तेनालीराम जब बड़े हुए, तो उनकी बुद्धिमानी के चर्चे पूरे गाँव में होने लगे। गाँव में जब भी कोई किसी समस्या में पड़ता, तो तेनालीराम के पास उसके समाधान हेतु चला आता। तेनालीराम भी अपनी बुद्धिमत्ता के बल पर चुटकी बजाते ही समस्या का समाधान कर देते।

तेनालीराम बुद्धिमान तो थे ही, साथ ही एक श्रेष्ठ कवि भी थे। उनकी वाकपटुता का तो कोई सानी ही नहीं था।गाँववाले अक्सर उनसे कहा करते कि उन्हें महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार की शोभा बढ़ानी चाहिए। तब तक तेनालीराम का विवाह "शारदा" नामक कन्या से हो चुका था। अपने परिवार के उज्जवल भविष्य की कामना में तेनालीराम के मन में भी महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार में जाने की आकांक्षा बलवती होने लगी, किंतु उन्हें ज्ञात नहीं था कि किस तरह वे महाराज के दरबार तक पहुँचे?

संयोग से एक दिन महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार के राजगुरु तेनालीराम के गाँव पधारे। तेनालीराम को जब ये ज्ञात हुआ, तो वह भागे-भागे राजगुरू के पास पहुँचे और उन्हें अपने घर भोज पर आमंत्रित कर लिया। राजगुरू जब तेनालीराम के घर आये, तो तेनालीराम और उनकी पत्नि ने उनका बहुत आदर-सत्कार किया। उनकी बहुत सेवा-सुश्रुषा की। तेनालीराम ने उन्हें अपनी कवितायें सुनाई और अपनी वाकपटुता से उनका मनोरंजन भी किया।उन्हें पूर्ण आशा थी कि उनकी सेवा और कला से प्रसन्न होकर राजगुरू अवश्य महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार तक पहुँचने में उनकी सहायता करेंगे। 

राजगुरू ने गाँव से प्रस्थान करने के पूर्व तेनालीराम को आश्वासन दिया कि वह नगर पहुँचते ही महाराज से उनकी सिफ़ारिश करेंगे और इस संबंध में उन्हें शीघ्र ही संदेश भेजेंगे तेनालीराम प्रसन्न हो गये और उसके बाद से प्रतिदिन राजगुरू के संदेश की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। लेकिन राजगुरू का संदेश न आना था, न ही आया। वास्तव में राजगुरू तेनालीराम की बुद्धिमानी देखकर भयभीत हो गए थे। उन्हें भय था कि यदि तेनालीराम राजदरबार में आ गए, तो उनकी स्वयं की प्रतिष्ठा कम हो जायेगी। इसलिए उन्होंने तय कर लिया था कि वे तेनालीराम के संबंध में महाराजा कृष्णदेव राय से तो क्या किसी भी अन्य राज दरबारी से चर्चा नहीं करेंगे।

इधर दिन गुजरते जा रहे थे और तेनालीराम का धैर्य टूटता जा रहा था। गाँव के लोग भी उन्हें चिढ़ाने लगे थे। अंत में तेनालीराम ने निश्चय किया कि अब वे राजगुरू के संदेश के भरोसे नहीं रहेंगे और स्वयं राजगुरु से मिलने नगर जायेंगे। उन्होंने अपनी पत्नि को सामान बांधने को कहा और अगले ही दिन परिवार सहित विजयनगर की राह पकड़ ली। विजय नगर पहुँचकर अपने परिवार को एक धर्मशाला में ठहराकर वे राजगुरू से मिलने निकल गये। उनका पता पूछकर जब वे उनके निवास पर पहुँचे, तो देखा कि वहाँ लोगों की लंबी कतार लगी हुई है।

तेनालीराम भी कतार में लग गये। उन्हें पूर्ण विश्वास था कि राजगुरू उन्हें देखते ही पहचान लेंगे और उनका स्वागत करेंगे। किंतु जब वे राजगुरू के समक्ष पहुँचे, तो राजगुरू ने उन्हें नहीं पहचानने का ढोंग किया।तेनालीराम ने उन्हें अपना परिचय देते हुए उन्हें अपनी पिछली मुलाकात स्मरण करवाने का प्रयास किया, किंतु राजगुरू ने सेवकों से कहकर उन्हें अपने घर से बाहर निकलवा दिया। तेनालीराम अपने इस अपमान से बहुत दु:खी हुए। उन्होंने तय कर लिया कि चाहे कुछ भी हो जाये, वे महाराज से मिलकर ही रहेंगे और राजगुरू से भी अपने अपमान का बदला लेंगे।

अगले दिन किसी तरह वह पहरेदारों को बहला-फ़ुसलाकर राजदरबार में पहुँच गए। वहाँ जीवन के वैराग्य और सत्य-असत्य पर ज्ञानियों और पंडितों की गहन चर्चा चल रही थी। राजगुरू भी उस चर्चा में सम्मिलित थे।राजगुरू कह रहे थे, "ये संसार मिथ्या है, जो भी यहाँ घटित हो रहा है, सब एक दिवास्वप्न है। ये मन का भ्रम है कि कुछ हो रहा है। यदि जो घटित हो रहा है, हम उसमें सम्मिलित न भी हों, हम वह न भी करें, तो कोई अंतर नहीं पड़ेगा।"

यह सुनना था कि तेनालीराम बोल पड़े, "राजगुरू जी! क्या सचमुच सब कार्य भ्रम है?" तेनालीराम को राजदरबार में देखकर राजगुरू चकित हो गये। उनके मन में आवेश का ज्वार उठ खड़ा हुआ। वे उसी क्षण द्वारपालों से कहकर तेनालीराम को दरबार से बाहर फिकवा देना चाहते थे, किंतु महाराज के समक्ष वे ऐसा नहीं कर सकते थे।इसलिए स्वयं के आवेश पर नियंत्रण रखते हुए वे मृदु स्वर में बोले, "ये सत्य है कि समग्र कार्य भ्रम है। चाहे कुछ किया जाए या न किया जाए, कोई अंतर नहीं पड़ता।"

तेनालीराम मुस्कुराते हुए बोला- "यदि ऐसी बात है, तो राजगुरू आज दोपहर महाराज के साथ हम सब मिलकर भोजन करेंगे और आप दूर बैठकर देखना और सोचना कि आपने भोजन ग्रहण कर लिया। अब से प्रतिदिन ही ऐसा करना। क्योंकि कुछ किया जाये या न किया जाए, कोई अंतर तो पड़ता ही नहीं है।" 

ये सुनना था कि महाराज और सारे दरबारी हँस पड़े। राजगुरू का सिर लज्जा से झुक गया। महाराज कृष्णदेव राय तेनालीराम के तर्क से बहुत प्रभावित हुए थे। उन्होंने उनका परिचय पूछा। तेनालीराम ने अपना परिचय देते हुए गाँव में राजगुरू से मिलने और गाँव से राजदरबार पहुँचने का वृतांत सुना दिया। पूरा वृतांत सुनकर महाराज राजगुरू पर बहुत क्रोधित हुए।

महाराज तेनालीराम की वाकपटुता और बुद्धिमानी से अति-प्रसन्न थे. उन्होंने उन्हें राज्य का मुख्य-सलाहकार बना दिया और इस तरह तेनालीराम महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के "अष्ट-दिग्गजस" का अभिन्न अंग बन गए।

 English Translate

Tenali Raman aur Rajguru

When Tenaliram grew up, his wisdom started being discussed in the whole village. Whenever anyone in the village fell into any problem, he would come to Tenaliram for his solution. Tenaliram would also solve the problem as soon as he took a pinch on the strength of his intelligence.

Tenaliram was not only intelligent, but also a great poet and his eloquence had no match. The villagers often told him that he should beautify the court of Maharaja Krishna Deva Raya.

By then Tenaliram was married to a girl named "Sharda". In wishing for the bright future of his family, Tenaliram's desire to go to the court of Maharaja Krishna Deva Raya started growing strong in his mind. But they did not know how they reached the court of Maharaj.

Coincidentally, one day Maharaj came to the village of Tenaliram, the Rajguru of the court of Krishna Deva Raya. When Tenaliram came to know about this, he ran to the Rajguru and invited him to his house for a banquet.

When Rajguru came to Tenaliram's house, Tenaliram and his wife gave him a lot of respect and service to him. Tenaliram recited his poems to him and entertained him with his eloquence. He had full hope that Rajguru would surely help him to reach the court of Maharaja Krishnadev Raya, pleased with his service and art.

Before leaving the village, Rajguru assured Tenaliram that he would recommend him to Maharaj as soon as he reached the city and would send him a message in this regard soon. Tenaliram was pleased and from then onwards started waiting for Rajguru's message every day.

But Rajguru's message did not come, nor did it come. In fact, Rajguru was horrified to see Tenaliram's wisdom. He was afraid that if Tenaliram came to the court, his own prestige would be reduced. That's why he had decided that he would not discuss Tenaliram with Maharaja Krishnadev Raya or with any other royal courtier.

Days were passing by and Tenaliram's patience was getting worse. The people of the village also started teasing him. In the end Tenaliram decided that he would no longer rely on Rajguru's message and would himself go to the city to meet him.

He asked his wife to pack his belongings and the very next day he took his way to Vijayanagar with his family. After reaching Vijay Nagar, staying with his family in a dharamsala, he went out to meet Rajguru. When he reached his residence after asking his address, he saw that there was a long queue of people there.

Tenaliram also joined the queue. He had full faith that Rajguru would recognize him and welcome him on seeing him. But when he reached before Rajguru, Rajguru pretended not to recognize him. While introducing himself, Tenaliram tried to remind him of his previous meeting, but Rajguru asked the servants to get him out of his house.

Tenaliram was deeply saddened by his humiliation. He decided that no matter what happens, he will stay with the Maharaj and will also take revenge for his insult from Rajguru.

The next day, somehow he reached the court by luring the guards. There was an intense discussion of the wise and the pundits on the dispassion of life and the truth and untruth. Rajguru was also involved in that discussion.

Rajguru was saying, “This world is false. Whatever is happening here is a daydream. It is an illusion of the mind that something is happening. Even if we don't participate in what is happening, even if we don't do it, it won't make any difference."

It was to be heard that Tenaliram said, "Rajguruji, is all work really an illusion?"

Rajguru was astonished to see Tenaliram in the court. A tide of passion rose in his mind. At that very moment he wanted to throw Tenaliram out of the court by asking the gatekeepers. But he could not do this in front of Maharaj. Therefore, keeping control of his own passion, he said in a soft voice, “It is true that all work is an illusion. Whether something is done or not, it doesn't matter."

 “If that is the case, then we will all have dinner together with Rajguru Maharaj this afternoon and you sit away and watch and think that you have had your meal. Do this every day from now on. Because whether something is done or not, it doesn't make any difference. Tenaliram said with a smile.

It was to be heard that the Maharaj and all the courtiers laughed. Rajguru's head bowed in shame.

Maharaja Krishnadeva Raya was greatly influenced by Tenaliram's logic. He asked for his introduction. Introducing himself, Tenaliram narrated the story of meeting Rajguru in the village and reaching the royal court from the village. Hearing the whole story, Maharaj became very angry with Rajguru.

Maharaj was very pleased with Tenaliram's eloquence and intelligence. He made him the chief-advisor of the state and thus Tenalirama Maharaja became an integral part of Krishnadeva Raya's 'Ashta-diggajas'.
