  दानव केकड़ा 

हिमालय के एक सरोवर में कभी एक दानव केकड़ा निवास किया करता था। उसका सबसे प्रिय आहार हाथी था। जब भी हाथी के झुंड उस सरोवर में पानी पीने अथवा जल क्रीड़ा के लिए आते तो उनमें से एक को वो अपना आहार अवश्य बना लेता था। चूंकि हाथी समूह के लिए उस वन में जल का कोई अन्य स्रोत नहीं था, जिस वजह से गजराज ने अपनी गर्भिणी हथिनी को दूर किसी प्रदेश में भेज दिया, ताकि कहीं गलती से हथिनी उस दानव केकड़े का ग्रास ना बन जाए।

कुछ ही महीनों के बाद हथिनी ने एक सुंदर और बलिष्ठ हाथी को जन्म दिया  जब वह बड़ा हुआ तो उसने अपने पिता का ठिकाना पूछा और यह भी जानना चाहा कि आखिर उसे इतने दिनों तक पिता का वियोग क्यों झेलना पड़ रहा है। जब उसने सारी बातें जान ली तो वह माता की आज्ञा लेकर अपने पिता से मिलने हिमालय के उसी वन में जा पहुंचा। फिर उसने पिता को प्रणाम कर अपना परिचय देते हुए उस दानव केकड़े को मारने की इच्छा व्यक्त की और इस महान कार्य के लिए पिता की आज्ञा और आशीर्वाद की याचना की। पिता ने पहले तो उसकी याचना ठुकरा दी, परंतु बार-बार अनुरोध से उसने अपने पुत्र को पराक्रम दिखाने का अवसर दे ही दिया।

हथिनी के पुत्र ने अपनी सेना तैयार की और अपने शत्रु की सारी गतिविधियों का पता लगाया। तब उसे यह विदित हुआ कि वह केकड़ा हाथियों को तभी पकड़ता था, जब वह सरोवर से लौटने लगते थे और लौटने वालों में भी वह उसी हाथी को पकड़ता था जो सबसे अंत में बाहर निकलता था।

सूचनाओं के अनुकूल उसने अपनी योजना बनाई और अपने साथियों के साथ सरोवर में पानी पीने के लिए प्रवेश किया। साथियों में उसकी प्रेयसी भी थी।

जब सारे हाथी सरोवर से बाहर निकलने लगे तो वह जानबूझकर सबसे पीछे रह गया। तभी केकड़े ने उचित अवसर पर उसके पिछले पैर को इस प्रकार पकड़ा जैसे एक लोहार लोहे के एक पिंड को अपने चिमटे से पकड़ता है। हाथी ने जब अपना पैर खींचना चाहा तो वह टस से मस नहीं हो पा रहा था। घबराकर हाथी ने चिघाड़ना शुरू किया, जिसे सुनकर हाथियों में भगदड़ मच गई। वे उसकी मदद को ना आकर इधर उधर भाग खड़े हुए। हाथी ने अपनी प्रेयसी को पुकारा और उस से सहायता मांगी। प्रेयसी हाथी को सच्चे दिल से चाहती थी। तत्काल अपने हाथी को छुड़ाने के लिए वह उसके पास आई और केकड़े से कहा-

"तू है एक बहादुर केकड़ा

नहीं है तेरे जैसा कोई दूसरा 

हो वह गंगा या नर्मदा 

नहीं है शक्तिशाली तेरे जैसा कोई बंदा"

मादा हाथी की प्यार भरी बातें सुनकर केकड़ा प्रसन्न हो गया और उसने अपनी पकड़ ढीली कर दी। तभी हाथी ने प्रसन्नता भरी चिंघाड़ लगाई, जिसे सुनकर सारे हाथी इकट्ठे होकर उस केकड़े को ढकेलते हुए तट पर ले आए और पैरों से कुचल- कुचल कर उसको मार डाला।

The Giant Crab

 A demon crab once inhabited a lake in the Himalayas. His favorite food was elephant. Whenever elephant herds came to the lake to drink water or water sports, one of them would definitely make his own diet. Since there was no other source of water in that forest for the elephant group, Gajraj sent his womb elephant to a distant region, so that by no means accidentally the elephant would become the grass of that demon crab.

 After a few months, Hathini gave birth to a beautiful and sacrificial elephant. When he grew up, he asked his father's whereabouts and also wanted to know why he had to bear his father's separation for so many days. When he got to know all the things, he went to the same forest in the Himalayas to meet his father with the permission of his mother. Then he prostrated himself to the father and expressed his desire to kill that demon crab and requested the father's command and blessings for this great work. The father first turned down his plea, but with repeated requests, he gave his son an opportunity to show his might.

 Hathini's son prepared his army and tracked down all the activities of his enemy. Then he came to know that he used to catch crab elephants only when he started returning from the lake and among the returning he also caught the same elephant which finally came out.

 In accordance with the information, he made his plan and along with his companions entered the lake to drink water. He was also his beloved among friends.

 When all the elephants started coming out of the lake, he deliberately stayed behind. Then the crab, on the appropriate occasion, caught his hind leg like a blacksmith holding an iron ingot with his tongs. When the elephant wanted to pull his leg, he could not bear the pain. Panicked, the elephant began to chirp, which caused panic among the elephants. They did not come to his aid and ran away. The elephant called his beloved and asked him for help. The beloved loved the elephant with all her heart. Immediately to rescue her elephant, she came to him and told the crab-

 "You are a brave crab

 There is no other like you

 Be it ganga or narmada

 No man is powerful like you "

 The crab was pleased to hear the female elephant's affectionate things and loosened her grip. Then the elephant gave a happy chirp, which all the elephants gathered and brought the crab to the shore and crushed him by the feet and killed him.
