दुष्ट सपेरा और बंदर की कथा 

बहुत वर्षों पहले वाराणसी में एक सपेरा रहता था। उसके पास एक सांप और एक बंदर था। सपेरा लोगों के सामने बंदर और सांप का करतब दिखाता था और उससे जो पैसा पाता था, उससे ही अपना गुजर-बसर करता था। उन्हीं दिनों वाराणसी में सात दिवसीय एक त्यौहार का आयोजन था, जिससे सारे नगर में धूम मची हुई थी। सपेरा भी उस उत्सव में सम्मिलित होना चाहता था। अतः उत्सव में सम्मिलित होने के लिए उसने अपने बंदर को अपने एक मित्र के पास छोड़ दिया। उसके मित्र के पास एक विशाल मक्के का खेत था। उसका मित्र बंदर की अच्छी तरह देखभाल करता और समय पर यथा योग्य भोजन भी कराता रहता था।

7 दिनों के पश्चात वह सपेरा वापस लौटा। उत्सव का मद और मदिरा का उन्माद उस पर अब भी छाया हुआ था। वह अपने खेतिहर मित्र से जब अपने बंदर को वापस लेकर अपने घर लौट रहा था, तो अकारण ही उस बंदर को एक मोटे बांस की खपची से तीन बार मारा जैसे कि वह एक ढोल हो। घर पहुंच कर उसने बंदर को अपने घर के पास के एक पेड़ से बांध दिया और मदिरा और नींद के उन्माद में पास पड़ी खाट पर ही बेसुध सो गया। 

पेड़ से बंधे बंदर का बंधन ढीला था। थोड़े ही प्रयत्न से उसने स्वयं को रस्सी से मुक्त कर लिया और पास के पेड़ पर जा बैठा। 

प्रातः काल जब सपेरे की नींद टूटी और वह बंदर को मुक्त पाया, तो पास बुलाने के उद्देश्य से उसने उसे पुचकारते हुए कहा, "आ जाओ अच्छे बंदर आजा, मेरा बंदर महान आ जा!!" बंदर ने तब उसके प्रत्युत्तर में कहा - "ओ सपेरे! व्यर्थ है तुम्हारा यह गुणगान, क्योंकि बंदर होते नहीं महान!!" फिर वह बंदर तत्काल ही वहां से उछलता कूदता कहीं दूर निकल गया और सपेरा हाथ मलता ही रह गया।

The Story of a Snake Charmer and Monkey

 Many years ago a charmer lived in Varanasi.  He had a snake and a monkey.  The snake charmer used to show the tricks of monkeys and snakes in front of people and used to live with the money he got from him.  In those days, a seven-day festival was organized in Varanasi, which caused a lot of buzz in the entire city.  Sapera also wanted to participate in that festival.  So he left his monkey to one of his friends to join the celebration.  His friend owned a huge corn field.  His friend used to take good care of the monkey and also provide suitable food on time.

 He returned to the snake charmer after 7 days.  The festive item and the frenzy of the liquor still dominated him.  When he was returning home from his agricultural friend with his monkey back, he hit the monkey three times unintentionally as if it were a drum.  On reaching home, he tied the monkey to a tree near his house and slept soundly on the cot lying nearby in a frenzy of sleep and sleep.

 The monkey tied to the tree was loose.  With little effort, he freed himself from the rope and sat on a nearby tree.

 In the morning, when the snake was asleep and he found the monkey free, he called out to him for the purpose of calling, "Come, good monkey come, my great monkey come !!"  The monkey then said in response to him - "O snake! This praise of yours is meaningless, because monkeys are not great !!"  Then the monkey immediately jumped from there and jumped out somewhere and the snake hand kept on rubbing.
