ऐसा कौन इंसान होगा जिसे तितलियां पसंद ना हो। तितलियों को उड़ता देख, एक से दूसरे फूलों पर बैठता हुआ देख मन को शांति मिलती है। रंग - बिरंगी प्यारी -प्यारी तितलीयाँ सबके मन को मोह लेती हैं। यह देखने में बेहद खूबसूरत होती हैं। वैसे तो कहने के लिए यह भी एक प्रकार का कीड़ा है, परंतु प्रकृति ने इसे इतना सुंदर और आकर्षक बनाया है कि यह अशांत मन को शांत करने की क्षमता रखती हैं। प्यारी-प्यारी रंग - बिरंगी तितलियों को देखना तो सभी पसंद करते हैं, परंतु इससे जुड़ी कुछ रोचक बातें हैं, जो सबको पता नहीं होती। आज उन्हीं रोचक बातों कि यहां चर्चा करते हैं।

• तितली कीट वर्ग का सामान्य रूप से हर जगह पाई जाने वाली प्राणी है। इसके शरीर के मुख्य 3 भाग होते हैं - सिर, वक्ष तथा उदर। 
• इसके 2 जोड़ी पंख तथा 3 जोड़ी संधि युक्त पैर होते हैं। इसके सिर पर एक जोड़ी संयुक्त आंखें होती हैं तथा मुंह में घड़ी के स्प्रिंग की तरह खोखली लंबी सूंड होती है, जिससे वह फूलों का रस चूसती हैं। आगे निकले एंटीना की मदद से तितलियां किसी भी वस्तु एवं उसकी गंध का पता लगाती है।
• दुनिया भर में तितलियों की 24,000 से भी ज्यादा प्रकार की प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं। भारत में इसकी 15,00 प्रजातियाँ पाई जाती हैं। यह अंटार्कटिका को छोड़कर हर महाद्वीप पर पाई जाती हैं।
• सामान्यतया तितली 4 पंखों की पाई जाती है, परंतु धरती की सबसे बड़ी तितली के 12 पंख हैं। 
• सबसे बड़ी तितली 12 इंच की और सबसे छोटी तितली आधे इंच की है।

•  तितलियों का वजन गुलाब के फूल की दो पंखुड़ियों जितनी होती है।
• तितलियों की औसत आयु 1 महीने की होती है। परंतु कुछ प्रजातियों में अलग-अलग उम्र की हो सकती है। कुछ प्रजातियां 9 महीने तक जिंदा रहती हैं। तितलियों में मादा तितली नर की तुलना में अधिक उम्र तक जिंदा रहती हैं।
• एक मजेदार बात यह है कि तितलीयों की आंखों में 6000 लेंस होते हैं, जिनकी मदद से यह अल्ट्रावायलेट किरणों तक को भी देख सकती हैं। परंतु इन्हें सिर्फ लाल, हरा और पीला रंग ही दिखाई देता है।
• वैसे तो तितलियां स्वच्छंद उड़ती हैं। फूलों का रस पीती है और स्वभाव से डरने वाली होती हैं, परंतु यदि तितलियों को मौका दिया जाए तो यह मनुष्य का खून, पसीना और आंसू भी पी सकती हैं। 
• अमेजॉन के जंगलों में पाई जाने वाली तितलियां शरीर में सोडियम की कमी को पूरी करने के लिए कछुओं के आंसू पीती हैं।

• तितलियों के पास एक लंबी ट्यूब जैसी जीभ होती है, जिसके जरिए वे अपने भोजन को सोख लेती हैं। इनकी कुछ प्रजातियों को कई बार जानवरों के खुले घाव के खून पीते हुए भी देखा गया है।
• तितलियां बहरी होती हैं, यह सुन नहीं सकती, परंतु यह कंपन महसूस करती हैं। वैसे 1912 में कुछ वैज्ञानिकों द्वारा इसके कान की पुष्टि हुई है।
• इनका कंकाल, इनके शरीर के बाहर होता है। इससे उनके शरीर में पानी के तत्व की सुरक्षा होती है।
• धरती पर मोनार्क तितलियाँ ही एकमात्र ऐसी हैं, जो हर सर्दियों में औसतन 25,00 मील की यात्रा तय करती हैं।
• तितलियां हमेशा पत्तों के निचले हिस्से में ही अंडे देती हैं, इसीलिए ज्यादातर इनके अंडे दिखाई नहीं देते।
• यह अपने पैरों से पता लगा लेती हैं कि कौन सा पत्ता अंडा देने के लिए सही है। 
• जिस अंडे से तितली बाहर निकलती है उसी अंडे का छिलका उसका पहला भोजन होता है, जिसको कोकून कहते हैं। 
• बर्डविंग नामक प्रजाति के तितलियों के पंख लगभग पक्षियों की तरह होते हैं और यह चिड़ियों की तरह उड़ती भी हैं। ऐसा माना जाता है कि इनके उड़ने की रफ्तार ही नहीं बल्कि उनका दिमाग भी तेज गति से चलता है।

• तितली किसी भी चीज का स्वाद भी पैरों से ही चखती हैं। तितली की कुछ प्रजातियां केवल एक ही प्रकार के पौधे पर अंडे देती हैं।
• जन्म के बाद एक इल्ली (लार्वा) को तितली बनने में 10 से 15 दिन लगते हैं।
• तितलियां ठंडे खून की होती हैं। यह तभी उड़ सकती है, जब इनके शरीर का तापमान 50°F अर्थात 29°C से ज्यादा हो। अगर तापमान 12°C से कम हो जाए, तो उस वक्त तितलियाँ अपने उड़ने की क्षमता खो देतीं हैं।
• एक हैरान करने वाली बात यह भी है कि कई वयस्क तितलियां अपना सारा खाना पूरी तरह से पचाने के बाद अपने शरीर से कुछ भी कचरा बाहर नहीं निकालती हैं।
• तितलियों के पंख पारदर्शी होते हैं, जो रंग और पैटर्न हम देखते हैं, वह दरअसल पंखों के ऊपर लगे पतले परत पर प्रकाश के परावर्तन से बनते हैं।
• बकऑय नाम की तितली सबसे ज्यादा पाई जाती है, जिसके शरीर में पर आंखों की तरह दिखने वाले अलग-अलग रंग के पैटर्न बने होते हैं। 

• आमतौर पर तितलियां 17 फीट/सेकंड की रफ्तार से उड़ती है, परंतु "स्किपर तितली" इतनी तेज उड़ती है कि घोड़े की चाल को पीछे छोड़ सकती है।
• तितलियों का नाता हमसे बहुत पुराना है। प्राचीन मिस्र की सभ्यता में लगभग 3500 की संख्य में पुरानी चित्रकला में तितली छपी हुई पाई गई है। 
• तितलियों की कुछ प्रजातियां जहरीली भी होती हैं।
• अपने पंख की आवाज से तितलियां एक दूसरे के संपर्क में रहती हैं। कुछ अन्य तितलियां दूसरों के संपर्क में रहने के लिए एक महक को उत्पन्न करती हैं, जिसे दूसरी तितलियाँ 2 किलोमीटर की दूरी से सूंघ लेती हैं।
• तितली की कई प्रजातियां बहुरूपी होते हैं और अपने आसपास के वातावरण में घुलने-मिलने की क्षमता रखते हैं।
• नर तितली गीली मिट्टी से भी पानी पीते हैं क्योंकि उनको कुछ उचित मिनरल्स फूलों से नहीं मिलते।
