Voodoo lily plants are known for their enormous flower size and unusual leaves. It is a perennial plant, usually grown as a curiosity for its interesting leaves. The flowers have a pungent, unpleasant odor, like rotting meat. This smell attracts flies, which pollinate the flowers.

The voodoo lily, also called the devil's tongue, is a member of the Amorphophallus genus. The voodoo lily, A. titanum, is the largest flower in the world. The flowers of A. konjac are small, but it is still quite large compared to other garden flowers. Each bulb produces a stalk, which is about 6 feet tall (2 meters), topped by a huge leaf. After the leaf stalk fades, the voodoo lily bulb produces a flower stalk. The flower is actually an arrangement of the spathe and spadex, similar to the calla lily. The spadex can grow from 10 to 50 inches (25.5 cm. to 1.27 m.) long. The flower lasts only a day or two.

Native to warm subtropical to tropical regions of East Asia from Vietnam, Japan and China to Indonesia, Amorphophallus konjac is known by several other scientific names, including A. rivieri, A. rivieri var. konjac, A. mairei and Hydrosme rivieri, as well as many common names such as devil's tongue, dragon plant, elephant yam, konyaku, leopard arum, snake palm and umbrella arum.

Its starchy tubers are edible and the plant is grown in some parts of the world for food, which can be used as a vegetarian alternative to gelatin. The Japanese use konjac flour to make shirataki noodles, and the starch is used to make a popular Asian fruit jelly snack. This plant of the Philodendron family (Araceae) produces a leaf from an underground tuber. The spherical tuber can grow up to 50 pounds and a foot in diameter. As the new leaf grows, the tuber shrinks and a new, larger tuber takes its place during the growing season. The fleshy leaf stalk (petiole) is a very interesting mottled pinkish-brown and olive green color.
