देशभर में हनुमान जी के कई सारे मंदिर हैं तथा बहुत जगह पर बहुत ऊंची ऊंची प्रतिमाएं भी बनी हुई हैं। आज हम बात करेंगे इलाहाबाद अर्थात प्रयागराज में बने हनुमान मंदिर की। इलाहाबाद किले से सटा भगवान हनुमान की प्राचीन मंदिर है, जिसमें हनुमान जी की लेटी हुई मुद्रा में 20 फीट लंबी मूर्ति स्थापित है।

वर्तमान में हनुमान जी के अनेक मंदिर हैं, जहां हनुमान जी को लेटा हुआ दर्शाया गया है, परंतु पुराणों में एक ही लेते हुए हनुमान जी के मंदिर का विवरण प्राप्त होता है और वह प्रयाग क्षेत्र के संगम तट पर स्थित इलाहाबाद के बड़े हनुमान जी का मंदिर है।

संगम नगरी प्रयागराज में इन्हें बड़े हनुमान जी, किले वाले हनुमान जी, लेटे हनुमान जी और बांध वाले हनुमान जी के नाम से जाना जाता है। यहां जमीन से नीचे हनुमान जी की मूर्ति लेटे हुए अवस्था में है तथा हनुमान जी अपनी एक भुजा से अहिरावण और दूसरी भुजा से दूसरे राक्षस को दबाए हुए अवस्था में है। यह एक मात्र मंदिर है, जिसमें हनुमान जी लेटी हुई मुद्रा में हैं।

यहां के बारे में ऐसा कहा जाता है कि लंका पर जीत हासिल करने के बाद जब हनुमानजी लौट रहे थे, तो रास्‍ते में उन्‍हें थकान महसूस होने लगी। तो सीता माता के कहने पर वह यहां संगम के तट पर लेट गए। इसी को ध्‍यान में रखते हुए यहां लेटे हनुमानजी का मंदिर बन गया। यह मंदिर कम से कम 600-700 वर्ष पुराना माना जाता है।

प्रचलित कथा के अनुसार कन्‍नौज के राजा को कोई संतान नहीं थी। उनके गुरु ने उपाय के रूप में बताया, ‘हनुमानजी की ऐसी प्रतिमा का निर्माण करवाइए जो राम लक्ष्‍मण को नाग पाश से छुड़ाने के लिए पाताल में गए थे। हनुमानजी का यह विग्रह विंध्‍याचल पर्वत से बनवाकर लाया जाना चाहिए।’ जब कन्‍नौज के राजा ने ऐसा ही किया और वह विंध्‍याचल से हनुमानजी की प्रतिमा नाव से लेकर आए। तभी अचानक से नाव टूट गई और यह प्रतिका जलमग्‍न हो गई। राजा को यह देखकर बेहद दुख हुआ और वह अपने राज्‍य वापस लौट गए। इस घटना के कई वर्षों बाद जब गंगा का जलस्‍तर घटा तो वहां धूनी जमाने का प्रयास कर रहे राम भक्‍त बाबा बालगिरी महाराज को यह प्रतिमा मिली। फिर उसके बाद वहां के राजा द्वारा मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया गया।

प्राचीन काल में मुगल शासकों के आदेश पर हिंदू मंदिरों को तोड़ने का क्रम जारी था। 1400 इसवी में जब भारत में औरंगजेब का शासन काल था, तब उसने इस प्रतिमा को यहां से हटाने की कोशिश की थी। इसके लिए उसने 100 सिपाहियों को लगाया था, लेकिन कई दिनों की मेहनत के बाद भी वो प्रतिमा को हिला नहीं पाए। जैसे-जैसे प्रतिमा को उठाने का प्रयास करते वह प्रतिमा वैसे-वैसे और अधिक धरती में बैठी जा रही थी। यही वजह है कि यह प्रतिमा धरातल से इतनी नीचे बनी है। यह धरातल से कम से कम 6-7 फीट नीचे है।

Adjacent to the Allahabad Fort is the ancient temple of Lord Hanuman, in which a 20 feet long statue of Hanuman ji is installed in a lying posture.

At present, there are many temples of Hanuman ji, where Hanuman ji is shown lying down, but in the Puranas, details of only one temple of Hanuman ji is found and that is Bade Hanuman ji of Allahabad situated on the banks of Sangam in Prayag area. There is a temple.

In Sangam city Prayagraj, he is known as Bade Hanuman ji, Fort Hanuman ji, Lete Hanuman ji and Dam wale Hanuman ji. Here the idol of Hanuman ji is lying below the ground and Hanuman ji is holding Ahiravana with one arm and another demon with the other arm. This is the only temple in which Hanuman ji is in a lying posture.

It is said about this place that when Hanumanji was returning after conquering Lanka, he started feeling tired on the way. So on the advice of Mother Sita, he lay down here on the banks of the Sangam. Keeping this in mind, a temple of Hanumanji lying here was built. This temple is considered to be at least 600-700 years old.

According to the popular story, the king of Kannauj had no children. His guru told as a solution, 'Get such a statue of Hanumanji made who had gone to the underworld to free Ram Lakshman from the snake noose. This idol of Hanumanji should be made and brought from Vindhyachal mountain.' When the king of Kannauj did the same and brought the idol of Hanumanji from Vindhyachal by boat. Then suddenly the boat broke and the statue got submerged. The king was very sad to see this and returned back to his kingdom. Many years after this incident, when the water level of Ganga decreased, Ram devotee Baba Balgiri Maharaj, who was trying to install Dhuni there, found this statue. Then after that the temple was constructed by the king there.

In ancient times, demolition of Hindu temples was going on on the orders of Mughal rulers. In 1400 AD, when Aurangzeb was ruling India, he tried to remove this statue from here. For this he had deployed 100 soldiers, but even after several days of hard work they could not move the statue. As people tried to lift the statue, it was sinking further into the earth. This is the reason why this statue is built so low from the ground. It is at least 6-7 feet below the ground.
