रिश्वत का खेल

कृष्णदेव राय कला प्रेमी थे। इसीलिए कलाकारों का प्रोत्साहन बढ़ाने के लिए उनके अच्छे प्रदर्शन के लिए उन्हें पुरस्कार देकर सम्मानित भी किया करते थे। कलाकारों को सम्मानित करने से पहले वे एक बार तेनालीराम से जरुर पूछते थे। महाराज की ये बात तेनालीराम के विरोधियों को बहुत खलती थी।

तेनालीराम कुछ दिनों से राजदरबार में नहीं आ रहे थे, जिसका फायदा उठाते हुए उसके विरोधियों ने महाराज के कान भरने शुरू कर दिए। उनमें से एक विरोधी महाराज से बोला, "महाराज तेनालीराम रिश्वतखोर है।" दूसरा बोला, "महाराज वह जिसको जितना बड़ा पुरस्कार दिलवाता है उससे उतनी ही बड़ी रिश्वत लेता है।" अब रोज़ दरबार में महाराज को ये ही सब सुनने को मिलता, जिससे महाराज को भी तेनालीराम पर शक होने लगा। जब कुछ दिनों बाद तेनालीराम ने राजदरबार में आना शुरू कर दिया, तो महाराज ने उनसे कुछ कहा तो नहीं लेकिन अब तेनालीराम से कुछ भी पूछना उन्होंने बंद कर दिया।

अब तेनालीराम को भी लगने लगा की उनके पीछे जरुर कुछ बात हुई है, जिसकी वजह से महाराज ने मुझसे पूछना बिल्कुल बंद कर दिया है। एक बार दरबार में बहुत सारे कलाकार आए हुए थे। उनमें से तेनालीराम ने एक को छोडकर सब को पुरस्कार देने को कहा, लेकिन महाराज ने उसका बिल्कुल उल्टा किया। उन्होंने सारे कलाकारों को खाली हाथ ही भेज दिया और उस एक को ढेरों इनाम देकर विदा किया। महाराज का ये रवैया देखकर तेनालीराम अपने आप को अपमानित महसूस कर रहे थे।वही तेनालीराम के विरोधी ये सब देखकर बहुत खुश हो रहे थे। 

एक बार दरबार में एक गायक आया। उसने अपनी कला का प्रदर्शन करने के लिए महाराज की आज्ञा मांगी।महाराज ने अगले दिन उसे संगीतशाला में आकर अपनी कला का प्रदर्शन करने का आदेश दिया। अगले दिन उस गायक का प्रदर्शन देखने के लिए संगीतशाला में काफी भीड़ जमा हो गई थी। महाराज के आते ही उसने गायन शुरू किया तो चारों ओर वाह -वाह होने लगी। गायन समाप्त होते ही तेनालीराम बोले, "तुमने बहुत अच्छा प्रदर्शन किया है। मैंने तुम्हारे जैसा कलाकार आज तक नही देखा। तुम्हारे प्रदर्शन के लिए तुम्हें कम से कम पंद्रह हज़ार मुद्राएँ मिलनी चाहिए।"

महाराज तेनालीराम की ओर देखते हुए बोले, "सच में तुम्हारा प्रदर्शन तो काबिले तारीफ था, लेकिन तुम्हें देने के लिए हमारे पास इतना धन ही नहीं है कि हम तुम्हें दे सके। बेचारा गायक निराश होकर अपना सामान बटोरने लगा कि तभी तेनालीराम ने एक पोटली लाकर उसे थमा दी। तभी राजपुरोहित बोले, "ये तो महाराज का अपमान हो रहा है। जब महाराज ने उस कलाकार को कुछ नहीं दिया तो तेनालीराम को देने की क्या जरुरत थी?"

यह सुनते ही महाराज गुस्से से लाल- पीले हो गए। उन्होंने सैनिकों को तेनालीराम और गायक को पकड़कर अपने पास लाने का आदेश दिया। सैनिक गायक और तेनालीराम को पकड़कर महाराज के पास ले आए। महाराज ने एक सेवक से उस पोटली को छिनकर उसे खोलने का आदेश दिया। जैसे ही सेवक ने पोटली खोली तो उसमें मिट्टी का खाली बर्तन था, जिसे देखकर वहाँ उपस्थित सभी लोग अचंभित थे। महाराज ने तेनालीराम से पूछा, " तुमने ये खाली बर्तन क्यूँ दिया है?” तेनालीराम बोले, "महाराज यह गायक बहुत दूर से आपके पास आया था। मैंने सोचा पुरस्कार न सही कम से कम इस खाली बर्तन में वाहवाही भर कर ले जाएगा। इसीलिए मैंने ये खाली बर्तन इसे दे दिया।

तेनालीराम का जवाब सुनते ही महाराज का गुस्सा फुर्र हो गया और उन्होंने उस गायक को पन्द्रह हज़ार स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ इनाम के रूप में दे दी। इस प्रकार तेनालीराम ने अपने बुद्धि बल से अपने विरोधियों की चाल पर पानी फेर दिया।

Krishnadeva Raya was an art lover. That is why to increase the encouragement of the artists, they used to honor them by giving them awards for their good performance. He used to ask Tenaliram once before honoring the artists. This word of Maharaj was very painful to the opponents of Tenaliram.

Tenaliram was not coming to the court for a few days, taking advantage of which his opponents started filling the ears of Maharaj. One of them said to the opponent Maharaj, "Maharaj Tenaliram is a bribe-taker." The other said, "Your Majesty, the bigger the reward he gets, the bigger the bribe he takes." Now every day in the court, Maharaj would get to hear all this, due to which Maharaj also started doubting Tenaliram. When Tenaliram started coming to the court after a few days, Maharaj did not say anything to him but now he stopped asking anything from Tenaliram.

Now Tenaliram also started feeling that something must have happened behind him, due to which Maharaj has stopped asking me at all. Once many artists had come to the court. Among them, Tenaliram asked everyone to give the prize except one, but Maharaj did the exact opposite. He sent all the artists empty handed and sent that one away with many prizes. Seeing this attitude of Maharaj, Tenaliram was feeling humiliated himself. Tenaliram's opponents were getting very happy seeing all this.

Once a singer came to the court. He sought Maharaj's permission to perform his art. The next day the Maharaj ordered him to come to the Sangeetshaala and perform his art. The next day a large crowd had gathered in the concert hall to watch the singer's performance. As soon as Maharaj came, he started singing and there was wah-wah all around. As soon as the singing ended, Tenaliram said, "You have performed very well. I have never seen an artist like you. You should get at least fifteen thousand mudras for your performance."

Looking at the Maharaja Tenaliram said, "Your performance was really commendable, but we do not have enough money to give you that we can give you. Poor singer started collecting his belongings in despair when Tenaliram took a bundle. He brought it and handed it over. Then the Rajpurohit said, "This is insulting to the Maharaj. When Maharaj did not give anything to the artist, what was the need to give it to Tenaliram?"

On hearing this, Maharaj turned red and yellow with anger. He ordered the soldiers to capture Tenaliram and the singer and bring them to him. The soldiers caught the singer and Tenaliram and brought them to Maharaj. The Maharaj snatched that bundle from a servant and ordered it to be opened. As soon as the servant opened the bundle, there was an empty earthen pot in it, seeing which all the people present there were astonished. Maharaj asked Tenaliram, "Why have you given this empty vessel?" Tenaliram said, "Sir, this singer had come to you from far away. I thought the award would at least be filled with applause in this empty vessel. That's why I gave this empty vessel to him.

On hearing Tenaliram's answer, Maharaj's anger became furious and he gave fifteen thousand gold coins to the singer as a reward. In this way, Tenaliram with the power of his intelligence turned water on the tricks of his opponents.
