खजुराहो के सबसे सुंदर मंदिरों में से एक मंदिर है "कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर, खजुराहो (Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Khajuraho)"। यह खजुराहो का सबसे विकसित मंदिर है। खजुराहो भारत देश के पुरातात्विक विरासत और स्थापत्य कला का मुख्य केंद्र है, जहां हजारों साल से भी ज्यादा पुराने मंदिर और उनकी कारीगरी अभी भी देखी जा सकती है। इस नायाब कारीगरी को देखने के लिए पूरे देश से लोग आते हैं। वर्तमान में खजुराहो में लगभग 25 मंदिर बचे हैं। उनमें से कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर अनूठा मंदिर है। कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर स्थापत्य कला का बेजोड़ नमूना है।

माना जाता है कि यह मंदिर ईस्वी सन् 1025 से 1050 के बीच में बना है। मान्यता है कि इस मंदिर को विद्याधर ने महमूद गजनवी को परास्त करने के बाद बनवाया था। वह शिव भक्त थे और उनका मानना था कि शिव की कृपा से ही उन्होंने महमूद गजनी को परास्त किया है। इसलिए उन्होंने इस मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया था। 

कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर खजुराहो के पश्चिमी मंदिर समूह का एक प्रमुख मंदिर है। यह इस समूह के सभी मंदिरों में से सबसे बड़ा और सुंदर मंदिर है। मंदिर शिव भगवान को समर्पित है, जिसके गर्भ गृह में शिवलिंग विराजमान है। यह शिवलिंग संगमरमर से बना है। मंदिर की दीवारों पर बहुत ही सुंदर नक्काशी की गई है। इस मंदिर को सामने से देखने से ऐसा लगता है कि जैसे हम किसी गुफा में प्रवेश कर रहे हैं। गुफा को कंदरा भी कहते हैं, इसलिए इस का नाम कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर पड़ा। अर्थात कंदरा में रहने वाले शिव।

एक ऊंचे चबूतरे पर बने कंदरिया महादेव मंदिर तक जाने के लिए सीढ़िया बनी हुई हैं। मंदिर के अंदर जाते ही मंदिर का तोरण देखने के लिए मिलता है, जो बहुत ही खूबसूरत और एक ही पत्थर का बना हुआ है। तोरण को शुभ आगमन के प्रतीक के रूप में लगाया जाता है। मंदिर में थोड़ा आगे जाने पर छत में फूलों की नक्काशी देखने के लिए मिलती है, जो बहुत ही आकर्षक लगती है। मंदिर के मंडप पर भी तोरण बना हुआ है, जो प्रवेश द्वार वाले तोरण से छोटा है। अंदर जाते हैं तो एक चबूतरा बना नजर आता है। इसके चारों कोने पर खंबे हैं। इस चबूतरे को अंतराल कहते हैं। प्राचीन समय में यहीं बैठकर पूजा-पाठ किया जाता था। 

यह मंदिर संधार शैली और सप्त रथ शैली में बना है। यह खजुराहो का सबसे विकसित मंदिर भी है। इस मंदिर में अर्ध मंडप, मंडप, महामंडप, अंतराल और गर्भगृह हैं। गर्भ गृह के चारों ओर प्रदक्षिणा पथ भी बना है। यह मंदिर अति विकसित शैली संयुक्त मध्य भारत में बना अपनी तरह का शानदार मंदिर है। मंदिर ऊंची जगह पर निर्मित है, जिसमें दो तोरण देखने के लिए मिलते हैं। ये मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार और मंडप पर लगे हैं। मंदिर की दीवारों पर भी कारीगरी की गई है। मंदिर में एक सुंदर शिखर भी देखने को मिलता है। 

खजुराहो का यह एक मात्र मंदिर है, जिसकी जगती के दोनों पार्श्वों में और पीछे प्रक्षेपण है। इसकी जगती लगभग तीन मीटर ऊँची है। इसकी धराशिला ग्रेनाईट पत्थर की है तथा इस पर रेतीले पत्थर की खार-शिलाएँ बनी हुई हैं। मंदिर भित्ति कमल पुष्प की पत्तियों से सजे हैं तथा जालय, कुंभ और बाहर को निकली पट्टिकाएँ तमाल पत्रों से सजी हुई हैं। मंदिर ऊँचे अधिस्थान पर स्थापित है, जिसपर अनेक सुसज्जित मूर्तियाँ हैं।

इन मूर्तियों में दो पंक्तियाँ, हाथियों, घोड़ों, योद्धाओं, शिकारियों, मदारियों, संगीतज्ञों, नर्तकों और भक्तों की मूर्तियाँ आसीन है। मंदिर की तीन पट्टियों में देवी- देवताओं, सुर सुंदरियों, मिथुनों, व्यालों और नागिनों की मूर्तियाँ हैं। मंदिर के भीतर दो मकर-तोरण है। अप्सराओं की प्रतिमाएँ सुंदरता के साथ अंकित की गयी है। यहाँ की सभी मूर्तियाँ लंबी हैं तथा आकृति में संतुलित प्रतीत होती है। यहाँ नारी के कटावों का सौंदर्य स्पष्ट दिखता है। इनके अलावा यहां नागकन्या की मूर्तियां भी हैं जो दीवार के कोने में हाथ जोड़कर खड़ी हुई हैं। साथ ही चंदेल राजवंश का चिन्ह भी यहां की दीवारों पर उकेरे गए हैं।

One of the most beautiful temples of Khajuraho is the "Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Khajuraho". This is the most developed temple of Khajuraho. Khajuraho is the main center of archaeological heritage and architecture of India, where more than thousands of years old temples and their workmanship can still be seen. People come from all over the country to see this unique workmanship. Presently there are about 25 temples left in Khajuraho. Among them Kandariya Mahadev Temple is unique temple. Kandariya Mahadev Temple is a unique example of architecture.

It is believed that this temple was built between 1025 and 1050 AD. It is believed that this temple was built by Vidyadhar after defeating Mahmud Ghaznavi. He was a devotee of Shiva and believed that it was only by the grace of Shiva that he defeated Mahmud of Ghazni. That's why he got this temple built.

The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is one of the major temples of the Western Group of Temples at Khajuraho. This is the largest and most beautiful temple among all the temples in this group. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in whose sanctum the Shivling is enshrined. This Shivling is made of marble. Very beautiful carvings have been done on the walls of the temple. Looking at this temple from the front, it seems as if we are entering a cave. The cave is also known as Kandra, hence its name Kandariya Mahadev Temple. Means Shiva living in Kandra.

There are stairs leading up to the Kandariya Mahadev Temple built on a high platform. As soon as you go inside the temple, you get to see the archway of the temple, which is very beautiful and made of only one stone. Toran is installed as a symbol of auspicious arrival. Going a little further in the temple, one gets to see the carving of flowers in the ceiling, which looks very attractive. There is also a toran on the pavilion of the temple, which is smaller than the toran at the entrance. When we go inside, a platform is seen made. It has pillars at all four corners. This platform is called the gap. In ancient times, worship was done sitting here.

This temple is built in Sandhar style and Sapta Rath style. This is also the most developed temple of Khajuraho. This temple has ardha mandapa, mandapa, mahamandapa, antarala and sanctum sanctorum. A circumambulation path is also built around the sanctum sanctorum. This temple is a magnificent temple of its kind built in the highly developed combined style of Central India. The temple is built on a high place. In which two pylons are seen. These are installed at the main entrance and mandap. Work has also been done on the walls of the temple. A beautiful peak is also seen in the temple.

This is the only temple of Khajuraho, which has projection on both the sides and back of Jagati. Its jagati is about three meters high. Its bedrock is of granite stone and on it there are sandstone outcrops. The temple wall is decorated with lotus leaves and the jalaya, kumbha and the outer plaques are decorated with tamal leaves. The temple is established on a high pedestal, on which there are many decorated idols.

These idols have two rows of seated idols of elephants, horses, warriors, hunters, madaris, musicians, dancers and devotees. The three panels of the temple have idols of gods and goddesses, surasundaris, mithunas, vyalas and serpents. There are two makar-toranas inside the temple. The images of Apsaras are beautifully carved. All the idols here are tall and appear to be balanced in shape. Here the beauty of women's cuts is clearly visible. Apart from these, there are also idols of Nagakanya standing in the corner of the wall with folded hands. Along with this, the symbol of Chandel dynasty is also engraved on the walls here.
