शिल्पी की अद्भुत माँग

एक बार महाराज कृष्णदेव पड़ोस के राज्य पर जीत हासिल करके विजयनगर लौटे और उन्होंने उत्सव मनाने की घोषणा कर दी। पूरे नगर को ऐसे सजाया गया जैसे कोई बड़ा त्योहार हो।अपनी इस जीत को यादगार बनाने के लिए महाराज कृष्णदेव के मन में विचार आया कि क्यों न नगर में विजय स्तंभ बनवाया जाए। स्तंभ बनाने के लिए महाराज ने राज्य के सबसे हुनरमंद शिल्पकार को तुरंत बुलवाया और उसे काम सौंप दिया।

महाराज के आदेशानुसार शिल्पी भी अपने काम में जुट गया और कई हफ्तों तक दिन-रात एक करके उसने विजय स्तंभ का काम पूरा किया। जैसे ही विजय स्तंभ बनकर तैयार हुआ, तो महाराज समेत दरबारी व नगरवासी शिल्पकार की कला को देखकर उसके कायल हो गए। शिल्पी की कारीगरी से प्रसन्न होकर महाराज ने उसे दरबार में बुलाया और इनाम मांगने को कहा। उनकी बात सुनकर शिल्पकार ने कहा, "हे महाराज, आपको मेरा काम पसंद आया, मेरे लिए यही सबसे बड़ा इनाम है। आप बस अपनी कृपा मुझ पर बनाए रखिएगा।" शिल्पकार का जवाब सुनकर महाराज को खुशी हुई, लेकिन उन्होंने फिर भी सोचा कि वह शिल्पी को कोई-न-कोई इनाम जरूर देंगे। महाराज ने शिल्पी को कहा कि उसे कोई-न-कोई इनाम मांगना ही होगा। 

महाराज की इच्छा को जानने के बाद दरबार में मौजूद अन्य दरबारी शिल्पकार से कहने लगे कि महाराज खुले मन से तुम्हें कुछ देना चाह रहे हैं। तुम जल्दी से मांग लो। शिल्पकार अपनी कला में माहिर होने के साथ ही स्वाभिमानी और बुद्धिमान भी था। शिल्पी को लगा कि अगर वह कुछ नहीं मांगता, तो महाराज नाराज हो सकते हैं। अगर वह कुछ लेता है, तो वह उसके स्वाभिमान और उसूलों के खिलाफ होगा।

ऐसे में कुछ देर सोचने के बाद शिल्पकार ने साथ लाए अपने औजारों का झोला खाली किया और खाली झोले को महाराज की तरफ बढ़ाते हुए कहा कि इनाम स्वरूप इस झोले को दुनिया की सबसे बहुमूल्य वस्तु भर दीजिए।शिल्पी की बात सुनकर महाराज सोच में पड़ गए कि ऐसी कौन सी वस्तु है, जो सबसे बहुमूल्य है। काफी देर तक सोचने के बाद महाराज ने दरबार में मौजूद राजपुरोहित व सेनापति समेत अन्य दरबारियों से इसका जवाब मांगा। घंटों सोचने के बाद भी शिल्पी को क्या दिया जाए, इसका उत्तर किसी को समझ नहीं आया।

किसी से भी संतोषजनक जवाब न मिलने पर महाराज झल्ला गए और शिल्पी से कहने लगे कि इस दुनिया में हीरे जवाहरात से बढ़कर और क्या कीमती हो सकता है? चलो, मैं तुम्हारा ये झोला उसी से भर देता हूं। महाराज की बात सुनकर शिल्पी ने इनकार में सिर हिलाते हुए कहा, "नहीं महाराज, हीरे-जवाहरात इस दुनिया में सबसे कीमती नहीं हैं। मैं वो कैसे ले सकता हूं।"संयोगवश उस दिन तेनालीराम दरबार में मौजूद नहीं थे। किसी से भी समस्या का समाधान न मिलने पर महाराज ने तुरंत तेनालीराम को बुलाने का आदेश दिया। महाराज का संदेश मिलते ही तेनालीराम तुरंत दरबार की ओर निकल पड़े। रास्ते में ही सेवक ने तेनालीराम को महाराज की चिंता का कारण बता दिया।

दरबार पहुंचते ही तेनालीराम ने सबसे पहले महाराज को प्रणाम किया और फिर सभा में मौजूद अन्य लोगों का अभिवादन किया। महाराज की व्याकुलता को देखते हुए तेनालीराम ने सभा में ऊंची आवाज में कहा, "जिसे भी सभा में दुनिया की सबसे बहुमूल्य वस्तु चाहिए वह सामने आए।" 

तेनालीराम की बात सुनकर शिल्पी आगे आया और अपना खाली झोला तेनालीराम की ओर बढ़ा दिया।शिल्पकार से झोला लेकर तेनालीराम ने उसके मुंह को खोला और हवा में 3-4 बार ऊपर नीचे हिलाकर थैले के मुंह को बांध दिया। इसके बाद तेनालीराम ने झोला शिल्पी की ओर बढ़ाते हुए कहा कि अब आप यह झोला ले सकते हैं, क्योंकि मैंने इसमें दुनिया की सबसे कीमती वस्तु भर दी है। शिल्पकार ने भी झोला थामते हुए तेनालीराम को प्रणाम किया और फिर महाराज से अनुमति लेते हुए औजार उठाकर सभा से चला गया।

यह दृश्य देखकर सभा में मौजूद सभी लोग अचंभित रह गए। महाराज ने उत्सुकता जताते हुए तेनालीराम से पूछा कि शिल्पी को खाली झोला देने के बावजूद भी वह बिना कुछ कहे ही क्यों चला गया? इससे पहले उसने हीरे-जवाहरात जैसे कीमती सामान को बहुमूल्य मानने से इनकार कर दिया था। महाराज की उत्सुकता व दरबारियों के चेहरे पर प्रश्न चिह्न को देखते हुए तेनालीराम ने कहा, “हे महाराज, वह झोला खाली बिल्कुल भी नहीं था, क्योंकि उसमें दुनिया की सबसे बहुमूल्य वस्तु यानी हवा भरी हुई थी। इस दुनिया में हवा से कीमती और क्या हो सकता है, जिसके बिना हम जीवित नहीं रह सकते।”

तेनालीराम का जवाब सुनकर महाराज खुश हुए और उसकी पीठ थपथपाने लगे। तेनालीराम की बुद्धिमता से प्रसन्न होकर महाराज ने उसे इनाम स्वरूप अपने गले से एक कीमती मोतियों की माला निकालकर पहना दी।

कहानी से सीख

इस कहानी से दो सीख मिलती है। पहली यह कि धन से स्वाभिमान नहीं खरीदा जा सकता। दूसरी यह कि दुनिया में सबसे कीमती हवा है, जिसका मूल्य कोई नहीं चुका सकता। हमें यह मुफ्त मिलती है, इसलिए हम इसकी कीमत नहीं समझते।

Wonderful Demand of Craftsman

Once Maharaja Krishnadeva returned to Vijayanagara after winning the neighboring kingdom and announced a celebration. The whole city was decorated as if there was a big festival. To make this victory memorable, the idea came in the mind of Maharaj Krishna Dev that why not build a victory pillar in the city. To make the pillar, Maharaj immediately called the most skilled craftsman of the state and handed over the work to him.

According to the orders of the Maharaj, the craftsman also got involved in his work and for several weeks, day and night, he completed the work of the Victory Stambh. As soon as the Victory Pillar was completed, the courtiers and the townspeople, including the Maharaja, were convinced of the craftsman's art. Pleased with the craftsmanship of the craftsman, Maharaj called him to the court and asked him to ask for a reward. Hearing him, the craftsman said, "Your Majesty, you liked my work, that's the biggest reward for me. You just keep your grace on me." Maharaj was happy to hear the answer of the craftsman, but he still thought that he would definitely give some reward to the craftsman. Maharaj told the shilpi that he would have to ask for some reward.

After knowing Maharaj's wish, the other courtiers present in the court started telling the craftsman that Maharaj is trying to give something to you with an open mind. You ask soon. Apart from being expert in his art, the craftsman was also self-respecting and intelligent. Shilpi felt that if he did not ask for something, Maharaj might get angry. If he takes anything, it will be against his self-respect and principles.

In such a situation, after thinking for some time, the craftsman emptied his bag of tools brought with him and while moving the empty bag towards the Maharaj, he said that as a reward, fill this bag with the most valuable thing in the world. After listening to the craftsman, Maharaj fell into thought. What is the thing that is most valuable? After thinking for a long time, the Maharaja sought an answer from the other courtiers including the Rajpurohit and the commander present in the court. Even after thinking for hours, no one could understand the answer of what to give to Shilpi.

On not getting a satisfactory answer from anyone, the Maharaj got angry and started telling the craftsman that what can be more precious in this world than diamonds and jewels? Come on, I fill this bag of yours with that. Hearing Maharaj's words, Shilpi shook his head in denial and said, "No Maharaj, diamonds and jewels are not the most precious in this world. How can I take them." Incidentally, Tenaliram was not present in the court that day. On not getting a solution to the problem from anyone, Maharaj ordered to call Tenaliram immediately. On receiving the message of Maharaj, Tenaliram immediately left for the court. On the way, the servant told Tenaliram the reason for the Maharaj's concern.

As soon as he reached the court, Tenaliram first bowed to the Maharaj and then greeted the others present in the meeting. Seeing the distraught of the Maharaja, Tenaliram said in a loud voice in the assembly, "Whoever wants the most valuable thing in the world should come forward."

Hearing Tenaliram's words, Shilpi came forward and extended his empty bag towards Tenaliram. Taking the bag from the craftsman, Tenaliram opened his mouth and tied the mouth of the bag by shaking it 3-4 times in the air. After this, Tenaliram extended the bag towards the craftsman and said that now you can take this bag, because I have filled the world's most valuable item in it. The craftsman also bowed to Tenaliram while holding the bag and then after taking the permission of the Maharaj, took the tools and left the meeting.

Seeing this scene, everyone present in the meeting was stunned. The Maharaja asked Tenaliram with curiosity that why did he leave without saying anything even after giving an empty bag to the Shilpi? Earlier, he had refused to consider valuables like diamonds and jewels as valuable. Seeing the eagerness of the Maharaja and the question mark on the faces of the courtiers, Tenaliram said, “O Maharaj, that bag was not empty at all, because it was filled with the most valuable thing in the world, the air. What can be more precious in this world than air, without which we cannot survive.

Maharaj was pleased to hear Tenaliram's answer and started patting his back. Pleased with the wisdom of Tenaliram, Maharaj took out a garland of precious pearls from his neck and wore it as a reward.

Learn from the Story

There are two lessons to be learned from this story. The first is that self-respect cannot be bought with money. The second is that the most precious air in the world is the price of which no one can pay. We get it for free, so we don't understand its value.
