मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर (Murudeshwara Temple) कर्नाटक के उत्तर कन्नड़ जिले के भटकल तहसील में स्थित है। यह मंदिर कंडुका पहाड़ी पर स्थित है,जो तीन ओर से अरब सागर से घिरा हुआ है। इसके अलावा यह क्षेत्र पश्चिमी घाट की पहाड़ियों पर स्थित है। यहां भगवान शंकर की विश्व की दूसरी सबसे ऊंची मूर्ति स्थित है। यह मंदिर मंगलुरू से 165 किलोमीटर दूर अरब सागर के तट पर बहुत ही सुंदर एवं शांत स्थान पर बना हुआ है। यही कारण है कि, यहां आध्यात्मिक दिव्यता के साथ प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य भी देखने को मिलता है। मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर सागर तट कर्नाटक के सबसे सुंदर तटों में से एक है।

मंदिर की संरचना    

'मुरूदेश्वर' भगवान शिव का एक नाम है। मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता है यहां पर स्थित भगवान शिव की विशाल प्रतिमा और मंदिर परिसर में स्थित 'राज गोपुरा', जो कि विश्व का सबसे ऊंचा गोपुरा है। मंदिर के अंदर की ओर जाने वाली सीढ़ियों के प्रारंभ में ही कंक्रीट के दो जीवंत हाथी की प्रतिमाएं हैं। मंदिर के गर्भगृह में भगवान शिव का आत्म लिंग स्थापित है।

 भगवान शिव की 123 फुट ऊँची विशालकाय प्रतिमा यहाँ का प्रमुख आकर्षण है।अरब सागर में बहुत दूर से ही इसे देखा जा सकता है। भगवान शिव की इस प्रतिमा के चार हाथ हैं, जिन्हें सोने से सजाया गया है। किसी भी द्रविड़ वास्तुकला के मंदिर के समान ही इस मंदिर में भी गोपुरा का निर्माण कराया गया है, जो 20 मंजिला इमारत के बराबर है और जिसकी ऊँचाई लगभग 250 फुट है। 

मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर का इतिहास एवं कथा-

इस मंदिर का इतिहास रामायण काल एवं रावण से जुड़ा हुआ है, इसलिए भी यह मंदिर विशेष है। कथाओं में बताया गया है कि, रावण जब अमरता का वरदान पाने के लिए भगवान शिव की तपस्या कर रहा था, तब शिवजी ने उसकी तपस्या से खुश होकर उसे एक शिवलिंग दिया, जिसे ‘आत्मलिंग’ कहा जाता है, और कहा कि अगर तुम अमर होना चाहते हो तो इसे लंका ले जाकर स्थापित कर देना, लेकिन एक बात का ध्यान रखना कि इसे जिस जगह पर रख दोगे, ये वहीं स्थापित हो जाएगा, इसके बाद इसे कोई उठा नहीं पाएगा। दैवीय कारणों से हुआ भी ऐसा ही। रावण ने रास्ते में ही लिंग को धरती पर रख दिया, जिससे वह वहीं पर स्थापित हो गया।इससे रावण को क्रोध आ गया और उसने शिवलिंग को नष्ट करने का प्रयास किया।इसी क्रम में जिस वस्तु से शिवलिंग ढका हुआ था वह म्रिदेश्वर के कन्दुका पहाड़ी पर जा गिरा। म्रिदेश्वर को ही अब मुरुदेश्वर के नाम से जाना जाता है।

इस्लामी आक्रमण में हुए नुकसान के बाद व्यापारी ने दिया वर्तमान स्वरूप

भारत के कई अन्य मंदिरों की तरह यह मंदिर भी इस्लामी कट्टरपंथ की भेंट चढ़ा। मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर का प्राचीन स्वरूप इस्लामी शासक हैदर अली के द्वारा नष्ट कर दिया गया था। इसके बाद इस मंदिर का वर्तमान दृश्य-स्वरूप एक स्थानीय व्यापारी द्वारा बनवाया गया।

मंदिर की विशालता और भव्यता को देखकर ऐसा प्रतीत हो सकता है कि इस मंदिर का निर्माण सरकार द्वारा कराया गया है, लेकिन ऐसा है नहीं। मंदिर में स्थित विशाल गोपुरा का जीर्णोद्धार और भगवान शिव की विशालकाय मूर्ति का निर्माण स्थानीय व्यापारी और समाजसेवी आरएन शेट्टी के द्वारा कराया गया। मूर्ति के निर्माण में ही लगभग 2 साल का समय लगा और लगभग 5 करोड़ रुपए की लागत आई। इस मूर्ति के शिल्पकार 'शिवमोग्गा के काशीनाथ' हैं।

भगवान शिव की मूर्ति को इस प्रकार बनाया गया है कि इस पर सीधे ही सूर्य की किरणें गिरती रहें और यह मूर्ति लगातार चमकती रहे।एक तरफ भगवान भोले के दर्शन तो दूसरी तरफ समुद्र से घिरी यह जगह है, जो अपने आप में किसी स्वर्ग से कम नहीं।

Apart from this, this region is situated on the hills of the Western Ghats. The world's second tallest statue of Lord Shankar is situated here. This temple is built at a very beautiful and peaceful place on the coast of Arabian Sea, 165 km from Mangaluru. This is the reason, along with spiritual divinity, natural beauty is also seen here. Murudeshwar Temple Sea Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Karnataka.

'Murudeshwar' is a name of Lord Shiva. The biggest feature of the Murudeshwar temple is the huge statue of Lord Shiva located here and the 'Raj Gopura' located in the temple complex, which is the world's tallest gopura. At the very beginning of the stairs leading inside the temple are two living concrete figures of elephants. The Self-Linga of Lord Shiva is installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

 The main attraction here is a huge 123 feet high statue of Lord Shiva. It can be seen from far away in the Arabian Sea. This idol of Lord Shiva has four hands, which are decorated with gold. Like any temple of Dravidian architecture, a Gopura has been constructed in this temple, which is equivalent to a 20-storey building and whose height is about 250 feet.

History and Story of Murudeshwar Temple-

The history of this temple is associated with the Ramayana period and Ravana, so this temple is also special. It is told in the legends that, when Ravana was doing penance to Lord Shiva to get the boon of immortality, Shiva, being pleased with his penance, gave him a Shivling, which is called 'Atmalinga', and said that if you are immortal. If you want to be there, take it to Lanka and install it, but keep one thing in mind that wherever you keep it, it will be established there, after that no one will be able to lift it. The same thing happened due to divine reasons. Ravana placed the linga on the earth on the way, so that it was established there. This angered Ravana and he tried to destroy the Shivalinga. fell on the hill. Mrideshwar is now known as Murudeshwar.

After the loss in the Islamic invasion, the merchant gave the present form

Like many other temples in India, this temple also succumbed to Islamic fundamentalism. The ancient form of Murudeshwar temple was destroyed by the Islamic ruler Hyder Ali. After this the present appearance of this temple was built by a local merchant.

Seeing the vastness and grandeur of the temple, it may appear that this temple has been constructed by the government, but it is not so. The huge Gopura located in the temple was renovated and the huge idol of Lord Shiva was constructed by the local businessman and philanthropist RN Shetty. The construction of the idol itself took about 2 years and cost around Rs 5 crore. The architect of this idol is 'Kashinath of Shivamogga'.

The idol of Lord Shiva has been made in such a way that the rays of the sun fall directly on it and this idol shines continuously. On one side there is a vision of Lord Bhole and on the other side this place is surrounded by sea, which in itself is a heaven. not less.
