मच्छर एक बहुत ही हानिकारक कीट है, जो संसार के लगभग सभी भागों में पाया जाता है। यह विभिन्न प्रकार के रोगों को फैलाता है। किसी अन्य जीव जंतु की तुलना में दुनिया में सबसे ज्यादा मौतें इस कीट के कारण होती हैं। यहां तक कि इतिहास में युद्ध से हुई मौतों की तुलना में भी मच्छरों के काटने से हुई मौत से कई गुना अधिक है। यही वजह है कि मच्छरों को शेर या सांप जैसे जानवरों से भी अधिक खतरनाक माना गया है। तो चलिए जानते हैं आज इस मच्छर के विषय में।

1. मच्छर (Mosquito), छोटी मक्खी के लिए उपयोग में लाए जाने वाला एक स्पेनिश शब्द है। यह शब्द 16वीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभ में अस्तित्व में आया था।
2. अफ्रीका न्यूजीलैंड और ऑस्ट्रेलिया में मच्छरों को मोजिज (Mozzies) कहा जाता है।
3. लोगों को नर मच्छर कभी नहीं काटता है, बल्कि हमेशा मादा मच्छर ही काटती है। ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि मादा मच्छरों को अपने अंडों के विकास के लिए प्रोटीन की आवश्यकता होती है और वह इस जरूरत को इंसानों के खून से पूरा करती हैं। 
4. नर मच्छर पर पौधों का रस चूसते हैं।
5. नर मच्छर शाकाहारी होते हैं।
6. मच्छरों की संख्या का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि पृथ्वी के सभी मच्छरों को मारकर यदि किसी मैदान में इकट्ठा कर लिया जाए, तो 5 किलो मीटर ऊंचा ढेर लग जाएगा।
7. मादा मच्छर एक बार में लगभग 300 अंडे देती हैं।
8. अपने पूरे जीवन काल में मादा मच्छर तीन बार तक अंडे दे सकती है। 
9. एक मच्छर की आयु 2 महीने से कम होती है। नर मच्छर 10 दिनों तक और मादा मच्छर 6 से 8 हफ्ते तक जिंदा रहती हैं।
