कौवों से तो सभी परिचित हैं। फिर भी उम्मीद करती हूं कि इस लेख से आपको कुछ नया जानने को मिलेगा। कौवों की गिनती प्रकृति को स्वच्छ रखने वाले पक्षियों में की जाती है, क्योंकि यह भोजन के रूप में सड़े गले भोजन एवं मृत जीवो को खाकर वातावरण को स्वच्छ बनाए रखते हैं। 

1. कौवे अंटार्कटिका को छोड़कर पूरी दुनिया में पाए जाते हैं। दुनिया भर में कौवों की लगभग 40 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं, जबकि भारत में दो ही प्रकार के कौवे पाए जाते हैं।
2. कौवे सर्वाहारी होते हैं। यह अपने आहार में 1000 से अधिक खाद्य पदार्थ खाते हैं, जिनमें कीड़े - मकोड़े मांस से लेकर फल, बीज के साथ-साथ मृत और सड़े हुए जीव भी शामिल हैं।
3. कौवों की स्मृति बहुत अच्छी होती है। वह बाद में खाने के लिए भोजन छुपा कर रखते हैं। कभी-कभी दो तीन बार भोजन को इधर-उधर छुपाते हैं और हमेशा याद रखते हैं कि उन्होंने भोजन कहां छुपाया है।
4. कौवों की एक बहुत अच्छी विशेषता होती है कि कौवे आम तौर पर जीवन भर एक ही साथी के प्रति वफादार होते हैं। यह सारा जीवन एक ही साथी के साथ बिताते हैं और साथ में बच्चों को बड़ा करते हैं।

8. कौवों की याददाश्त बहुत तेज होती है। यह इंसानी चेहरे को लगभग 5 सालों तक याद रख सकते हैं।
9. कौवों को धार्मिक दृष्टि से भी जोड़कर देखा जाता है। कुछ लोग इसे शगुन मानते हैं, जबकि कुछ अपशगुन। श्राद्ध के महीने में कौवों की पूजा भी की जाती है।
10. सामान्यतः कौवों का जीवनकाल 10 से 15 वर्ष तक का होता है, जबकि ऑस्ट्रेलियाई कौवे 22 साल तक जीते हैं।
11. यादाश्त तेज होने के साथ-साथ कौवे समझदार भी होते हैं। कभी-कभी अपने शिकार को बिल से बाहर निकालने के लिए छोटी लकड़ियां तथा अन्य साधनों का प्रयोग भी करते हैं।
12. अपने इलाके की रक्षा के लिए कौवे हमेशा तत्पर रहते हैं। इसके लिए वे अपने से बड़े किसी भी जीव से लड़ जाते हैं। खतरा महसूस होने पर कौवे एक दूसरे को आवाज लगाते हैं और झुंड में हमला करते हैं।
13. एक अध्ययन में यह भी पता चला है कि जापान की कैरीऑन (Carrion) कौवे की प्रजाति ट्रैफिक नियमों को भी पहचानने में सक्षम है। यह कौवे जब ट्रैफिक लाइट लाल होती है और गाड़ी रूकती है, तो अखरोट जैसे सख्त खाने को गाड़ी के टायर के नीचे रख देते हैं और गाड़ी चलने के बाद जब अगली बार लाइट लाल होती है, तो टूटा हुआ अखरोट लेकर चले जाते हैं।
14. लोग सोचते है कि कौवे काले ही होते है, जो कि पूरी तरह से सच नहीं है। कुछ ऐसे कौवे भी होते है जो कि सफेद रंग के होते हैं और उन्हें Albino नाम दिया गया है। यह रंग उनमे आनुवंशिक असामान्यताएं के कारण होता है और ऐसे कौवे कम उम्र में ही मर जाते हैं।
15. दुनिया में कौवे की सबसे छोटी प्रजाति मेक्सिको की Dwarf Jay है। इसकी लंबाई 20-23 सेंटीमीटर और वजन मात्र 41 ग्राम होता है। 
16. दुनिया में कौवे के सबसे बड़ी प्रजाति Thick-billed Raven है, जो इथोपिया में पाई जाती है। इसकी लंबाई 65 सेंटीमीटर और वजन 1.5 किलो तक होता है। 
17. कौवे के समूह को ‘murder’ कहा जाता है। 
18. Big Bertha (17 मार्च 1945 से 31 दिसंबर 1993) नामक मादा कौवे के नाम जीवन भर प्रजनन का गिनीज़ बुक वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड (Guinness Book Of World Record) हैं, जिसने लगभग 49 वर्ष तक के जीवन में 39 कौवों को जन्म दिया था। 
19. जहाँ उपयुक्त लगे कौवे वहाँ घोंसले बना लेते हैं। जैसे खंभे, पेड़ की डाली या चट्टानों के किनारे। 
20. नर और मादा दोनों मिलकर टहनियों, बाल और छाल से घोंसला बनाते हैं और अंडे देने के बाद घोंसले में ही मादा अंडों को सेती है। 
21. कौवे एक बार में 5 से 6 अंडे देते हैं और उन्हें 20 से 40 दिनों तक सेते है। ये अंडे हरे या जैतून के रंग के गहरे धब्बेदार होते हैं। 
22. कौवे सिखाए जाने पर ये 1 से 7 तक गिन सकते हैं। 
23. कौवों को निडर पक्षियों में गिना जाता है। वे अपने से 9 गुना अधिक वजन वाले बाज़ का भी पीछा करते हैं। 
24. अपनी निडरता के बावजूद कौवे अक्सर इंसानों से सावधान रहते हैं, जो उनके सबसे बड़े शिकारी हैं। 
25. भारत में कौवों को संदेशवाहक भी माना जाता है। कहा जाता है कि वे कई बार अपनी कर्कश आवाज़ में "कांव-कांव" कर भविष्यवाणी करते हैं या अनहोनी की चेतावनी देते हैं।
