लालच बुरी बला है

एक शहर में एक आदमी रहता था। वह बहुत ही लालची था। उसने सुन रखा था की अगर संतो और साधुओं की सेवा करे तो बहुत ज्यादा धन प्राप्त होता है। यह सोच कर उसने साधू-संतो की सेवा करनी प्रारम्भ कर दी। एक बार उसके घर बड़े ही चमत्कारी संत आये।

उन्होंने उसकी सेवा से प्रसन्न होकर उसे चार दीये दिए और कहा - "इनमें से एक दीया जला लेना और पूरब दिशा की ओर चले जाना। जहाँ यह दीया बुझ जाये, वहाँ की जमीन को खोद लेना, वहाँ तुम्हें काफी धन मिल जायेगा। अगर फिर तुम्हें धन की आवश्यकता पड़े, तो दूसरा दीया जला लेना और पक्षिम दिशा की ओर चले जाना, जहाँ यह दीया बुझ जाये, वहाँ की जमीन खोद लेना तुम्हें मन चाही माया मिलेगी। फिर भी संतुष्टि ना हो तो तीसरा दीया जला लेना और दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चले जाना। उसी प्रकार दीया बुझने पर जब तुम वहाँ की जमीन खोदोगे तो तुम्हें बेअन्त धन मिलेगा। फिर तुम्हारे पास केवल एक दीया बच जायेगा और एक ही दिशा रह जायेगी। तुमने यह दीया ना ही जलाना है और ना ही इसे उत्तर दिशा की ओर ले जाना है।"

यह कह कर संत चले गए। लालची आदमी उसी वक्त पहला दीया जला कर पूरब दिशा की ओर चला गया। दूर जंगल में जाकर दीया बुझ गया। उस आदमी ने उस जगह को खोदा तो उसे पैसों से भरी एक गागर मिली। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने सोचा की इस गागर को फिलहाल यही रहने देता हूँ, फिर कभी ले जाऊंगा। पहले मुझे जल्दी ही पक्षिम दिशा वाला धन देख लेना चाहिए। यह सोच कर उसने दुसरे दिन दूसरा दीया जलाया और पक्षिम दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दूर एक उजाड़ स्थान में जाकर दीया बुझ गया। वहाँ उस आदमी ने जब जमीन खोदी तो उसे सोने की मोहरों से भरा एक घड़ा मिला। उसने घड़े को भी यही सोचकर वहीं रहने दिया की पहले दक्षिण दिशा में जाकर देख लेना चाहिए। जल्दी से जल्दी ज्यादा से ज्यादा धन प्राप्त करने के लिए वह बेचैन हो गया। अगले दिन वह दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दीया एक मैदान में जाकर बुझ गया। उसने वहाँ की जमीन खोदी तो उसे हीरे-मोतियों से भरी दो पेटियाँ मिली। वह आदमी अब बहुत खुश था।

तब वह सोचने लगा अगर इन तीनो दिशाओ में इतना धन पड़ा है, तो चौथी दिशा में इनसे भी ज्यादा धन होगा। फिर उसके मन में ख्याल आया की संत ने उसे चौथी दिशा की ओर जाने के लिए मना किया है। दुसरे ही पल उसके मन ने कहा - "हो सकता है उत्तर दिशा की दौलत संत अपने लिए रखना चाहते हो। मुझे जल्दी से जल्दी उस पर भी कब्ज़ा कर लेना चाहिए।" ज्यादा से ज्यादा धन प्राप्त करने की लालच ने उसे संतो के वचनों को दुबारा सोंचने ही नहीं दिया।

अगले दिन उसने चौथा दीया जलाया और जल्दी-जल्दी उत्तर दिशा की ओर चल पड़ा। दूर आगे एक महल के पास जाकर दीया बुझ गया। महल का दरवाज़ा बंद था। उसने दरवाज़े को धकेला तो दरवाज़ा खुल गया। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने मन ही मन में सोचा की यह महल उसके लिए ही है। वह अब तीनो दिशाओ की दौलत को भी यहीं ले आकर रखेगा और ऐश करेगा। वह आदमी महल के एक-एक कमरे में गया। कोई कमरा हीरे मोतियों से भरा हुआ था। किसी कमरे में सोने के किमती से किमती आभूषण भरे पड़े थे। इसी प्रकार अन्य कमरे भी बेअन्त धन से भरे हुए थे। वह आदमी चकाचौंध होता जाता और अपने भाग्य को शाबासी देता। वह जरा और आगे बढ़ा तो उसे एक कमरे में चक्की चलने की आवाज़ सुनाई दी। वह उस कमरे में दाखिल हुआ तो उसने देखा की एक बूढ़ा आदमी चक्की चला रहा है। लालची आदमी ने बूढ़े से कहा की तू यहाँ कैसे पंहुचा? बूढ़े ने कहा - "ऐसा कर यह जरा चक्की चला, मैं सांस लेकर तुझे बताता हूँ।"

लालची आदमी ने चक्की चलानी प्रारम्भ कर दी। बूढ़ा चक्की से हट जाने पर ऊँची-ऊँची हँसने लगा। लालची आदमी उसकी ओर हैरानी से देखने लगा। वह चक्की बंद ही करने लगा था की बूढ़े ने खबरदार करते हुए कहा - "ना ना चक्की चलानी बंद ना कर।" फिर बूढ़े ने कहा - "यह महल अब तेरा है। परन्तु यह उतनी देर तक खड़ा रहेगा जितनी देर तक तू चक्की चलाता रहेगा। अगर चक्की चलनी बंद हो गयी तो महल गिर जायेगा और तू भी इसके निचे दब कर मर जायेगा।"

कुछ समय रुक कर बूढ़ा फिर कहने लगा - "मैंने भी तेरी ही तरह लालच करके संतो की बात नहीं मानी थी और मेरी सारी जवानी इस चक्की को चलाते हुए बीत गयी।"

वह लालची आदमी बूढ़े की बात सुन कर रोने लग पड़ा। फिर कहने लगा -"अब मेरा इस चक्की से छुटकारा कैसे होगा?"

बूढ़े ने कहा - "जब तक मेरे और तेरे जैसा कोई आदमी लालच में अंधा होकर यहाँ नहीं आयेगा, तब तक तू इस चक्की से छुटकारा नहीं पा सकेगा।" तब उस लालची आदमी ने बूढ़े से आखरी सवाल पूछा - "तू अब बाहर जाकर क्या करेगा?"

बूढ़े ने कहा - "मैं सब लोगो से ऊँची-ऊँची चिल्ला चिल्ला कर कहूँगा, लालच बुरी बला है।"

Greed is Evil

A man lived in a city. He was very greedy. He had heard that if he serves saints and sages, he will get a lot of money. Thinking this, he started serving the sages and saints. Once a very miraculous saint came to his house.

Pleased with his service, he gave him four lamps and said - "Light one of these lamps and go towards the east. Where this lamp goes out, dig the ground there, you will get a lot of money. If then If you need money, then light another lamp and go towards west direction, dig the ground where this lamp is extinguished, you will get desired illusion. Go away. In the same way, when the lamp is extinguished, when you dig the land there, you will get infinite money. Then only one lamp will be left with you and only one direction will be left. You should neither light this lamp nor keep it in the north direction. To be taken away."

Saying this the saint went away. The greedy man lit the first lamp at the same time and went towards the east. The lamp got extinguished after going far away in the forest. When the man dug that place, he found a jug full of money. He was very happy. He thought that he will let this Gagar stay here for the time being, will take him some other time. First I should see the west direction money soon. Thinking of this, he lit another lamp the next day and went towards the west. The lamp got extinguished after going to a desolate place far away. There, when the man dug the ground, he found a pot full of gold coins. He also left the pitcher there thinking that first he should go to the south and see. He became restless to get more and more money as soon as possible. The next day he started towards the south. The lamp got extinguished after going to a field. When he dug the land there, he found two boxes full of diamonds and pearls. The man was very happy now.

Then he started thinking that if there is so much money lying in these three directions, then there will be more money in the fourth direction. Then he thought that the saint had forbidden him to go towards the fourth direction. The next moment his mind said - "Maybe the saints want to keep the wealth of the north for themselves. I should take possession of that too as soon as possible." The greed of getting more and more money did not allow him to think twice about the words of saints.

The next day he lit the fourth lamp and hurriedly started towards the north. The lamp got extinguished after going to a palace far ahead. The palace door was closed. When he pushed the door, the door opened. He was very happy. He thought in his mind that this palace is for him only. Now he will bring the wealth of all the three directions and keep it here and enjoy it. The man went to each and every room of the palace. Some room was full of diamonds and pearls. In some room precious ornaments were lying full of gold. Similarly other rooms were also filled with infinite wealth. The man used to get dazzled and brag to his luck. When he went a little further, he heard the sound of a mill running in a room. When he entered that room, he saw an old man running a mill. The greedy man said to the old man how did you reach here? The old man said - "By doing this, let this mill run a little, I will tell you by taking a breath."

The greedy man started running the mill. The old man started laughing out loud when he left the mill. The greedy man looked at him with astonishment. He was about to close the mill when the old man cautioned and said - "No, don't stop running the mill." Then the old man said - "This palace is yours now. But it will stand as long as you keep running the mill. If the mill stops running, the palace will collapse and you too will die under it."

After stopping for some time, the old man again said - "Like you, I also did not listen to saints out of greed and spent my whole youth running this mill."

That greedy man started crying after listening to the old man. Then he said - "Now how will I get rid of this mill?"

The old man said - "Unless a man like me and you comes here blinded by greed, you will not be able to get rid of this mill." Then that greedy man asked the old man the last question - "What will you do after going out now?"

The old man said - "I will shout loudly to all the people that greed is a bad thing."
