Dendrophylax Lindenii
Who doesn't like a smiling flower and a smiling face? The beauty and fragrance of flowers attract everyone towards them. There are many such flowers in this world which have their own individuality. Let's meet another flower from the strange world of flowers, whose name is "Dendrophylax lindeni".
A flower named "Dendrophylax lindenii" is found in the forests of Cuba and Florida. It is also called ghost orchid or ghost orchid. This flower was declared extinct about 20 years ago. Leaves are not found in it. Its roots nourish the flowers by photosynthesis. Only a butterfly named Giant Sphinx can pollinate this flower.
This orchid is unusual in that it has a very short stem. The flat cord-like green roots make up the majority of the mature plant. They bear the distinctive white "track marks", for which the technical term is pneumatodes. These nematodes are thought to act partly like stomata, enabling photosynthetic roots to carry out the gas exchange necessary for respiration and photosynthesis. The chloroplasts in these flattened roots do almost all of the plant's photosynthesis.
This orchid is found in moist, swampy forests in southwestern Florida and on Caribbean islands such as Cuba. Dendrophylax lindenii blooms between June and August. This orchid bears one to ten fragrant flowers, which open one at a time. The flowers are white, 3–4 cm wide and 7–9 cm long. They are borne on spikes arising from the root network. Their most intense fragrance is in the morning. This orchid has a fragrant fruit, which is similar to an apple. The lower petal, the labellum, has two long, lateral tendrils that turn slightly downward, similar to the hind legs of a jumping frog. Its sections are scary - thin and papery. The roots of this orchid are so well hidden on the tree that the flower can appear to float in the air, hence the name "ghost orchid".
