माता थावेवाली का मंदिर बिहार राज्य के गोपालगंज जिले के थावे में स्थित है। यह गोपालगंज-सिवान राष्ट्रीय मार्ग पर गोपालगंज जिले से 6 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यहां देवी दुर्गा के ही एक रूप माता थावेवाली की एक प्राचीन मंदिर है। माता थावेवाली को भक्तगण सुहासिनी भवानी, थावे भवानी और रहषू भवानी के नाम से भी जानते हैं।

गोपालगंज के सुप्रसिद्ध थावे का दुर्गा मंदिर दो तरफ जंगलों से घिरा है और इस मंदिर का गर्भगृह काफी पुराना है।

इस मंदिर के पीछे मान्यता यह है कि देवी दुर्गा कामाख्या से चलकर कोलकाता और पटना के रास्ते यहां पहुंची थीं।यह मंदिर देश के 52 शक्तिपीठों में से एक है।इस मंदिर के पीछे एक प्राचीन किंतु रोचक कहानी है। इस मंदिर में नेपाल, उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार के कई जिलों से श्रद्धालु पूजा-अर्चना करने आते हैं। वैसे तो यहां साल भर भक्तों का आना जाना लगा रहता है, लेकिन चैत्र और शारदीय नवरात्र में पूजा करने का विशेष महत्व है। नवरात्रि के 9 दिन यहां विशेष पूजा अर्चना की जाती है, और यहां खास मेला भी लगता है।इसके अलावा सोमवार और शुक्रवार को भी इस मंदिर में विशेष पूजा की जाती है। यहां मां के भक्त प्रसाद के रूप में नारियल, पेड़ा और चुनरी चढ़ाते हैं। ज्यादा महंगा चढ़ावा यहां नहीं चढ़ाया जाता।इस मंदिर के पीछे एक प्राचीन किंतु रोचक कहानी है।

थावे दुर्गा मंदिर की कहानी

जनश्रुतियों के मुताबिक एक समय हथुआ के राजा मनन सिंह हुआ करते थे। वह स्वयं को मां दुर्गा का सबसे बड़ा भक्त मानते थे। थावे में एक रहषू भगत रहते थे जो कामाख्या देवी के परम भक्त थे। वह दिन में जंगल से कतरा काटकर लाते थे और रात में सात सिंह(बाघ) उनके साथ दौनी करते थे, जिससे गेहूं, चावल निकलता था और उनके परिवार का भरण पोषण होता था। यह बात राजा तक पहुंची,उन्होंने रहषू भगत से पूछा कि कैसे तुम बाघ के साथ दौनी करते हो ? रहषू भगत बोले, देवी की कृपा से सब काम हो जाता हैै।लेकिन राजा को विश्वास नहीं हुआ। राजा ने रहषू भगत से कहा कि तुम्हारी देवी को मैं भी देखना चाहता हूं, उन्हें यहां बुलाओ। रहषू भगत ने राजा से बहुत प्रार्थना की कि- "इस प्रकार की जिद ना करें, अगर देवी मां यहां आएंगी तो सब कुछ आपका नष्ट हो जाएगा, और हमारा भी," लेकिन राजा नहीं माने । रहषू भगत के आवाह्न पर देवी मां कामाख्या से चलकर कोलकाता, विंध्याचल, पटना (पटन देवी के नाम से जानते हैं),आमी और घोड़ा घाट तक आयीं।जहां-जहां भगवती का स्थान पड़ा वहां वहां रहषू भगत ने राजा को सचेत करने की कोशिश की कि वे अभी भी अपनी जिद छोड़ दें, लेकिन राजा नहीं मानें। तब देवी दुर्गा गोपालगंज के थावे पहुंची और तप करते हुए रहषू भगत के सिर के बीच से अपना कंगन सहित एक हाथ निकाल कर साक्षात दर्शन दीं। इस प्रकार रहषू भगत मोक्ष को प्राप्त हुए और राजा का साम्राज्य बर्बाद हो गया।

एक अन्य मान्यता के अनुसार, हथुआ के राजा युवराज साहिब बहादुर ने वर्ष 1714 में थावे दुर्गा मंदिर की स्थापना उस समय की जब वे चंपारण के जमींदार  काबुल मोहम्मद बड़हरिया से दसवीं बार लड़ाई हारने के बाद फौज सहित हथुआ वापस लौट रहे थे। इसी दौरान थावे जंगल में एक विशाल वृक्ष के नीचे पड़ाव डाल कर विश्राम करने के समय अचानक स्वप्न में मां दुर्गा दिखीं। स्वप्न में आए तथ्यों के अनुरूप राजा ने काबुल मोहम्मद बड़हरिया पर आक्रमण कर विजय हासिल की और कल्याणपुर, हुसेपुर सेलारी, बेलारी, तुरकहां और भुरकाहा को अपने राज्य के अधीन कर लिया। विजय हासिल करने के पश्चात उस वृक्ष के चार कदम उत्तर दिशा में राजा ने खुदाई कराई, जहां 10 फुट नीचे वन दुर्गा की प्रतिमा मिली और वही मंदिर की स्थापना की गई।

मंदिर की तरफ जाते समय पहले हथुआ का राजमहल मिलता है, जो पूरी तरह से जर्जर अवस्था में है फिर मां दुर्गा का मंदिर है, और दुर्गा मां मंदिर के समीप ही रहषू भगत का मंदिर है जिसके सामने सात सिंह (बाघ) की भी मूर्ति है।

मंदिर के बाड़े के मध्य एक विशाल वृक्ष है, जिसका वानस्पतिक परिवार अभी भी पहचाना नहीं गया है।

Thave Ka Durga Temple

The temple of Mata Thavewali is located in Thawe of Gopalganj district of Bihar state. It is situated at a distance of 6 kms from Gopalganj district on Gopalganj-Siwan national road. Here is an ancient temple of Mata Thavewali, a form of Goddess Durga. Mata Thavewali is also known by the devotees as Suhasini Bhavani, Thave Bhavani and Rashu Bhavani.

The Durga temple of the famous Thave of Gopalganj is surrounded by forests on two sides and the sanctum sanctorum of this temple is quite old.

The belief behind this temple is that Goddess Durga had reached here from Kamakhya via Kolkata and Patna. This temple is one of the 52 Shaktipeeths of the country. There is an ancient but interesting story behind this temple. Devotees from many districts of Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar come to this temple to offer prayers. Although devotees keep visiting here throughout the year, but worshiping in Chaitra and Shardiya Navratri has special significance. Special worship is performed here on the 9 days of Navratri, and a special fair is also held here. Apart from this, special worship is also done in this temple on Mondays and Fridays. Here the devotees of the mother offer coconut, peda and chunri as prasad. More expensive offerings are not offered here. There is an ancient but interesting story behind this temple.

Story of Thave Durga Temple

According to the legends, at one time there used to be Manan Singh, the king of Hathua. He considered himself the biggest devotee of Maa Durga. There lived a Rahashu Bhagat in Thave who was a great devotee of Kamakhya Devi. During the day, he used to bring shreds from the forest and at night seven lions (tigers) used to carry rosemary with him, which produced wheat, rice and fed his family. This matter reached the king, he asked Rahashu Bhagat that how do you do rosemary with the tiger? Rahashu Bhagat said, by the grace of the goddess everything gets done. But the king did not believe. The king told Rahashu Bhagat that I also want to see your goddess, call her here. Rahashu Bhagat prayed a lot to the king that- "Don't insist like this, if Mother Goddess comes here then everything will be destroyed for you, and ours too," but the king did not agree. On the call of Rashu Bhagat, Devi Maa came from Kamakhya to Kolkata, Vindhyachal, Patna (known as Patan Devi), Aami and Ghoda Ghat. That they still give up their insistence, but do not obey the king. Then Goddess Durga reached the thawe of Gopalganj and while doing penance, took out her bracelet from the middle of the head of Rashu Bhagat and gave a direct darshan. Thus Rahashu Bhagat attained salvation and the king's empire was ruined.

According to another belief, King Yuvraj Sahib Bahadur of Hathua established the Thawe Durga temple in the year 1714 when he was returning to Hathua with his army after losing the battle for the tenth time to the Zamindar of Champaran, Kabul Mohammad Barharia. Meanwhile, while resting under a huge tree in the Thave forest, suddenly Mother Durga appeared in a dream. According to the facts in the dream, the king conquered Kabul by attacking Mohammad Badhariya and took Kalyanpur, Hussepur Sellari, Bellary, Turkahan and Bhurkaha under his kingdom. After winning the victory, the king excavated that tree four steps to the north, where the idol of Van Durga was found 10 feet below and the same temple was established.

While going towards the temple, first the palace of Hathua is found, which is in a completely dilapidated state, then there is a temple of Maa Durga, and near the Durga Maa temple is the temple of Rahashu Bhagat, in front of which there is also a statue of seven lions (tigers). .

There is a huge tree in the center of the temple enclosure, whose botanical family is still not recognized.
