 आज हम एक ऐसे मंदिर की चर्चा करेंगे, जिसका क्षेत्रफल सुनकर ही आश्चर्य की सीमा नहीं रहेगी। जी हां, आज हम एक विशाल और अद्भुत मंदिर के बारे में चर्चा करते हैं, जिसका नाम है श्री रंगनाथ स्वामी मंदिर। यह मंदिर 6,31,000 वर्ग मीटर (156 एकड़) मैं बना है, जिसकी परिधि 4 किलोमीटर (10710 फीट) है। श्रीरंगम सबसे बड़ा क्रियाशील मंदिर होने का दावा करता है, क्योंकि "अंगकोर वट" दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा लेकिन गैर क्रियाशील हिंदू मंदिर है। 

श्री रंगनाथ स्वमी मंदिर, दक्षिण भारत के तमिलनाडु राज्य में स्थापित है। यह मंदिर तिरुचिरापल्ली शहर के श्रीरंगम नामक द्वीप पर बना हुआ है, जिसे 'भूलोक वैकुंठ' का जाता है। यह मंदिर श्री रंगनाथस्वामी को समर्पित है, जिन्हें भगवान विष्णु का ही अवतार माना जाता है। यह मंदिर द्रविड़ शैली में बना हुआ है, जिसमें संतों द्वारा कई महिमाओं का वर्णन किया गया है, जो दिव्य प्रबंध को उजागर करते हैं।

इस मंदिर का परिसर 7 संकेंद्रित अनुभागों और 21 गोपुरम से बना है मंदिर के गोपुरम को 'राजगोपुरम' कहा जाता है और यह 236 फीट (72 मीटर) है, जो एशिया में सबसे लंबा है। इसके बारे में एक मिथक है कि गोपुरम के ऊपर से श्रीलंका के तट को देखा जा सकता है। 

पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार वैदिक काल में गोदावरी नदी के तट पर गौतम ऋषि का आश्रम था। उस समय अन्य क्षेत्रों में जल की कमी थी तथा जल की तलाश में कुछ ऋषि गौतम ऋषि के आश्रम पहुंचे। अपने यथाशक्ति अनुसार गौतम ऋषि ने उनका आदर सत्कार किया और उन्हें भोजन कराया। परंतु ऋषि यों को उनसे ईर्ष्या होने लगी। उर्वरक भूमि की लालच में ऋषियों ने मिलकर छल द्वारा गौतम ऋषि पर गौ हत्या का आरोप लगा दिया तथा उनकी संपूर्ण भूमि हथिया ली। इसके बाद गौतम ऋषि ने जाकर श्री रंगनाथस्वामी की आराधना की और उनकी सेवा की। गौतम ऋषि के सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर श्री रंगनाथ ने उन्हें दर्शन दिया और पूरा क्षेत्र उनके नाम कर दिया। गौतम ऋषि के आग्रह पर स्वयं ब्रह्मा जी ने विश्व के सबसे बड़े इस भव्य मंदिर का निर्माण किया था। भगवान श्री राम के वनवास काल में इस मंदिर में देवताओं की भगवान राम के द्वारा पूजा की गई थी और रावण पर श्री राम की विजय के बाद मंदिर और देवताओं को राजा विभीषण को सौंप दिया गया। भगवान श्री विष्णु विभीषण के सामने उपस्थित हुए और इसी स्थान पर रंगनाथ के रूप में रहने की अपनी इच्छा को व्यक्त किया और तब से कहा जाता है कि भगवान विष्णु श्री रंगनाथस्वामी के रूप में यहां वास करते हैं।

3 नवंबर 2017 को इस मंदिर को बड़े पैमाने पर पुनर्निर्माण और बहाली के काम के बाद सांस्कृतिक विरासत संरक्षण हेतु "यूनेस्को एशिया प्रशांत पुरस्कार मेरिट, 2017" (The UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit 2017) प्रदान किया गया।

Ranganathaswamy Temple

Today we will discuss such a temple, whose area will make you surprised by hearing.  Yes, today we talk about a huge and wonderful temple, named Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple.  The temple is built in 6,31,000 square meters (156 acres), with a circumference of 4 kilometers (10710 ft).  Sri rangam claims to be the largest functional temple, as "Angkor Vat" is the largest but non-functional Hindu temple in the world.  Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India.  The temple is built on the island called Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli town, which is known as 'Bhuloka Vaikunth'. 

 The temple is dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, who is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  The temple is built in the Dravidian style, depicting many glories by saints that highlight the divine arrangement. The complex of this temple is made up of 7 concentric sections and 21 gopurams. The gopuram of the temple is called 'Rajagopuram'.  And is 236 ft (72 m), the tallest in Asia.  There is a myth about this that the coast of Sri Lanka can be seen from above Gopuram.  According to mythology, there was an ashram of Gautam Rishi on the banks of river Godavari in Vedic period.  At that time there was scarcity of water in other areas and in search of water some sages reached the ashram of Gautam Rishi. As per his power, Gautam Rishi honored him and made him a meal.  But the sages started getting jealous of him.  In the lure of fertilizer land, the sages jointly accused Gautam Rishi of cow slaughter by deceit and seized his entire land.

 After this, Gautam Rishi went and worshiped Shri Ranganathaswamy and served him.  Pleased with the service of Gautam Rishi, Sri Ranganatha appeared to him and named the entire area to him.  On the insistence of Gautam Rishi, Brahma himself built this grand temple of the world's largest.  During the exile of Lord Sri Rama, the deities in this temple were worshiped by Lord Rama and after Sri Rama's victory over Ravana, the temple and deities were handed over to King Vibhishana.  Lord Shri Vishnu appeared before Vibhishan and expressed his desire to live in the same place as Ranganatha and since then Lord Vishnu is said to have resided here as Sri Ranganathaswamy.
