अशोक का पेड़ आम के पेड़ के समान 25 से 30 फुट तक ऊंचा, बहुशाकीय, घना व छायादार होता है। इसका तना कुछ लालिमा लिए हुए भूरे रंग का होता है। यह वृक्ष सारे भारतवर्ष में पाया जाता है। इसके पल्लव 9 इंच लंबे, गोल,व नोकदार होते हैं। यह साधारण डंठल के व दोनों ओर से 5 से 6 जोड़ों में लगे होते हैं। इसकी पत्तियां 8 से 10 इंच लम्बी तथा 1 से 2 इंच चौड़ी होती हैं। अशोक के पेड़ के फूल नारंगी रंग के होते हैं, जो बाद में लाल रंग में बदल जाते हैं। ये घने गुच्छों में आते हैं और सुगंधित होते हैं। अशोक के फूलों का इस्तेमाल दवाइयों के साथ-साथ सौंदर्य प्रसाधन में भी किया जाता है।
