यह बात तब की है जब शहंशाह अकबर और बीरबल की पहली मुलाकात हुई थी।उस समय सभी बीरबल को महेश दास के नाम से जानते थे। एक दिन शहंशाह अकबर बाजार में महेश दास की होशियारी से खुश होकर उसे अपने दरबार में इनाम देने के लिए बुलाते हैं और निशानी के तौर पर अपनी अंगूठी देते हैं।

कुछ समय के बाद महेश दास सुल्तान अकबर से मिलने का विचार बना कर उनके महल की ओर रवाना हो जाते हैं। वहां पहुंचकर महेश दास देखते हैं कि महल के बाहर बहुत लंबी लाइन लगी हुई है और दरबान हर व्यक्ति से कुछ ना कुछ लेकर ही उन्हें अंदर जाने दे रहा था। जब महेश दास की बारी आई तो उसने कहा कि महाराज ने मुझे इनाम देने के लिए बुलाया है और उसने सुल्तान की अंगूठी दिखाई। दरबान के मन में लालच आ गया और उसने कहा कि मैं तुम्हें एक शर्त पर अंदर जाने दूंगा अगर तुम मुझे इनाम में से आधा हिस्सा दो तो।

दरबान की बात सुनकर महेश दास ने कुछ सोचा और उसकी बात मान कर महल में चले गए। जैसे ही महेश दास की बारी आई तो वह शहंशाह के सामने आए, तो शहंशाह अकबर ने उन्हें देखते ही पहचान लिया और दरबारियों के सामने उनकी बहुत तारीफ की। बादशाह अकबर ने कहा कि बोलो महेश दास इनाम में क्या चाहिए।

तब महेश दास ने कहा कि महाराज मैं जो कुछ भी मांग लूंगा क्या आप मुझे इनाम में देंगे? बादशाह अकबर ने कहा कि बिल्कुल, मांगो क्या मांगते हो। तब महेश दास ने कहा कि महाराज मुझे पीठ पर सौ कोड़े मारने का इनाम दिया जाए।महेश दास की बात सुनकर सभी को हैरानी हुई और बादशाह अकबर ने पूछा कि तुम ऐसा क्यों चाहते हो।

तब महेश दास ने दरबान के साथ हुई पूरी घटना बताई और अंत में कहा कि मैंने वादा किया है कि इनाम का आधा हिस्सा मैं दरबान को दूंगा। तब अकबर ने गुस्से में आकर दरबान को सौ कोड़े लगवाए और महेश दास की होशियारी देखकर अपने दरबार के मुख्य सलाहकारों के रूप में रख लिया। इसके बाद अकबर ने उसका नाम बदलकर महेश दास से बीरबल रख दिया। तब से लेकर आज तक अकबर और बीरबल के कई किस्से मशहूर हुए।

कहानी की शिक्षा

हमें अपना काम ईमानदारी से और बिना किसी लालच के करना चाहिए। अगर आप कुछ पाने की उम्मीद में कोई काम करते हैं तो, हमेशा बुरे परिणाम का सामना करना पड़ता है।

Half reward

 It is said that when Emperor Akbar and Birbal first met, everyone knew Birbal by the name of Mahesh Das.  One day, Emperor Akbar, happy with Mahesh Das's cleverness in the market, invites him to his court to reward him and offers his ring as a token.

 After some time Mahesh Das decides to meet Sultan Akbar and leaves for his palace.  After reaching there, Mahesh Das sees that there is a very long line outside the palace and the concierge was letting everyone in with something.  When Mahesh Das's turn came, he said that Maharaj has called me to reward him and he showed the ring of Sultan.  The concierge felt greed and said that I will let you in on one condition if you give me half of the reward.

 On hearing the concierge, Mahesh Das thought something and obeyed him and went to the palace.  When Mahesh Das's turn came, he came in front of the Emperor, then Emperor Akbar recognized him on seeing him and praised him very much in front of the court.  Emperor Akbar said, say what Mahesh Das wanted in the reward.

 Then Mahesh Das said that Maharaj, whatever I ask for, will you give me in reward?  Emperor Akbar said that exactly, what do you ask for.  Then Mahesh Das said that Maharaj should be rewarded me with a hundred whips on the back. Everyone was surprised to hear Mahesh Das and Emperor Akbar asked why you want this.

 Then Mahesh Das told the whole incident with the concierge and finally said that I have promised that I will give half of the reward to the concierge.  Then Akbar angrily got the court a hundred flogged and seeing Mahesh Das's intelligence, he appointed him as the chief advisers of his court.  After this Akbar changed his name from Mahesh Das to Birbal.  Since then, many stories of Akbar and Birbal have become famous.

 Moral of the story:- 

 We should do our work honestly and without any greed.  If you do something in the hope of getting something, you always face bad results.
