 बकरे की बलि की कथा 

श्राद्ध-भोज के लिए किसी ब्राह्मण ने एक बार एक बकरे की बलि चढ़ाने की तैयारी आरंभ की। उसके शिष्य बकरे को नदी में स्नान कराने ले गये। नहाने के समय बकरा एकाएक बड़ी जोर से हँसने लगा ; फिर तत्काल दु:ख के आँसू बहाने लगा। उसके विचित्र व्यवहार से चकित होकर शिष्यों ने उससे जब ऐसा करने का कारण जानना चाहा तो बकरे ने कहा कि कारण वह उनके गुरु के सामने ही बताएगा।

ब्राह्मण के सामने बकरे ने यह बतलाया कि वह भी कभी एक ब्राह्मण-पुरोहित था और एक बार उसने भी एक बकरे की बलि चढ़ायी थी, जिसकी सज़ा वह आज तक पा रहा था। तब से चार सौ निन्यानवे जन्मों में उसका गला काटा जा चुका था और अब उसका गले कटने की अंतिम बारी है। इस बार उसे एक बुरे कर्म का अंतिम दंड भुगतना था, इसलिए वह प्रसन्न होकर हँस रहा था। किन्तु वह दु:खी हो कर इसलिए रोया था कि अगली बार से उस ब्राह्मण के भी सिर पाँच सौ बार काटे जाएंगे।

ब्राह्मण ने उसकी बात को गंभीरता से लिया और उसके बलि की योजना स्थगित कर दी तथा अपने शिष्यों से उसे पूर्ण संरक्षण की आज्ञा दी। किन्तु बकरे ने ब्राह्मण से कहा कि ऐसा संभव नहीं था क्योंकि कोई भी संरक्षण उसके कर्मों के विपाक को नष्ट नहीं कर सकते क्योंकि कोई भी प्राणी अपने कर्मों से मुक्त नहीं हो सकता।

जब शिष्य-गण उस बकरे को ले कर उसे यथोचित स्थान पर पहुँचाने जा रहे थे। तभी रास्ते में किनारे एक पेड़ के शाखा पर नर्म-नर्म पत्तों को देख ज्योंही बकरे ने अपना सिर ऊपर किया, तभी एक वज्रपात हुआ और पेड़ के ऊपर पहाड़ी पर स्थित एक बड़े चट्टान के कई टुकड़े छिटके। एक बड़ा टुकड़ा उस बकरे के सिर पर इतनी ज़ोर से आ लगा कि पलक झपकते ही उसका सिर धड़ से अलग हो गया।

The story of the goat's sacrifice

 A Brahmin once started preparations to sacrifice a goat for a feast.  His disciples took the goat to bathe in the river.  At the time of bathing the goat suddenly started laughing very loudly;  Then immediately started shedding tears of sorrow.  Surprised by his bizarre behavior, when the disciples asked him to know the reason for doing so, the goat said that he would reveal the reason in front of his guru.

 In front of a Brahmin, the goat told that he too was once a Brahmin-priest and once he had also sacrificed a goat, whose punishment he was receiving till date.  Since then, his throat was cut in four hundred ninety-nine births and now it is his last turn to cut his throat.  This time he had to suffer the ultimate penalty of a bad karma, so he was laughing in delight.  But he was crying because he was sad that the head of that Brahmin would be cut five hundred times from next time.

 The Brahmin took his point seriously and postponed the plan of his sacrifice and ordered him to complete protection from his disciples.  But the goat told the Brahmin that this was not possible because no protection could destroy the calamity of his deeds because no creature could be free from its deeds.

 When the disciple was going to take the goat and bring it to the proper place.  Just as the goat raised its head on looking at the soft leaves on the branch of a tree on the way, then a thunderclap occurred and splashed several pieces of a big rock on the hill above the tree.  A big piece came on the head of that goat so loud that in the blink of an eye his head broke off from the torso.
