उत्तराखंड अपनी खूबसूरत वादियों के लिए विश्व भर में प्रसिद्ध है। उत्तर प्रदेश के 13 हिमालई जिलों को अलग कर 9 नवंबर 2000 को भारतीय गणतंत्र में 27वें राज्य और हिमालई राज्य में 11वें राज्य के रूप में उत्तराखंड का गठन हुआ। पहले इसका नाम उत्तरांचल था, फिर 1 जनवरी 2007 में इसका नाम बदलकर उत्तराखंड कर दिया गया। "मोनाल (Monal)" को उत्तराखंड राज्य गठन के बाद वर्ष 2000 में राज्य पक्षी का दर्जा दिया गया था। 

हर राज्य की तरह उत्तराखंड राज्य का भी अपना राजकीय पक्षी है। राजकीय पक्षियों के क्रम को आगे बढ़ाते हुए आज बात करते हैं उत्तराखंड के राजकीय पक्षी "मोनाल (Monal)" के बारे में। हिमालय के मयूर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध मोनाल उत्तराखंड का राजकीय पक्षी है। यह पक्षी लगभग संपूर्ण हिमालई क्षेत्र में 2500 से 5000 मीटर के ऊँचाई वाले घने जंगलों में पाए जाते हैं। 'मोनाल' और 'डफिया' एक ही प्रजाति के पक्षी हैं, लेकिन मोनाल मादा पक्षी है और डफिया नर पक्षी।

उत्तराखंड, कश्मीर, असम तथा नेपाल में स्थानीय भाषा में इस पक्षी को "मन्यार" या "मुनाल" के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। पश्चिमोत्तर हिमालय में मुनाल, घुर मुनाल, रतिया कावाँ, रतनल, रतकप, कश्मीर में सुनाल (नर सुनामुर्ग़ तथा मादा हाम), हिमाचल प्रदेश में नीलगुरु या मुनाल (नर नील तथा मादा करेरी), उत्तर प्रदेश में दतिया, मिश्मी भाषा में पिया पदिर या दाफ़े, लेपचा भाषा में फ़ो दौंग, नेपाल में डंगन, भूटान में बुप तथा सिक्किम में चामदौंग के नामों से जाना जाता है।

विभिन्न रंगों के मिश्रण से बनाया यह पक्षी बहुत ही खूबसूरत दिखता है। नीले, काले, हरे आदि रंगों वाले इस पक्षी की पूँछ हरी होती है। मोर की तरह इसके नर के सिर पर एक रंगीन कलगी होता है। यह पक्षी अपना घोंसला नहीं बनाते हैं, चट्टान और पेड़ के छिद्र में अंडे दे देते हैं। वनस्पति, कीड़े मकोड़े, आलू आदि मोनाल के प्रिय भोजन हैं। मोनाल आलू को बेहद शौक से खाते हैं, इसलिए आलू की फसल को यह बहुत नुकसान पहुंचाते हैं।

यह उत्तराखण्ड का राज्य पक्षी होने के साथ-साथ पड़ोसी देश नेपाल का राष्ट्रीय पक्षी भी है। मांस और खाल के लिए मोनाल का शिकार अधिक होता है जिसकी वजह से इनकी संख्या दिन प्रतिदिन घट रही है।

Uttarakhand is famous all over the world for its beautiful valleys. Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000 as the 27th state in the Republic of India and the 11th state in the Himalayan region by carving out 13 Himalayan districts of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier its name was Uttaranchal, then on January 1, 2007, its name was changed to Uttarakhand. "Monal" was given the status of state bird in the year 2000 after the formation of Uttarakhand state.

Like every state, the state of Uttarakhand also has its own state bird. Taking forward the sequence of state birds, today let's talk about the state bird of Uttarakhand "Monal". Monal, popularly known as the Peacock of the Himalayas, is the state bird of Uttarakhand. These birds are found in dense forests with an altitude of 2500 to 5000 meters in almost the entire Himalayan region. 'Monal' and 'Daphia' are birds of the same species, but Monal is a female bird and Daphia is a male bird.

In Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Assam and Nepal, this bird is also known as "Manyar" or "Munal" in the local language. Munal, Ghur Munal, Ratia Kawan, Ratnal, Ratkap in North-Western Himalayas, Sunal (male Sunamurgh and female Ham) in Kashmir, Nilguru or Munal (male Neel and female Kareri) in Himachal Pradesh, Datia in Uttar Pradesh, Piya Padir in Mishmi language Or Dafe, known as Pho Doung in Lepcha language, Dangan in Nepal, Bup in Bhutan and Chamdong in Sikkim.

This bird made by mixing different colors looks very beautiful. The tail of this bird with colors like blue, black, green etc. is green. Like a peacock, its male has a colorful crest on its head. These birds do not make their nests, they lay eggs in holes in rocks and trees. Vegetables, insects, potatoes etc. are Monal's favorite food. Monal eats potatoes very fondly, so it causes a lot of damage to the potato crop.

Apart from being the state bird of Uttarakhand, it is also the national bird of the neighboring country Nepal. Monal's hunting is more for meat and skin, due to which their number is decreasing day by day.
