीच है। नल्ला - मल्ला का अर्थ है सुंदर और ऊंचा। इस पर्वत की ऊंची चोटी पर भगवान शिव मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में विराजमान हैं। 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग को दूसरा ज्योतिर्लिंग माना जाता है। मल्लिका मां पार्वती को और अर्जुन भगवान शिव को कहा गया है। मान्यताओं के अनुसार यहां आने वाले हर भक्त की सभी सात्विक मनोकामनाएं पूरी होती हैं। महाभारत के अनुसार श्रीशैलम पर्वत पर भगवान शिव की पूजा करने से अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है।

एक बार शिव पार्वती के पुत्र स्वामी कार्तिकेय और गणेश दोनों भाई विवाह के लिए आपस में झगड़ा करने लगे। कार्तिकेय का कहना था कि वह बड़े हैं इसलिए उनका विवाह पहले होना चाहिए, किंतु श्री गणेश अपना विवाह पहले करना चाहते थे। इस ़बात पर फैसला देने के लिए दोनों अपने माता-पिता मां पार्वती और शिव जी के पास पहुंचे। तब मां पार्वती और शिव जी बोले कि तुम दोनों में से जो पहले यहां पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करके आ जाएगा उसी का विवाह सर्वप्रथम होगा।

शर्त सुनते ही कार्तिकेय जी पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करने दौड़ पड़े। इधर स्थूलकाय श्री गणेश जी और उनका वाहन भी चूहा, भला इतनी शीघ्रता से वे परिक्रमा कैसे कर सकते थे। गणेश जी के सामने भारी समस्या उपस्थित थी। गणेश जी शरीर से जरूर स्थूल है किंतु वे बुद्धि के सागर हैं। उन्होंने कुछ सोच विचार किया और माता पार्वती और पिता देवाधिदेव महेश्वर से एक स्थान पर बैठने का निवेदन किया। उन दोनों के आसन पर बैठ जाने के बाद श्री गणेश ने उनकी सात परिक्रमा की और पूजन अर्चन किया-

पित्रोश्च पूजनं कृत्वा प्रकान्तिं च करोति य: तस्य  वै पृथिवीजन्यं फलं भवति निश्चितम्।।

     इस प्रकार श्री गणेश माता पिता की परिक्रमा करके पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा से प्राप्त होने वाले फल के अधिकारी बन गए। उनकी चतुर बुद्धि को देखकर शिवजी और पार्वती जी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उनका विवाह करा दिया। जिस समय स्वामी कार्तिकेय संपूर्ण पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा कर वापस आए उस समय तक श्री गणेश जी का विवाह विश्वरूप प्रजापति की पुत्रियों सिद्धि और बुद्धि के साथ हो चुका था। इतना ही नहीं श्री गणेश जी को 'सिद्धि' नामक पत्नी से 'क्षेम' तथा 'बुद्धि' नामक पत्नी से 'लाभ', ये दो पुत्र रत्न भी मिल गए थे।

भ्रमणशील और जगत् का कल्याण करने वाले देवर्षि नारद ने स्वामी कार्तिकेय से यह सारा वृत्तांत कह सुनाया। इस प्रकरण से नाराज कार्तिकेय ने शिष्टाचार का पालन करते हुए अपने माता पिता के चरण छूए और वहां से चल दिए।

माता-पिता से अलग होकर स्वामी कार्तिकेय क्रौंच पर्वत पर रहने लगे। शिव और पार्वती ने अपने पुत्र को समझा-बुझाकर वापस बुलाने के लिए महर्षि श्री नारद जी को क्रौंच पर्वत पर भेजा। देवर्षि नारद जी ने अनेक प्रकार से स्वामी कार्तिकेय को मनाना चाहा, पर वे नहीं मानें। फिर, पुत्र मोह में माता पार्वती भी उनके पास उन्हें लेने गईं, यह जानकर कार्तिकेय वहां से पलायन कर गए। इस बात से हताश माता पार्वती वहीं बैठ गईं। वहीं, भगवान शिव भी ज्योतिर्लिंग में यहां प्रकट हुए। इसके बाद से ही इस जगह को मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग के नाम से जाना जाने लगा,क्योंकि माता पार्वती को मल्लिका और भगवान शिव को अर्जुन के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

   एक अन्य कथानक के अनुसार, क्रौंच पर्वत के समीप में ही चंद्रगुप्त नामक राजा की राजधानी थी। उनकी राज कन्या किसी संकट में उलझ गईं थीं। इस विपत्ति से बचने के लिए वह अपने पिता के राजमहल से भागकर पर्वतराज की शरण में पहुंच गई। वह कन्या ग्वालों के साथ कंदमूल खाती और दूध पीती थी। इस प्रकार उसका जीवन निर्वाह उस पर्वत पर होने लगा। उस कन्या के पास एक श्यामा (काली) गौ थी, जिसकी सेवा वह खुद करती थी। उस गौ के साथ एक विचित्र घटना घटने लगी। कोई व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन छिपकर उस श्यामा का दूध निकाल लेता था। एक दिन उस कन्या ने उस चोर को दूध दूहते हुए देख लिया तब वह क्रोध से आगबबूला होकर उसे मारने के लिए दौड़ी। जब वह गौ के समीप पहुंची तो उसके आश्चर्य का ठिकाना ना रहा, क्योंकि उसे वहां शिवलिंग के अतिरिक्त और कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दिया। आगे चलकर उस राजकुमारी ने उस शिवलिंग के ऊपर एक सुंदर सा मंदिर बनवा दिया। वही प्राचीन शिवलिंग आज मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

  इस मंदिर का भली-भांति सर्वेक्षण करने के बाद पुरातत्ववेत्ताओं ने अनुमान लगाया है कि इसका निर्माण कार्य लगभग 2000 वर्ष प्राचीन है। इस ऐतिहासिक मंदिर के दर्शनार्थ बड़े-बड़े राजा और महाराजा समय-समय पर आते रहे हैैं।

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple

 Mallikarjuna temple in Andhra Pradesh, popularly known as Kailash in South India, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is situated on a mountain called Srisailam on the banks of Krishna River. Srisailam mountain is in the middle of dense forests named Nalla-Malla in Karanur district. Nalla - Malla means beautiful and elevated. On the high peak of this mountain, Lord Shiva sits as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. Among the 12 Jyotirlingas, Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is considered the second Jyotirlinga. Mallika Maa Parvati and Arjuna are said to be Lord Shiva. According to beliefs, all the Satvik wishes of every devotee who come here are fulfilled. According to Mahabharata, worshiping Lord Shiva on Mount Srisailam gives the fruits of performing Ashwamedha Yagya.

 Once Shiva Parvati's son Swami Karthikeya and Ganesh brothers started quarreling with each other for marriage. Karthikeya said that he is older so he should get married first, but Shri Ganesh wanted to get married first. Both reached out to their parents Maa Parvati and Shiva ji to give their verdict on this matter. Then Maa Parvati and Shiva Ji said that the first of the two of you who will come here revolving around the earth will be married first.

 On hearing the condition, Karthikeya ji ran to revolve around the earth. Here, the giant Shri Ganesh ji and his vehicle were also a mouse, how could they do the circumambulation so quickly. A huge problem was present in front of Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is definitely physical but he is the ocean of wisdom. He pondered a bit and requested Mother Parvati and Father Devadhidev Maheshwar to sit in one place. After sitting on the posture of both of them, Shri Ganesh did seven circumambulation and worshiped him.

 Pitroscha Poojanam Kritva Prakananti K Karoti ya: Tasya va Prithivijjaniam phal bhavati definitam.

 In this way, Shri Ganesh revolved around the parents and became the officer of the fruits of the earth. Seeing his clever intellect, Shivji and Parvati ji were very happy and got them married. By the time Swami Karthikeya came back revolving around the entire earth, by that time Shri Ganesh ji was married to Vishwaroop Prajapati's daughters Siddhi and Wisdom. Not only this, Shri Ganesh ji got 'Kshem' from his wife named 'Siddhi' and 'Benefit' from his wife named 'Wisdom', these two sons also got Ratna.

 Devarshi Narada, who is a wanderer and welfare of the world, narrated this account to Swami Kartikeya. Angered by this episode, Karthikeya followed his courtesy and touched the feet of his parents and left.

 After separating from parents, Swami Karthikeya started living on Crouch mountain. Shiva and Parvati understood their son and sent Maharishi Shri Narada to Mount Crancha to call back. Devarshi Narada wanted to persuade Swami Karthikeya in many ways, but he did not agree. Then, Mother Parvati also went to pick him up in son Moh, knowing that Karthikeya fled from there. Desperate from this, Mother Parvati sat there. At the same time, Lord Shiva also appeared here in Jyotirlinga. Since then, this place came to be known as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, because Mata Parvati is also known as Mallika and Lord Shiva as Arjuna.

 According to another story, near the mount Crounch was the capital of a king named Chandragupta. His royal daughter was entangled in some crisis. To escape from this calamity, she ran away from her father's palace and reached the shelter of Parvatraj. She used to eat and drink milk with Kandals of Gwalas. Thus his life began to subsist on that mountain. The girl had a Shyama (Kali) cow, whom she herself served. A bizarre incident happened with that cow. Someone used to hide the milk of that shyma everyday. One day the girl saw the thief milking her, then she was enraged and ran to kill him. When she reached near Gau, her surprise did not remain, as she did not see anything other than Shivling there. Later, the princess built a beautiful temple on top of that Shivalinga. The same ancient Shivling is famous today as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga.

 After a thorough survey of this temple, archaeologists have estimated that its construction work is about 2000 years old. Great kings and emperors have been coming from time to time to visit this historic temple.
