एक समय की बात है। विजयनगर साम्राज्य में शिवालयों के अभाव से महाराज कृष्णदेव राय ने एक शिवालय बनाने की सोची। महाराज ने सभी मंत्रियों और दरबारियों को सभा में बुलाया और शिवालय के विषय में चर्चा की। 

महाराज ने सभी मंत्रियों और दरबारियों को नगर में शिवालय के लिए अच्छी सी जगह ढूंढने को कहा। सभी दरबारियों और मंत्रियों ने नगर की सबसे अच्छी जगह ढूंढ कर महाराज को बता दिया। महाराज को वह जगह पसंद आई। महाराज ने शिवालय का कार्य शुरू करने का आदेश दे दिया।

मंदिर बनाने का पूरा जिम्मा राजा ने अपने एक मंत्री को सौंपा। वह मंत्री वहां पर कुछ लोगों को लेकर साफ सफाई कार्य शुरू कर दिया और तभी खुदाई के दौरान वहां पर शिव जी की एक सोने की मूर्ति मिली। मंत्री के मन में लालच आया। मंत्री ने वह सोने की मूर्ति अपने घर रखवा दी। 

साफ-सफाई करने वाले मजदूरों में से दो मजदूर तेनाली रामा के खास थे। उन दोनों मजदूरों ने मंत्री की कपटी भावना और लालच का सारा किस्सा तेनालीरामा को बता दिया। तेनालीरामा को यह सब पता चलने के बाद भी उन्होंने कुछ नहीं किया। क्योंकि वह सही समय का इंतजार कर रहे थे। कुछ दिन बाद मंदिर के लिए सुनिश्चित की गई जगह के भूमि पूजन का मुहूर्त तय किया गया, उस दिन महाराज ने गांव के वरिष्ठ से वरिष्ठ ब्राह्मणों को बुलाया।

भूमि पूजन की विधि हो जाने के बाद महाराज ने फिर से मंत्रियों और दरबारियों की सभा बुलाई और मंदिर के लिए मूर्ति बनवाने के विषय में चर्चा करने लगे। सभी मंत्री और दरबारी मूर्ति के विषय में आपस में बातचीत कर रहे थे, महाराज ने सबसे राय मांगी। लेकिन कोई भी मूर्ति बनवाने का सही फैसला नहीं ले सका।

महाराज ने इस विषय को लेकर दो दिन तक लगातार सभा बुलाई। महाराज फिर भी सही निर्णय का इंतजार ही कर रहे थे। तभी महल में एक जटाधारी सन्यासी आता है। 

सभी ने उस सन्यासी को प्रणाम किया और उन्हें आदर पूर्वक आसन पर बैठने के लिए जगह दी गई। आसन पर बैठकर उस सन्यासी ने महाराज से कहा कि, महाराज! मुझे स्वयं महादेव ने यहां आपके पास भेजा है। मैं जानता हूं कि आप लोग यहां पर शिवालय बनाना चाहते हैं और यहां पर शिवालय की मूर्ति के विषय में चर्चा चल रही है। शिव जी ने मुझे जो उपाय बताया है, वही मैं आपको बताने के लिए आया हूं। 

सभी लोग हैरान हो गए। महाराज में जटाधारी सन्यासी से पूछा। क्या सच में आपको स्वयं महाकाल ने भेजा है? सन्यासी कहता है, जी महाराज! मुझे स्वयं महादेव ने भेजा है। सन्यासी कहता है महादेव ने स्वयं अपने मंदिर के लिए सोने की मूर्ति भेजी है, (सन्यासी मंत्री के सामने उंगली करते हुए) जोकि इन महाशय के घर में रखी हुई है। महादेव ने स्वयं इनके घर में अपनी मूर्ति रखी है, इतना कहकर सन्यासी वहां से चले गए। 

मंत्री डर गया। इस सन्यासी को उस मूर्ति के बारे में कैसे पता चला? क्या सच में भगवान शिव ने अपने मंदिर के लिए मूर्ति रखी थी। मंत्री वहीं पर कांपने लगा, उसने महाराज को अपनी सारी कहानी कह सुनाई और अपनी गलती को स्वीकार कर माफी की याचना करने लगा। मंत्री बोला मुझे वह मूर्ति मिली थी, जो कि शिवालय के स्थान की खुदाई की जगह पर पड़ी हुई थी। मेरे मन में लालच आया और मैं उस मूर्ति को लेकर घर चला गया। 

महाराज तभी महल में चारों तरफ अपनी निगाह दौड़ाते हैं और तेनालीराम को अनुपस्थित पाते हैं। तेनालीरामा को बहुत ढूंढा गया, पर वह वहां नहीं मिले। थोड़ी देर बाद तेनाली रामा दरबार में पहुंचे। तेनाली रामा को देखकर दरबार में सभी लोग हंसने लगे। तेनाली रामा भी सोच में पड़ गए। यह सब लोग हंस क्यों रहे हैं? तेनाली रामा ने महाराज से सभी लोगों के हंसने का कारण पूछा।

तभी एक दरबारी बोला तो आप है वह जटाधारी सन्यासी। तेनाली रामा फिर से सोच में पड़ गये कि इन सब लोगों को कैसे पता चला? दरबारी बोला आपने जटाधारी सन्यासी की वेशभूषा का यह माला उतारना भूल गए हैं, जो कि अभी भी आपके गले में डली हुई है। सभी दरबारियों के साथ तेनाली रामा भी जोर जोर से हंसने लगे। सबको हंसता देख महाराज भी मुस्कुराने लगे और तेनाली रामा की तारीफ करते हुए मंदिर का जिम्मा भी उन्हें सौंप दिया।

Jatadhari Sannyasi

Once upon a time. Due to the lack of pagodas in the Vijayanagara Empire, Maharaja Krishnadeva Raya thought of building a pagoda. Maharaj called all the ministers and courtiers to the meeting and discussed about the pagoda.

Maharaj asked all the ministers and courtiers to find a good place for pagoda in the city. All the courtiers and ministers found the best place in the city and told it to the Maharaj. Maharaj liked that place. Maharaj ordered to start the work of the pagoda.

The king entrusted the entire responsibility of building the temple to one of his ministers. That minister started cleaning work with some people there and only then during excavation a gold idol of Shiva was found there. Greed came in the mind of the minister. The minister got that gold idol kept in his house.

Two of the cleaning workers were special to Tenali Rama. Both those laborers told the whole story of the minister's insidious spirit and greed to Tenalirama. Even after Tenalirama came to know about this, he did nothing. Because he was waiting for the right time. A few days later, the Muhurta for the Bhoomi Pujan of the site earmarked for the temple was fixed, on that day the Maharaja called the senior Brahmins of the village.

After the method of land worship was done, Maharaj again called a meeting of ministers and courtiers and started discussing about getting an idol for the temple. All the ministers and the courtiers were talking among themselves about the idol, the Maharaja asked for their opinion. But no one could take the right decision to build the idol.

Maharaj convened a meeting for two consecutive days on this subject. Maharaj was still waiting for the right decision. Just then a jat-dhari sannyasi comes to the palace.

Everyone bowed to that sannyasi and he was given a place to sit on the seat with respect. Sitting on the seat, the sannyasi said to Maharaj that, Maharaj! Mahadev himself has sent me here to you. I know that you guys want to build a pagoda here and there is a discussion going on about the idol of pagoda here. I have come to tell you the remedy that Shiv ji has told me.

Everyone was surprised. Maharaj asked the jat-dhari sannyasi. Have you really been sent by Mahakal himself? The sannyasi says, Oh my lord! Mahadev himself has sent me. The sannyasi says that Mahadev himself has sent a gold idol for his temple, (pointing finger in front of the sannyasi minister) which is kept in the house of these Mahasayas. Mahadev himself has kept his idol in his house, saying this, the sannyasis left from there.

The minister got scared. How did this sannyasi come to know about that idol? Did Lord Shiva really keep the idol for his temple? The minister started trembling there, narrated his entire story to Maharaj and accepted his mistake and started pleading for forgiveness. The minister said that I had found the idol, which was lying at the excavation site of the pagoda. Greed came in my mind and I went home with that idol.

The Maharaja then looks around the palace and finds Tenaliram absent. Tenalirama was searched a lot, but he was not found there. After a while Tenali Rama reached the court. Seeing Tenali Rama, everyone in the court started laughing. Tenali Rama also fell into thought. Why is all this people laughing? Tenali Rama asked Maharaj the reason for all the people laughing.

Then a courtier said, then you are that jat-dhari sannyasi. Tenali Rama again wondered how did all these people come to know? The courtier said, you have forgotten to take off this garland of the jat-dhari sannyasi, which is still hanging around your neck. Tenali Rama, along with all the courtiers, started laughing out loud. Seeing everyone laughing, Maharaj also started smiling and praising Tenali Rama, handed over the responsibility of the temple to him.
