आज से करोड़ों साल पहले पृथ्वी पर सबसे बड़े जीव यानी डायनासोर (Dinosaurs) का अस्तित्व था, यह समय पृथ्वी के अस्तित्व का मध्यकाल था, लेकिन आज के युग में केवल डायनासोर के अवशेष ही पाए जाते हैं।

डायनासोर धरती के अब तक के सबसे बड़े सरीसृप (Reptiles) हैं जो कभी अस्तित्व में थे। डायनासोर पृथ्वी पर राज करने वाले सबसे पुराने और सबसे शक्तिशाली जीवों में से एक थे। 

वैज्ञानिकों और शोधकर्ताओं की हमेशा से इस जीव में दिलचस्पी रही है, लेकिन 1993 में फिल्म 'जुरासिक पार्क' (Jurassic Park) के रिलीज होने के बाद आम लोगों में भी इस जीव के बारे में जानने की उत्सुकता बढ़ गई। इनके आकार से लेकर व्यवहार तक लोगों में डायनासोर से जुड़ी हर चीज को लेकर उत्सुकता बढ़ गई है।

• डायनासोर(Dinosaurs) की उत्पत्ति आज से 23 करोड़ साल पहले हुई थी. लगभग 16 करोड़ वर्षों तक पृथ्वी पर रहने के बाद आज से 6.5 करोड़ साल पहले डायनासोर लुप्त हो गए।
• जिस समय पृथ्वी पर डायनासोर मौजूद थे, उस समय सातों महाद्वीप आपस में जुड़े हुए थे। लगभग 20 करोड़ वर्ष पहले महाद्वीप एक दूसरे से अलग होने लगे, जिसके कारण डायनासोर धरती के सभी क्षेत्रों में फैल गए। यही कारण है की अंटार्कटिका सहित पृथ्वी के हर महाद्वीप पर डायनासोर के जीवाश्म (Fossils) पाए गए हैं।
• डायनासो से जुड़े विषय की पढ़ाई करने वाले आदमी को 'Paleontologist' कहते है।
• डायनासोर धरती पर 16 करोड़ साल तक रहे। इंसानो का जीवन इसका केवल 0.1% है। डायनासोर जिस काल में धरती पर जीवित थे, उसे 'Mesozoic era' कहा जाता है। ये इस युग के तीनों भागों में जीवित रहे: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous।
• ऐसा माना जाता है कि डायनासोरों की लगभग 2468 प्रजातियाँ थी। इनमें से कुछ उड़ती भी थी।
• कई डायनासोर के पूंछ 45 फीट से भी ज्यादा लंबे होते थे, जो भागते समय उनका संतुलन बनाने में मदद करते थे।
• डायनासोर के जीवन चक्र के बारे में अभी तक पता नहीं चला है, लेकिन कुछ वैज्ञानिक का दावा है कि ये लगभग 200 साल तक जीवित रहते थे।
• डायनासोर का सबसे बड़ा अंडा बास्केटबॉल जितने आकार का होता था और जितना बड़ा अंडा उतनी मोटी उसकी बाहरी खोल।
• डायनासोर दहाड़ नही सकते थे, ये सिर्फ मुंह बंद करके घुरघुरा सकते थे।
• गुजरात की नर्मदा नदी के किनारे भी डायनासोर के अवशेष मिले हैं, ये करीब 7 करोड़ साल पुराने हैं।
• DNA केवल 20 लाख साल तक जीवित रह सकता है। इसलिए डायनासोर के जीवाश्म का डीएनए टेस्ट नहीं किया जा सकता।
• जो डायनासोर पानी के नजदीक थे, उसके सबसे अच्छे अवशेष मिले हैं।
• डायनासोर की खोपड़ियों में बड़े-बड़े छेद थे, जिसके कारण उनकी खोपड़ी वजन में हल्की होती थी।
• मनुष्य के नवजात शिशु के दिमाग (Brain) का आकार वयस्क डायनासोर के दिमाग (Brain) के आकार से बड़ा होता है। 
• डायनासोर पत्थर के बड़े-बड़े टुकड़े निगल जाते थे। यह इनके पेट में रहकर भोजन पचाने में सहायता करते थे।
• शाकाहारी डायनासोर 1 दिन में 1 टन पत्तियां खा जाते थे।
• डायनासोर करीब 20 मील प्रति घंटे की तेज रफ्तार से दौड सकते थे।
• सबसे बड़ा उड़ने वाला सरीसृप क्वेटज़ालकोटस (Quetzalcoatlus) था। इसके पंख 39 फीट (12 मीटर) तक फैले हुए थे।
• दक्षिणी अमेरिका के देश बोलीविया में एक चूना पत्थर की चट्टान है, जिस पर डायनासोरों के 5 हज़ार से ज्यादा पैरों के निशान हैं। यह लगभग 6 करोड़ 80 लाख साल पुराने बताएं जाते हैं।
• मध्य भारत में डायनासोर के लगभग 1000 से ज्यादा अलगअलग प्रकार के अंडों के अवशेष पाए गए हैं। यह दुनियाभर में किसी एक जगह पर पाए गए अंडों के मुकाबले सबसे अधिक हो सकता है।
• लगभग सभी डायनासोर अंडे देते थे। अब तक 40 प्रकार के अंड़ो के अवशेषों को खोज़ा गया है जो डायनासोरों के थे। डायनासोरों के अंडे एक क्रिकेट बाल से लेकर एक बॉस्केटबाल तक जितने बड़े होते थे।

डायनासोर एकदम से इसलिए खत्म हुए, क्योंकि आज से 6.5 करोड़ साल पहले मैक्सिको के युकैटन प्रायद्वीप से एक 6 मील व्यास वाला उल्का पिंड टकराया था। इस टकराव से 112 मील चौड़ा गढ्ढा बन गया। इसकी वजह से बहुत तेज शॉकवेव पैदा हुई जो पूरी धरती पर फैल गई। इससे जो जानवर कुत्ते से बड़े आकार के थे उन सबका अंत हुआ। हालांकि, शार्क, जेलिफ़िश, मछली, बिच्छू, पक्षी, कीड़े, सांप, कछुआ, छिपकली, और मगरमच्छ जैसे जानवरों की जान बच गई।

  Millions of years ago, the largest creatures on earth i.e. Dinosaurs existed, this time was the middle period of the existence of the earth, but in today's era only the remains of dinosaurs are found.

 Dinosaurs are the largest reptiles on earth that ever existed.  Dinosaurs were one of the oldest and most powerful creatures to rule the earth.

 Scientists and researchers have always been interested in this creature, but after the release of the film 'Jurassic Park' in 1993, the curiosity of knowing about this creature increased among the general public.  From their size to behavior, curiosity has increased among people about everything related to dinosaurs.

 1. Dinosaurs originated 230 million years ago from today.  After living on the earth for about 160 million years, dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago.

2. At the time when dinosaurs were present on the earth, at that time the seven continents were interconnected.  About 200 million years ago the continents began to separate from each other, due to which dinosaurs spread to all areas of the earth.  This is the reason that fossils of dinosaurs have been found on every continent of the earth including Antarctica.

 3. The man who studied dinosaurs is called 'Paleontologist'.

 4. Dinosaurs lived on earth for 160 million years.  Human life is only 0.1% of it.  The period in which dinosaurs lived on Earth is called the 'Mesozoic Era'.  They survived in all three parts of this era: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous.

 5. It is believed that there were about 2468 species of dinosaurs.  Some of them even flew.

 6. Many dinosaurs had tails more than 45 feet long, which helped them balance while running.

 18. There is a limestone rock in the South American country of Bolivia, on which there are more than 5 thousand footprints of dinosaurs.  It is said to be about 6 crore 80 lakh years old.

 19. The remains of more than 1000 different types of eggs of dinosaurs have been found in central India.  This may be the largest number of eggs found in any one place in the world.

 20. Almost all dinosaurs laid eggs.  So far, the remains of 40 types of eggs have been discovered which belonged to dinosaurs.  Dinosaur eggs ranged from as big as a cricket ball to a basketball.

 The dinosaurs died out suddenly because a 6-mile-diameter meteorite hit the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico 65 million years ago.  This collision created a crater 112 miles wide.  Because of this, a very strong shockwave was created which spread all over the earth.  With this, all the animals which were larger than the dog were destroyed.  However, animals such as sharks, jellyfish, fish, scorpions, birds, insects, snakes, tortoises, lizards, and crocodiles survived.
