कुशल ककड़ी 

एक विद्वान परिवार में 7 भाई और 1 बहन थी। परिवार का सबसे बड़ा भाई बहुत ही शीलवान और गुणी था। उसने अपने समय की अनेक विद्याओं का अच्छा ज्ञान प्राप्त कर रखा था।

जब उसके माता पिता की मृत्यु हो गई, तब उसने सन्यास वरण करने का निश्चय किया। भाई के आदर्शों पर चलने वाले उसके छोटे भाई- बहन भी उसका अनुसरण करना चाहते थे। उनके साथ ही उनकी सेवा- टहल के लिए उनका एक नौकर और एक नौकरानी भी हो लिए। उन लोगों ने वन में एक जलाशय के किनारे अपनी अलग-अलग कुटिया बनाई। फिर उन्होंने यह व्रत लिया कि दिन भर में वे केवल एक बार ही भोजन करेंगे और प्रत्येक पांचवे दिन बड़े भाई के उपदेश सुनने के लिए इकट्ठा होंगे।

नौकरानी उनके लिए प्रतिदिन कमल की ककड़ी जलाशय से निकाल 8 बराबर भागों में बांट देती थी। दो लकड़ियों को बजा उन सभी को यह सूचना दिया करती थी कि उनका भोजन तैयार है। वह भाई-बहन उम्र में क्रम से आते और अपना हिस्सा उठा पुनः अपनी कुटिया में लौट जाते थे। हां, प्रत्येक पांचवें दिन वे सभी बड़े भाई का उपदेश सुनने के लिए अवश्य इकट्ठे होते थे। 

उनकी कठिन साधना को देख परीक्षण हेतु एक शातिर शरारती प्रतिष्ठित धूर्त 1 दिन वहां आ पहुंचा। उस दिन नौकरानी ने जब लकड़ियां बजाकर कुटिया वासियों को यह संदेश दिया कि उनका भोजन तैयार है, तो प्रतिष्ठित धूर्त ने अदृश्य रूप से बड़े भाई के हिस्से की कमल ककड़ी चुरा ली। बड़े भाई ने जो सबसे पहले वहां पहुंचता था, जब अपने हिस्से की ककड़ी गायब देखी, गई तो वह चुपचाप ही अपनी कुटिया को लौट गया।

 फिर से भाई-बहन आते गए और अपने हिस्से का भोजन लेकर अपनी अपनी कुटिया को लौट गए। इस प्रकार 5 दिनों तक प्रतिष्ठित धूर्त ने वैसा ही किया। जिससे बड़ा भाई बिना भोजन किए ही साधना करता रहा और उसका स्वास्थ्य बिगड़ गया। 

पांचवें दिन जब सारे भाई- बहन नौकर- नौकरानी बड़े भाई के उपदेश सुनने इकट्ठे हुए, तो वह बिल्कुल रुग्ण दिखा। उसके मुख से आवाज भी ठीक से नहीं निकल रही थी। कारण जानने के बाद सभी बड़े खिन्न हुए, फिर भी उन्होंने चोर की भर्त्सना नहीं की बल्कि उसकी मंगल कामना की। इसे सुनकर प्रतिष्ठित धूर्त लज्जित हुआ और उनसे क्षमा याचना करने लगा और बड़े भाई के शील व्रत की विशेष प्रशंसा की।

Lotus roots

 A scholarly family had 7 brothers and 1 sister. The eldest brother of the family was very Urgent and virtuous. He had a good knowledge of many disciplines of his time.

 When his parents died, he decided to retire. Her younger siblings, who followed her brother's ideals, also wanted to follow her. Along with him, he also had a servant and a maid for his service. They built their own huts on the banks of a reservoir in the forest. They then took a vow that they would eat only once a day and every fifth day they would gather to listen to the elder brother's sermons.

 The maid used to divide the lotus cucumber from the reservoir into 8 equal parts daily for them. The two timbers used to inform all of them that their food was ready. Those brothers and sisters used to come in order and took their share and returned to their hut. Yes, every fifth day they all used to gather to listen to the elder brother's sermon.

 Seeing his hard work, a vicious mischievous rogue arrived there for the test on day 1. On that day, when the maid gave a message to the hut dwellers that their food was ready, the reputed rascal invisibly stole the lotus cucumber of the elder brother's part. The eldest brother, who first reached there, when he saw his part of the cucumber disappear, he quietly returned to his hut.

 Again the siblings came and took their share of food and returned to their hut. 

 In this way, the reputed rascal did the same for 5 days. Due to which the elder brother continued to practice without food and his health deteriorated.

 On the fifth day, when all the siblings and servants gathered together to listen to the elder brother's sermon, he looked absolutely sick. The sound was not coming out of his mouth properly. After knowing the reason everyone was very upset, yet they did not condemn the thief but wished him well. Hearing this, the reputed sly was ashamed and apologized to him and praised the elder brother's piety.
