सुचिंद्रम का स्थानुमलयन मंदिर ~ Suchindram Sthanumalayan Temple

दक्षिण भारत के तमिलनाडु में कन्याकुमारी से 16 किलो मीटर दूर सुचिंद्रम (Suchindram) नामक एक ऐसा पवित्र स्थान है, जहां ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, महेश (त्रिदेव) की लिंग रूप में पूजा की जाती है। यह केरल हिंदू संस्कृति द्वारा पूजित 108 शिव मंदिरों में से एक है।

पौराणिक कथाएं 

 पौराणिक काल में इस स्थान पर ज्ञान अरण्य नामक सघन वन था। इस ज्ञान अरण्य में महर्षि अत्रि अपनी पत्नी अनसूया के साथ रहते थे। अनसूया महान पतिव्रता थीं, और पति की पूजा करती थीं। उन्हें एक ऐसी शक्ति प्राप्त थी कि वह किसी भी व्यक्ति का रूप परिवर्तित कर सकती थीं। ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश की पत्नियों को जब उनकी इस शक्ति के विषय में ज्ञात हुआ, तो उन्होंने अपने पति से देवी अनसूया के पतिव्रत धर्म की परीक्षा लेने को कहा। उस समय ऋषि अत्रि हिमालय पर तप करने गए हुए थे। जब ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश साधु वेश में ऋषि के आश्रम में पहुंचे तब अनसूया स्नान कर रही थीं। तीनों ने उनसे उसी रूप में आकर भिक्षा देने को कहा, जहां ब्राह्मणों को भिक्षा दिए बिना लौटाना अधर्म था वही ऐसी अवस्था में पर पुरुष के सामने आने से पतिव्रत धर्म भंग होता। देवी को तो दोनों धर्मों का निर्वाह करना था। तब उन्होंने अपनी शक्ति के बल से तीनों ब्राह्मणों को शिशु रूप में परिवर्तित कर दिया और उसी अवस्था में आकर भिक्षा प्रदान की। माता के पतिव्रत धर्म और उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता से प्रसन्न होकर त्रिदेव ने उनसे वरदान मांगने को कहा, जिस पर माता अनुसूया ने उनसे तीनों के प्रतीकात्मक स्वरूप के रूप में यहां रहने को कहा। तब से इस स्थल पर त्रिदेव की पूजा की जाती है।

एक अन्य कथा के अनुसार गौतम ऋषि की पत्नी माता अहिल्या के साथ छल से दुराचार किया था, जिसका गौतम ऋषि को पता चल गया था। तब उन्होंने इंद्र को नपुंसक बनने का श्राप दे दिया था। उसी श्राप से मुक्ति पाने के लिए इंद्र ने इसी स्थल पर दिन-रात तपस्या की, व गौतम ऋषि के श्राप से मुक्ति पाई थी। तब से इस मंदिर का नाम सुचिंद्रम भी पड़ गया, अर्थात इंद्र की शुद्धि होना।

माता सती का अंग गिरना और शक्तिपीठ बनना

जब माता सती अपने पति व भगवान शिव का अपमान होने पर अपने पिता के द्वारा आयोजित किए गए अग्निकुंड में आत्मदाह कर लिया था, तब भगवान शिव उनके मृत शरीर को कंधे पर रखकर दसों दिशाओं में व्याकुल होकर घूम रहे थे। तब भगवान विष्णु ने अपने सुदर्शन चक्र से माता सती के शरीर के 51 टुकड़े कर दिए जो पृथ्वी पर अलग-अलग स्थानों पर गिरे उसी में से माता सती के ऊपरी दांत यहां गिरे थे, तब से यह 51 शक्तिपीठों में से एक है।

शिव जी भगवान का महासदाशिवम रूप

यहां भगवान शिव की अति प्राचीन मूर्ति स्थित है, जिनके 25 मुख 75 आंखें व 50 हाथ हैं। भगवान शिव के ऐसे रूप को महासदाशिवम नाम दिया गया है। यह मूर्ति अद्भुत स्थापत्य कला का एक उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।

आस्था का प्रमुख केंद्र

सुचिंद्रम का स्थानुमलयन मंदिर आज त्रिमूर्ति के प्रति आस्था का एक महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र है मंदिर में 2000 वर्ष पुराना एक वृक्ष जिसे तमिल भाषा में कोनायडी वृक्ष कहा जाता है। चमकदार पत्तियों वाले इस वृक्ष का तना खोखला है। इस खोखले भाग में ही त्रिमूर्ति स्थापित है। इस स्थान पर पहली बार मंदिर का निर्माण नवीं शताब्दी में हुआ था। उस काल के शिलालेख आज भी यहां मौजूद हैं।

मंदिर की अनूठी स्थापत्य कला

17 वीं शताब्दी में मंदिर को एक नया रूप प्रदान किया गया। मंदिर में करीब 30 पूजा स्थल है इनमें से एक स्थान पर भगवान विष्णु की अष्ट धातु प्रतिमा स्थापित है। मंदिर प्रवेश के दाएं ओर सीताराम की प्रतिमा स्थापित है। पास ही पवन पुत्र हनुमान की एक 18 फुट ऊंची प्रतिमा है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि इसी विशाल रूप में हनुमान अशोक वाटिका में सीता जी के सामने प्रकट हुए और उन्हें श्री राम की मुद्रिका दिखाई थी। पास ही गणेश मंदिर है, जिसके सामने नवग्रह मंडप है इस मंडप में नौ ग्रहों की प्रतिमा उत्कीर्ण की हुई है।

 अलंगर मंडप में चार संगीतमय स्तंभ है। ये अनोखे स्तंभ एक ही चट्टान से बने हैं, लेकिन इनमें मृदंग, सितार, जलतरंग तथा तंबूरे की अलग-अलग ध्वनि गुंजित होती है। पहले पूजा- अर्चना के समय इन्हीं स्तंभों से संगीत उत्पन्न किया जाता था। मंदिर में नटराज मंडप भी है और  800 वर्ष पुरानी नंदी की विशाल प्रतिमा भी दर्शनीय है। द्वार पर दो द्वारपाल प्रतिमाएं हैं। यह सात मंजिला मंदिर है जिसका गोपुरम 134 फुट ऊंचा है। यह सप्तसोपान गोपुरम मंदिर को अद्भुत भव्यता प्रदान करता है। इस पर बहुत से आकर्षक मूर्तियां उकेरी हुई हैं। मंदिर के निकट ही एक सुंदर सरोवर है इसके मध्य में एक छोटा सा मंडप बना है।

Suchindram Sthanumalayan Temple

16 km from Kanyakumari in South India, Tamil Nadu, there is such a holy place called Suchindram where Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh (Tridev) are worshiped in linga form. It is one of the 108 Shiva temples worshiped by Kerala Hindu culture.

Mythology

 In the mythological period, there was a dense forest called Gyan Aranya at this place. Maharishi Atri lived with his wife Anasuya in this Gyan Aranya. Anasuya was a great husband, and worshiped her husband. She had such power that she could change the appearance of any person. When the wives of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh came to know about her power, she asked her husband to test the husbandry religion of Goddess Anasuya. At that time, the sage Atri had gone to meditate on the Himalayas. Anshuya was taking a bath when Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh arrived at the ashram of the sage in disguise. The three asked him to come in the same form and give alms, where it was unrighteous to return without giving alms to the Brahmins, but in such a situation, the presence of a man would dissolve the charitable religion. The goddess had to carry out both religions. Then, with the help of his power, he converted all the three Brahmins into infants and came in the same state and gave alms. Pleased with Mata's pativrata religion and his intelligence, Tridev asked him to ask for a boon, on which Mata Anusuya asked him to live here as a symbolic form of the three. Since then Tridev has been worshiped at this site.

According to another legend, Gautam had misbehaved with Mata Ahilya, wife of Rishi, which Gautam Rishi came to know. Then he cursed Indra to become impotent. To get rid of the same curse, Indra did austerities day and night at this place, and got rid of the curse of Gautama Rishi. Since then the name of this temple has also been given to Suchindram, meaning the purification of Indra.

Fall of Mother Sati and become Shaktipeeth

When Mother Sati committed self-immolation in the fire pit organized by her father when she insulted her husband and Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva was wandering in ten directions with his dead body on his shoulder. Then Lord Vishnu cut 51 pieces of Mata Sati's body from his Sudarshan Chakra which fell at different places on the earth, out of which the upper teeth of Mata Sati fell here, since then it is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths.

Lord Shiva as Mahasadashivam

There is a very ancient idol of Lord Shiva, which has 25 faces, 75 eyes and 50 hands. Such a form of Lord Shiva is named Mahasadashivam. This statue is a classic example of amazing architecture.

Major center of faith

The Sthanumalayan temple of Suchindram is an important center of faith for the Trimurti today, a 2000 year old tree in the temple called Konayadi tree in Tamil language. The trunk of this tree with shiny leaves is hollow. Trinity is installed in this hollow part only. The temple was first constructed in this place in the ninth century. Inscriptions of that period are still present here.

The unique Architecture of the temple

The temple was given a new look in the 17th century. There are about 30 places of worship in the temple, in one of these places the Ashta metal statue of Lord Vishnu is installed. The statue of Sitaram is installed on the right side of the temple entrance. Nearby is an 18-foot tall statue of Pawan Putra Hanuman. It is believed that in this huge form Hanuman appeared in front of Sita ji in Ashoka Vatika and she was shown the ring of Shri Rama. Near the Ganesh temple, in front of which is the Navagraha mandapa, the statue of nine planets is engraved in this pavilion.

 The Alangar mandapa has four musical pillars. These unique pillars are made of the same rock, but have different sounds of mridang, sitar, watercolor and tents. Earlier, during the puja-archana, music was produced from these pillars. The temple also has a Nataraja Mandap and a huge statue of 800-year-old Nandi is also visible. There are two gatekeepers at the gate. It is a seven-storied temple whose gopuram is 134 feet high. This Saptasopan Gopuram temple gives amazing grandeur. Many attractive sculptures are carved on it. There is a beautiful lake near the temple, a small pavilion is built in the middle of it.
