गरुड़ पक्षी चील और बाज से बड़ा होता है, किंतु इसकी चोंच चील से छोटी और सीधी होती है। यह पक्षी दिखने में बाज या चील की तरह ही दिखता है। यदि ग्रंथ पुराणों और शास्त्रों की माने तो जब कोई व्यक्ति मरणासन्न अवस्था में हो और वह गरुड़ पक्षी के दर्शन कर ले तो उसके लिए वह बहुत सौभाग्य की बात होती है और उसे बैकुंठ में स्थान मिलता है और यही पक्षी भगवान विष्णु का वाहन और सूर्य नारायण का सारथी भी है। गरुण पक्षियों की अधिक प्रजातियां उत्तर प्रदेश, झारखंड, छत्तीसगढ़ में है। मनुष्य के लालच के कारण गरुड़ पक्षियों की संख्या कम होती जा रही है।

3. गरुड़ पक्षी का उल्लेख कई पौराणिक कथाओं और ग्रंथों में मिलता है। गरुड़ का उल्लेख सतयुग, द्वापर युग, त्रेता युग, कलयुग जैसे सभी युगों में मिलता है।
4. गरुड़ एक शिकारी पक्षी है, जो पलक झपकते ही अपने शिकार को दबोच लेता है।
5. माना जाता है कि गरुड़ पक्षी का सबसे पसंदीदा भोजन नाग होते हैं।
6. त्रेता युग में जब मेघनाथ ने श्री राम को नागपाश से बांध लिया था तब देवर्षि नारद के आग्रह पर सभी नागों को खाकर गरुण ने ही श्री राम को नागपाश के बंधन से मुक्त किया था।
7. गरुड़ पक्षी के पंजे इतने मजबूत होते हैं कि वह उड़ते उड़ते ही अपने शिकारी को पंजों से पकड़ कर उठा ले जा सकते हैं।
8. गरुड़ अपने शिकार पर 250 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटे की रफ्तार से हमला करता है।

15. मछली, सांप, चूहा, केकड़ा, मुर्गी, खरगोश और अन्य छोटे छोटे जीव गरुड़ का आहार होते हैं।
